Chapter 28

Exhaling my anger and frustration, I looked in the direction of the pack house. We were far enough that normal wolves wouldn’t be able to see it, but I wasn’t normal. I could see through the trees and the branches as if the pack house was a few feet away rather than miles. I focused my hearing to the house. My hearing and awareness of everything around me was so amplified that when I tuned into something, it was almost as if I were a ghost, as if I were actually there.

Hearing past the TV’s, music, fighting and happy couples, the sleeping and chatting wolves, I moved my hearing to the section where I knew my room was located and listened in on what Vivian was doing. She was already in bed. Her heartbeat was a soft lullaby. She would change her position every once in a while, dragging the chains along the silk covers, then she would fall asleep only to toss and turn again. It gave me a twisted pleasure to know she couldn’t sleep comfortably without me.
