Carson POV I was waiting for updates from the teams that were after Marly. I had not heard anything yet. The doctor had stitched me up, and, as I suspected, I had a couple broken ribs. Nothing had been punctured, which was good news for me. I could live with broken ribs. I could not live without Marly. Jeff had been raced into the operating room. On top of a broken arm, and a head wound he also had internal bleeding. I was sitting with Sarah while we waited for word on how he was doing. That had been a couple of hours ago, but as I kept reminding Sarah, no news was good news in this situation. Just as I was about to stand, the doctor rushed through the operating room doors, “Alpha, Beta Female, I wanted to update you on the Beta’s condition,” the doctor stated. She moved closer to us, before starting to speak. “The Beta has multiple broken ribs. One of the ribs punctured his left lung. We have been working to repair the lung, and should b
Carson POV What the hell just happened? Marly? Marly, are you okay? I realized I was only thinking these words but not saying them out loud. I reached my arm across to touch Marly, but I was met with empty space. Did she get out of the car? Was she getting help? I tried to open my eyes but could not. I heard groaning from the back of the vehicle. Sarah and Jeff, I remembered, had been travelling with us. I slowly moved my hand to the seatbelt clasp, bracing myself for when I released it. “Fuck!” I spit out as I hit the roof of the SUV hard. I breathed in through the pain trying to assess my injuries. I was certain I had a couple of broken ribs, as it was difficult to breathe. And blood was dripping down from a cut on my head. But overall, I was able to briefly open my eyes, before closing them quickly owing to the brightness of the day. I could now hear yelling around us, realizing for a moment that I had been unable to hear anything.
Marly POV Looking to Carson, “What do you make of his final threat?” I asked. “I do not know but I am not waiting to find out. We will have our chosen mate ceremony as soon as it can be arranged,” Carson stated, before taking my hand and walking back to his office. We had left the three sisters alone and needed to check on them. As we entered the room, we found the sisters sitting and holding Cecilia’s body in their arms. Tears were rolling down their cheeks, “We never knew,” they kept murmuring, as if seeking peace and forgiveness from Cecilia. “How could he have manipulated such a strong witch?” the third sister asked. I stepped forward moving towards the women, “When you love someone as much as Cecilia loved the Elder, it is clear she was blinded by that love, and lost to everyone around her,” I shared as the sisters looked at me. “Can you bring her back?” the first sister asked, pleading with me to do something. I looked at her sadly, “W
Carson POV I watched as Cecilia pointed to Marly, before she fell to her knees. “What is happening?” I asked, as I watched behind the invisible shield trying to understand what was taking place. I could not hear what was being said, and I was savagely trying to break the shield with no success. Not so much as a crack. I was outraged at being held back from being inside to help Marly. “You being in there would be worse for Marly,” Jeff stated, as if reading my mind. “I could help her,” I spit out, as he shook his head. “No, Carson; she would be so worried about you, she would not be able to focus on surviving,” he commented. I stood there, thinking about what he had said. He was right. Marly would always try to protect me first, as I would do for her. “I am useless outside of this barrier,” I muttered, feeling helpless as I watch my mate prepare to fight this unknown woman. I could not understand why Cecilia was bent over, as if she was in
Marly POV “Your sister?” I questioned, surprised that they would be after her. “Why are you willing to help us?” I added. “Because she needs to be stopped. We thought she had been long gone, but clearly, she was hiding, becoming stronger, and more bitter,” the leader stated. “We love her, but we know she needs to be stopped,” the second added. “Did you ever meet Elder John?” I asked, curious about the relationship between Cecilia and John. “Only once,” the third sister replied sadly. “He was a cold man, where Cecilia had always been affectionate up to that point,” the sister added. “We told her we thought he was not good for her; that was mistake number one,” the first sister said. “Why?” Sarah asked, both of us entrenched in the story. “Because it was the first time we had a barrier between us. We knew she deserved better. He was not good for her. She grew colder around us, until one day she turned on all of those who loved her,” t
Marly POV “What does that mean, Marly?” Carson asked me. I felt both Carson and Marise move closer to me. “She is in this general area, from what my program is telling me,” I replied, turning the laptop to Carson. “That seems too easy. She wants to be found,” Marise stated, concern filling her voice. “What does that mean, Marise?” Carson asked getting frustrated at the puzzle around him. “It means she has already come to you. You do not need to track her down. She wanted you to find her. She has come to fight,” Marise stated, a chill running down my back. “Why?” I asked. “You destroyed her mate. She wants payback. Only her payback will result in death,” Marise replied. Carson studied the map, “She is with his body,” he replied, turning to head out the door. “Do not go unprepared, Carson. You will get many killed, including yourself,” Marise stated. “You cannot know that,” Carson replied angrily. “I do know that. I have a
