The silence did not last.

It never does.

It cracked first. A low groan from the far wall. Stone shifting, grinding like teeth. Then another sound layered over it. Whispers. Not voices exactly. More like echoes that did not belong to anyone still alive.

My body stiffened in Kaden’s arms.

“Put me down,” I said softly.

He hesitated. “You can barely stand.”

“I need to feel the floor,” I replied. “Please.”

He set me down slowly. My legs trembled but held. The stone beneath my bare feet felt warm. Too warm. Like it remembered me.

Kael noticed immediately. His gaze snapped to the ground, then back to me. “The magic did not disperse.”

Darius turned in a slow circle, blade still loose in his grip. “The Dark King never leaves without planting something.”

Right on cue, the air shifted.

A pressure settled over the throne room. Not heavy. Not violent. Intentional. Like a hand resting on the back of your neck to remind you it could tighten at any moment.
