THE NEXT DAY

The morning sun slipped through a gap in the heavy curtains, falling directly across Charlotte's face.

She groaned and turned away, trying to escape the brightness, but the movement sent a dull ache through her body.

Her eyes flew open.

For a few seconds, she lay still, staring at the unfamiliar ceiling. The sheets beneath her were soft, the room was spacious, and the faint smell of expensive perfume mixed with the lingering scent of whiskey.

This wasn't her bedroom.

Then she looked down.

The white silk sheet had slipped to her waist, leaving her shoulders bare. Faint bruises marked her collarbones, and there were darker ones along her shoulders.

Charlotte's breath caught.

Memories from the previous night came rushing back.

The gala. Sean's humiliating words. Olivia's smug face in that matching emerald dress. The bathroom stall where Charlotte had hidden, only to discover the truth about her husband and her own twin sister.

She remembered the anger that had taken over her, the red lipstick she had applied, and the stranger she had approached in the corridor.

She had thought he was a waiter.

She had offered him money to take her somewhere private, and even when he made it clear that he wasn't who she thought he was, she had refused to back down.

Then he had opened the door to the VIP lounge.

Charlotte squeezed her eyes shut.

She remembered his warning. She remembered telling him that she didn't want to mean anything to him. She remembered the way he had looked at her before taking her inside.

And after that...

Her cheeks burned as the rest of the night came back to her.

She had slept with a complete stranger.

Not just any stranger, either. The man had been dangerous, and she had known it. He had made no promises, offered no comfort, and never pretended that what happened between them meant anything.

Yet she had gone with him anyway.

For the first time in five years, she had done something without worrying about what Sean would think. She hadn't asked for her husband's permission or considered how her actions might affect his reputation.

She had simply wanted to forget.

And for a few hours, she had.

Now morning had arrived, and reality was waiting for her.

Charlotte pushed the sheets aside and sat up slowly. Her body protested the movement, a soft ache lingering in her thighs and lower back that reminded her of every unforgiving touch, every possessive grip, and every stolen breath.

She turned to the other side of the bed.

It was empty.

The sheets were undisturbed, and there was no sign of the man who had shared the room with her.

He was gone.

A strange feeling settled in her chest. She couldn't decide whether she was relieved or disappointed, and she hated herself for even wondering.

"Of course he's gone," she muttered.

What had she expected? Breakfast in bed? A sweet goodbye? Perhaps a promise that they would meet again?

She let out a bitter laugh.

The man had warned her from the beginning. He had made it clear that she meant nothing to him, and she had agreed to those terms.

There was no reason to feel disappointed.

She had wanted one night without being Sean Sinclair's neglected wife. She had wanted to feel wanted, even if it was only for a few hours.

She had gotten what she asked for.

That was all.

Charlotte swung her legs over the edge of the mattress and looked around the vast suite. On the floor her emerald silk dress lay crumpled, ruined, and torn at the seam.

"Oh God..." she choked out, a sudden tremor taking over her hands.

Her purse was sitting on the polished mahogany nightstand, her phone vibrating silently against the wood as the screen lit up with notification after notification.

She picked it up with a shaking hand.

68 Missed Calls.

54 Unread Messages.

Sean's name dominated the screen:

Sean: Where the hell are you?!

Sean: You made a complete fool out of me at the gala and now you disappear?!

Sean: Get home right now, Charlotte, or so help me God!

Olivia: Char, please call me! Sean is losing his mind!

A bitter, cold numbness settled over Charlotte's chest. She dropped the phone back onto the nightstand, refusing to give them the satisfaction of a reply.

That was when she noticed the white card sitting beside an empty tumbler on the table, held down by a heavy brass room key.

With curious fingers, Charlotte picked it up. Written across the center in sharp, commanding, masculine handwriting were four short words:

We'll keep in touch.

— Van

Charlotte read it twice.

Van...

That was all he had left her. No phone number, no explanation, and no indication of when they might meet again.

She turned the card over, hoping to find something else, but the back was completely blank.

"Unbelievable," she whispered.

The man had disappeared without a word, leaving her with a note that sounded less like a goodbye and more like a decision he had already made for both of them.

Charlotte slipped the card into her handbag.

She didn't know who Julian was, what he wanted from her, or whether she would ever see him again.

For now, she had a husband to face and a family waiting to judge her.

And after last night, nothing about going home was going to be simple.

Charlotte took one last look around the suite before heading into the bathroom.

She needed a shower, clean clothes, and a few minutes to gather herself before facing the people waiting for her at home.

The bathroom was large, with marble walls, gold fixtures, and a wide mirror above the sink. Charlotte stared at her reflection for a moment, taking in her smudged makeup and the marks on her skin.

She looked nothing like the woman who had walked into the gala the previous evening.

After showering, she dried herself and returned to the bedroom. Her dress was still lying on the floor, and she had no other clothes to change into. With a sigh, she put it back on, doing her best to adjust the torn seam. She brushed her hair, wiped away the last traces of her makeup, and collected her belongings.

Before leaving, she checked the room one last time.

Charlotte slipped Julian's note into her handbag and walked out of the suite.

At the reception desk, she learned that the room had already been settled. She didn't ask questions. She wasn't interested in knowing who had paid for it or how much the night had cost.

Outside, she opened her phone and booked an Uber.

The driver arrived a few minutes later. Charlotte climbed into the back seat, gave him the address of the Sinclair mansion, and leaned against the window.

As the hotel disappeared behind them, she finally opened the messages on her phone again to see more had arrived.

Sean had called several more times, and his latest message was even more threatening than the others.

Sean: You have ten minutes to get home. If you make me wait any longer, don't bother coming back.

Charlotte stared at the screen.

Then she locked her phone and slipped it into her handbag.

For five years, she had allowed that man to dictate almost every part of her life. She had tolerated his insults, his coldness, and the way he made her feel like an unwanted burden in her own marriage.

Last night, she had finally stopped caring.

She wasn't sure what that meant for her future, but one thing was certain. She couldn't keep living the way she had been living.

The Uber turned into the long driveway leading to the Sinclair mansion.

Charlotte's stomach tightened as the familiar building came into view. She paid the driver when he stopped at the entrance, thanked him, and stepped out.

The mansion looked exactly as it always had, grand and imposing, with its tall windows and carefully maintained gardens.

Yet Charlotte suddenly felt like a stranger returning to a place where she no longer belonged.

She adjusted her handbag on her shoulder and walked towards the entrance.

Charlotte pushed open the heavy oak double doors. The familiar scent of polished mahogany and the floral diffuser greeted her, but the quiet in the entryway barely lasted a second before Sean's angry voice came from the living room.

Everyone was waiting for her.

Her mother, Margaret, sat stiffly on the velvet sofa, twisting a silk handkerchief between her fingers. Beside her stood Sean's mother, Bianca, dressed in a neat lace suit, her expression already making it clear that she had chosen her side. Sean's younger sister, Vanessa, leaned against the marble fireplace with an amused look on her face, while Olivia sat in an armchair wearing an oversized sweater, her eyes red and watery as though she had spent the entire morning crying.

And Sean was standing in the middle of the

room, pacing and red in the face with anger. His tuxedo jacket was gone, his shirt was open at the collar, and his hair was a mess. The moment he heard Charlotte's heels against the marble floor, he turned sharply, his eyes settling on her torn dress before moving to her face.

"So you finally decided to come home." His voice was full of anger. "Do you have any idea what you've put me through since last night?"

Margaret immediately stood up, relief washing over her face before worry took its place.

"Charlotte, where have you been? I've been calling you all night! You didn't answer a single call, and nobody knew where you were. I was so worried something had happened to you."

Charlotte looked at her mother, and for a moment, she felt guilty. Margaret had no idea what had happened at the gala or what Charlotte had heard in that bathroom. She had only seen her daughter leave in humiliation and then disappear for the rest of the night.

"I'm sorry, Mum. I should have called you."

"Sorry?" Eleanor cut in before Margaret could say anything else. "Is that all you have to say? You embarrassed Sean in front of everyone at that gala, then ran off without a word. Do you understand how that made this family look?"

Vanessa gave Charlotte's dress another look and let out a short laugh. "And you came back dressed like that? What happened to you? You look like you've been sleeping in the gutters with the homeless."

Charlotte stood frozen in the center of the foyer. For five years, every instinct built on years of emotional abuse would have urged her to shrink back, to apologize, to lower her head, and to beg for Sean's forgiveness.

But then the memory of the bathroom stall flashed through her mind.

I don't want to think about her sickening body...

Something deep in Charlotte's chest hardened. She didn't drop her head. She didn't flinch.

"I didn't stay in a gutter," Charlotte said, her voice remarkably steady, carrying a cold edge that made her mother blink in shock.

Sean stared at her as though her answer had only made him angrier. "Then where the hell were you, Charlotte? Do you have any idea how many times I've called you? You ignored every single call and left me to deal with the mess you created at that gala!"

Charlotte looked at him, almost unable to believe what she was hearing. "You told me to leave, Sean. You stood there in front of everyone and made it clear you didn't want me around. So I left. What exactly did you expect me to do?"

"I told you to leave the gala, not disappear for an entire night!" Sean snapped. "You're my wife, for God's sake! You don't get to walk out on me and do whatever you want!"

"Funny how you remember I'm your wife when it suits you."

His eyes narrowed. "What is that supposed to mean?"

"It means you can't humiliate me in public, tell me to get out of your sight, and then expect me to come running back the moment you decide you've had enough."

Sean's face twisted with rage as he stared at Charlotte, unable to believe she had dared to speak to him that way. For five years, she had always backed down whenever he raised his voice, but today she stood before him without apologizing or begging for his forgiveness.

"Have you forgotten who you're talking to?" he demanded, stepping closer.

Charlotte held his gaze. "No, Sean. But I think you've forgotten who I am."

His expression darkened. Before anyone could react, he raised his hand and struck her brutally across the face.

Charlotte crossed the courtyard connecting the North Wing to the main house, her handbag resting against her hip. The morning air was cool, but the noise from the wedding preparations was enough to ruin any chance of enjoying it.Two workers hurried past her carrying a large vase filled with white roses. Another stood near the entrance, arguing with a woman who appeared to be one of the wedding planners."No, no, no! Mrs. Sinclair specifically requested the arrangements near the fountain. Why are you bringing them here?"Charlotte stopped.Mrs. Sinclair. For a moment, she wondered which one they meant. Then she remembered that, in two weeks, Olivia would officially become Sean's wife.Again, Charlotte found herself wondering how she had ended up living in a house where everyone seemed determined to erase her while she was still standing right in front of them. She continued inside. The main house looked even worse than the gardens. FIVE MONTHS LATERCharlotte woke to the sound of a truck reversing outside her window. She groaned, rolled onto her other side, and pulled the duvet over her head, hoping whoever was making all that noise would have the decency to stop. Unfortunately, the rumbling only grew louder, followed by the sound of men shouting to one another and something heavy being dragged across the driveway. She opened her eyes and stared at the ceiling."You're kidding me."It was barely six in the morning. For the past three days, trucks had been arriving at the Sinclair estate with flowers, furniture, decorations, and enough equipment to host a small festival. Workers had taken over the gardens, event planners had filled the main house with their endless discussions, and the staff had been running around as though the future of the country depended on everything being ready on time. All because Sean Sinclair was getting married.Again.Well, technically, it would be his first wedding to the woman he ac

A heavy silence descended over the grand foyer. The words hung in the air like poison, sharp and filthy enough to make Margaret gasp aloud, clutching her throat in absolute horror. Before Sean could utter a single defensive rage-filled response, Olivia's face crumpled. She didn't lash out. She didn't yell. Instead, she let out a broken, ragged sob that sounded as if her heart had literally ruptured inside her chest. Her knees buckled under her, and she collapsed onto the hard marble floor with a sickening thud, her trembling hands covering her face as hysterical tears burst through her fingers."Olivia!" Sean roared, all his anger toward Charlotte vanishing in an instant. He didn't care who was watching. He dropped to his knees beside Olivia, wrapping his arms fiercely around her shoulders and pulling her small, shaking frame tightly against his chest."Liv, stop... don't do this to yourself, please..." Sean's voice softened into a desperate, gentle murmur, a tone so intimate yet had

The sound of the slap echoed through the living room, leaving everyone too shocked to speak.Charlotte's head had turned to the side from the force of the blow, and for a moment, she remained exactly where she was, one hand hanging by her side as she slowly felt the sting spreading across her cheek. Her ears rang, and she could feel the eyes of everyone in the room fixed on her, but what hurt her most was not the slap itself. It was the fact that Sean, the man she had spent her entire marriage trying to please, had finally raised his hand against her in front of their families."Sean!" Margaret cried out, rising from the sofa so quickly that the silk handkerchief slipped from her lap. "What have you done?"Even Bianca looked taken aback, her lips parting slightly as she stared at her son. Vanessa, who had been enjoying every moment of Charlotte's humiliation just a few minutes ago, had stopped smirking. None of them had expected Sean to go that far, no matter how angry he was with his

Giovanni Voss looked at the stunning, flushed woman in front of him, his eyes flared, tracking the heavy, furious heave of her breasts spilling over her dress, then dropping to the thick stack of bills she had slammed against his chest. A dangerous, predatory amusement struck him. Charlotte Sinclair. How very unexpected. He hadn't wanted to attend the gala tonight. He had little patience for the boring elite of this city. But seeing the submissive wife of his most annoying rival standing in front of him demanding to be ruined, made the entire evening worth it. "Is it not enough?" Charlotte asked suddenly, her voice sharp with impatience when he remained silent. She didn't wait for his answer. Her trembling hands scrambled back into her clutch, pulling out another wad of cash and shoving it against his chest. "I have more. Five thousand. Ten thousand. Just name your price!" Van almost laughed. Not at her, but at the sheer audacity of a woman throwing money at him like he was for sal
