(Peyton)

The front hall of the Alpha's house is empty when I get home, which suits me fine.

I don't cry. I don't scream either. Screaming takes air, and the pup is using most of mine.

Instead, I call a number I haven't used in over a year, and the caretaker of my old cottage on Greyfell land picks up on the second ring.

"It's Peyton. I need the cottage opened up. Scrub it top to bottom, open every window, chase out the spiders. I'm moving back in by the end of the week."

"About time," he says.

Until then, any hotel beats one more night under this roof.

Upstairs, I drag my old travel bags out of the closet. They came with me to every treaty table I ever sat at.

Only the things I paid for get packed.

The soft pastel maternity dresses stay on their hangers. I bought those to look like the sweet, quiet wife Cormac's family wanted.

That woman retired an hour ago, in a healing center hallway.

My favorite silk blouse is still in the laundry room.

Two steps through the door, my shoe hits soapy water and the floor comes up fast.

I twist to keep my belly off the tiles, so my knee takes all of it. The crack is loud, and the pain shoots straight up my thigh.

I lie there and check.

The pup kicks me, annoyed and perfectly fine.

Thank the Goddess.

My knee isn't. It swells while I watch.

A healthy she-wolf would heal this in an hour. Mine has been half asleep for months, so I get to do it the slow way.

The puddle sits right across the doorway, and there's no leak anywhere near it. Tess, the head housekeeper, left it there on purpose.

When Cormac's home, she's all "Yes, ma'am," when I give an order.

When he's out, my coffee shows up cold, my requests get lost, and puddles appear wherever I'm about to walk.

Nobody comes running. Every wolf in this house can hear a pin drop two floors away, so they all heard me fall.

I haul myself up by the washing machine, call it a few names, and limp to the kitchen for ice.

I sit there alone with a bag of frozen peas on my knee, and an old hurt wakes up.

Being left behind is nothing new. I've had practice.

When I was little, my mother packed her bags in the middle of the night, took my older brother, and walked out without a note or a goodbye.

My father burned every photo of them. These days I can't even picture their faces.

Then he died too, and I learned the only person I could count on was me.

"That's never happening to you," I tell the pup, one hand on my belly. "It's you and me, kid. Always."

"Always so clumsy."

Meredith Whelan stands in the kitchen doorway in cream cashmere, looking down her nose at my knee. She clicks her tongue.

"She would never make a scene like this."

She.

So my mother-in-law already knows about the honeysuckle girl. Knowing Meredith, she introduced them.

To her, I'm a mistake with a due date.

Her eyes flick up toward my room and her face hardens. She's seen the bags.

"Cormac left documents in his study. They're needed at the pack hall. Take them to him. Now."

I could tell her exactly where to put those documents. But I've got about one fight left in me today, and I'm saving it for her son.

"Happy to," I say, and limp past her.

The folder is on Cormac's desk. There's something else underneath it.

Divorce papers, dated three weeks ago, with my name already typed in.

Three weeks, and he didn't have the guts to hand them over.

He's offering a fat monthly allowance, like a pension for a retired warrior. He can keep it.

There's only one thing I want, so I take his fancy pen and write a new clause at the bottom.

I give up every claim to Blackpine's land, money and titles, now and forever. The pup stays with me.

No mark means no bond to break. Ending us only takes a pen.

Both folders go in my tote.

I'm halfway to the pack hall when Ian's name lights up my phone, and I catch myself smiling for the first time today.

Ian Blackwell is the Alpha of Greyfell, my old boss, and my best friend since we were pups.

"Pey. I need a massive favor."

"Define massive."

"An alliance deal. High stakes, short tempers, and a deadline breathing down my neck. I need my old emissary back. The scary one."

"She's a bit pregnant."

"I noticed. I also know your Alpha likes you at home knitting booties. But you were never built for that, Peyton, and you're the only one who can save this. Name your price."

When I gave up my post to marry Cormac, Ian asked me to think twice. I didn't.

He never once said I told you so. Not even when our packs ended up on opposite sides of the table.

My tote sits on the passenger seat with the end of my marriage inside it.

Deep in my chest, my wolf lifts her head. She always did love a fight at a treaty table.

"I'm getting divorced," I say, and it comes out calm. "I'm done fighting for a marriage that was dead on arrival. Send me the treaty terms, Ian. I'm in."

(Peyton)Emerson's tall shadow falls across our table.Leilani trails behind him with her hand wrapped around his sleeve, like she's five years old. Then she sees who I'm having dinner with, and the smug look curdles. She forces a tight little smile."Brooke," she says, sweet as syrup. "What a surprise."Brooke doesn't even blink. She takes a slow sip of her wine and looks straight through her, the way you'd look through a window.Emerson clears his throat."Celebrating something, Ms. Knox?"It's polite, and it's fishing. I don't give him anything. I just lift my chin and smile a small, quiet smile. He stares at my face a second too long.Something crosses that cold expression of his. He blinks, and the sharp edge drops out of his voice."It's strange," he murmurs. "When you smile like that, you look just like my sister."I frown. His sister is standing right there, holding his sleeve. Why wouldn't he just say I look like Leilani? Before I can work it out, he's himself again."Enjoy y

(Peyton)The morning after the Alphas' Ball, I'm still buzzing.Taking Cormac's bet wasn't a whim. It was a declaration of war, and wars need an army.Since I'm not allowed within sniffing distance of Ian, he sends me the most powerful ally he can offer. The knock on my hotel door comes early, but I’m already up, phone at my ear."Peyton, meet Brooke Hickman," Ian says, sounding very pleased with himself. "She's the sharpest negotiator I've got. Try not to scare each other."I open the door to a she-wolf who looks like she eats rival emissaries for breakfast.Brooke is a few years older than me, with a sharp haircut, dark eyes, and no time for nonsense. She doesn't smile and she doesn't shake my hand. She walks straight past me, drops a heavy case on the table, and starts laying out treaty drafts."Blackwell says you're the best. Show me."We click before the first pot of tea is empty.A good partner at the table is rare, and working with Brooke is easy. Nobody fights over who's in ch

(Cormac)Silence stretches between us.She actually believes she can threaten my pack.Every wolf in this ballroom sees a female who washed out.One nice chat with Watson doesn't change that, and making him see it too won't be difficult.Peyton was good at the table once. If she were still that wolf, one pregnancy wouldn't have turned her into a tired housewife. It's time she remembered how things really work."You want to play games, Peyton?"I step closer, so she has to tip her head back to meet my eyes."Then prove you belong at the table. You want me to take you seriously? You want me to even discuss your terms? Fine. Get Theodore Watson to give Greyfell his word."Her eyes narrow a little. It's the only sign she's listening."Until you do, you're not a threat. You're a pest buzzing around my alliance."I look past her at Ian Blackwell. He's standing far too close to my wife, and his scent is still on her sleeve. My wolf wants to take his arm off at the shoulder. It has nothing to

(Peyton)All the color drains out of Leilani's face. She makes a small, choked sound, spins on her high heels, and runs.Emerson turns a cold stare on Cormac. He doesn't say a word, and he doesn't have to. The look says it all.Fix this, or else.Cormac curses under his breath, shoots me one last glare, and chases after his mistress.Emerson steps around the curtain and straightens his jacket. Ian stays planted at my side like a very large guard dog. Emerson acts like he isn't there."I apologize for the drama," he says. It's polite, with no warmth in it at all. "My sister is very sensitive."I give him my best treaty-table smile."No need to apologize for Leilani. That's a normal reaction from a girl who just found out her perfect Alpha is a lying asshole."His sharp eyes travel over my dress and my straight back."I'll admit, Mrs. Whelan, this whole evening is a surprise. I was told a very different story about the state you were in.""It's Ms. Knox. I never was Luna, and I'm done b

  • The Mate He Never Marked   Chapter 6 The Greyfell Emissary

(Peyton)Walking into the Alphas' Ball feels less like a party and more like stepping into a trap with nice lighting. My hand on Ian's arm keeps me steady. My knee is strapped under the dress, and the healer's salve is doing its best.Every eye in the ballroom follows us in, and every nose catches it. The Alpha of Blackpine's pregnant wife is wearing another Alpha's scent on her sleeve.Whispers race ahead of us through the crowd. For any she-wolf, this is social suicide. For the quiet, obedient wife Cormac ordered for tonight, it's a slap in the face with the whole room watching.Across the ballroom, he freezes. His drink tips in his hand and nearly spills. For one second his wolf looks out of his eyes, and it's furious. Then the polite mask slides back on.He doesn't explode.Alphas who explode in front of Theodore Watson don't win alliances. He sets his glass on a passing tray and comes prowling through the crowd like a predator. He stops close enough to drown me in orange peel and

(Cormac)I hang up and toss the phone onto the table, satisfied."She'll be there," I tell the male sitting across from me.Emerson Roth is my new partner. With Roth money behind Blackpine's warriors, no pack alive can outbid us for Alpha Watson’s alliance. He leans back and folds his hands."Peyton was the best emissary in the territories. Watson respects her. If she speaks for your plan tonight, he might finally say yes. But she's been out of sight for months, and it makes Alphas nervous.""She's been focusing on her health."The lie puts a sour edge on the air. Emerson is polite enough not to sniff."She also just found out about you and my sister. Are you sure she'll speak for you at all?""She'll do what she's told.""Ian Blackwell wants the same alliance. They grew up together, and you're not her favorite wolf right now. What if he's already asked her?"I wave it off."Impossible. She gave up her post at Greyfell without a fight, and she's never once asked for it back. She isn't
