Ronan

Maeve was not supposed to attend the hearing. Elowen had been extremely clear about that. Then Maeve had stared at her for approximately ten seconds. Now Maeve was attending the hearing, under conditions.

No magic. No standing for extended periods. No attempting to freeze the Council. No threatening anyone with royal dominance. No creative interpretation of the previous three rules.

Maeve had taken particular offense to that last one. I had taken no offense at all.

"You're hovering."

RonanMy wolf rose sharp and sudden. Maeve's fingers shook slightly inside mine, a small tremor I felt more than saw."And they denied him.""Yes.""Who?""Regional Stability."Evander stared straight ahead, refusing to meet anyone's eyes. Maeve looked at him. "You knew."He smiled faintly. Not enough of an answer, but enough of a confession.Holt continued. "Evander was not Director then. But he worked inside the department.""He inherited the protocol," I said.Holt nodded. "And expanded it."Ward. Caine. Silver Crown. Cross. Debt. Instability. All extensions of the same philosophy, patient and methodical. Keep independent power divided. Keep everyone manageable.Evander finally spoke, his voice quiet but firm. "You say that like it's evil."Maeve looked at him, something steady and unshaken in her gaze. "You helped the man who murdered my father.""For regional stability.""You helped Gideon destabilize Caine.""He was predictable.""You allowed innocent people to die."His expres

"I am pregnant, Ronan. I have not suffered a traumatic brain injury."Cassian made the mistake of laughing behind us. I looked over my shoulder, and he stopped, mostly.Maeve pointed at me. "See? This.""What?""This thing you're doing.""Keeping you alive?""I

  • The Mate Hunt   Chapter 174: Withdrawn

MaeveAnother knock came at the door, softer this time. Ronan closed his eyes. "I regret allowing people to know where this room is."This time the door opened slowly, and Isolde stood outside. Everything inside me went quiet at once. She had changed clothes, no crown, no formal black and silver robes, just a dark dress and the silver streaks woven through her loose hair. For once she looked less like a Queen Regent and more like a woman who hadn't slept in days. Her gaze immediately went to me. Then Ronan. Then my stomach, only for a second, too quick to be anything but instinct. But I caught it anyway.I stiffened. She noticed."I don't know," she said."What?"Her eyes returned to mine. "Whatever happened while you were examined, nobody told me."Oh. Good. Ronan had kept his word after all, and something in me relaxed slightly at that small proof of it.Isolde looked toward Holt. "May I?"Holt glanced at me. My decision. Good."Come in."Isolde entered slowly, stopping several fe

MaeveI had been pregnant for approximately thirty seven minutes, and Ronan had already become unbearable."No."I stared at him. "I didn't even say anything.""You were about to get out of bed.""I was about to sit up.""You are sitting up."I looked down at myself. Technically, he had a point. Elowen had propped enough pillows behind me that I was almost upright, though Ronan apparently considered anything beyond this specific angle an attempted escape."I need to pee."That finally shut him up. Elowen snorted from the other side of the room, not even looking up from her work.Ronan's eyes narrowed. "Can you walk?"I stared at him. "I froze an entire Council territory. I think I can make it twelve feet to a bathroom.""You also collapsed immediately afterward.""Afterward being the important word.""Maeve.""Ronan."Elowen closed the medical ledger in her lap with a snap. "If either of you makes me regret confirming this pregnancy, I will separate you myself."Ronan looked at her. "

  • The Mate Hunt   Chapter 172: More Than One Heart

RonanMaeve went limp in my arms, all the warmth and fire in her body draining away at once. For one horrible second, the entire world stopped with her.“Maeve.”Nothing.Blood ran from her nose, streaking across her mouth and down her chin as her head fell heavily against my chest.“Maeve.”Still nothing.Fear hit harder than Sovereign Hunger ever had, cold and sharp, sinking its claws deep into my ribs. I lifted her before anyone could touch her, her body far too light against mine.“HEALER!”The shout tore through the courtyard, raw and ragged, echoing off the stone walls. Council guards scattered out of my path.Good. Anyone stupid enough to stand between me and the infirmary was going through a wall.Holt hurried beside me, her boots ringing against the paving stones. “The medical wing is east.”“Move.”She did.Someone was shouting about Evander behind us. I didn't care. He was restrained, and he wasn't getting away. Maeve wasn't opening her fucking eyes, and that was all that m

  • The Mate Hunt   Chapter 171: Nowhere to Run

Maeve“He's trying to run.”Ronan's eyebrows lifted. I smiled, and then I reached for him. Not physically. For the bond. For Caine. For the enormous, impossible thing inside me that I had only just started learning how to use. Ronan's expression changed immediately.“Maeve?”“Evander activated his little containment protocol because he thinks I'm dangerous.” Silver slid beneath my skin, and my pulse thundered. “So maybe we should stop disappointing him. He's still on Council territory.”Holt frowned. “What does that have to do with anything?”I didn't know how I knew. I just did. When I had forced Isolde's army down at Caine, I hadn't reached for individual wolves.I had reached for the land, for every wolf standing inside the boundaries I recognized as mine to command. This wasn't my territory, but the Council compound had boundaries too. Old ones. Power lived here, and authority lived here. And after everything Evander had done, after the Council itself had recognized him as acting
