CHAPTER NINETY FOUR

ZOEY

The sun was already high when I opened my eyes, the kind of light that made you feel like you’d overslept for something important, even when you hadn’t.

I stared at the ceiling for a moment, letting the silence settle around me. There was no whisper from Frankie and no chaos in my chest. Just the quiet after a storm but the peace felt unfamiliar and untrustworthy.

I climbed out of bed, my limbs heavy with everything I didn’t say last night. I padded across the room, washed up slowly, like I had nowhere to be. And maybe I didn’t. Not today. Not in the mood I was in.

I dressed in soft black leggings and a loose shirt. Nothing fancy. Nothing that said I’m going to be seen. Because I wasn’t going to the training grounds.

I told myself it was because I was tired. Because I needed rest. But deep down, I knew the truth, I was avoiding him.

I was avoiding those eyes that looked at me like he knew me so well and avoiding the softness in his voice, the way it made somet

  • The Mate She Can’t See   She was here

CHAPTER NINETY SEVENZOEYThe door was still swinging slightly when I reached the top of the stairs. I paused. It was Nicole. Her scent hung in the air like spoiled perfume, floral, and it left a bitter taste at the back of my throat, too sharp. She breezed past me without a word, without a glance. But her posture said everything: tense, insulted, thrown off. Her heels clicked down the hallway like gunshots, and a second later, the front door slammed hard enough to make the floorboards groan.I stood there for another breath. Then another. And then I moved. I didn’t even knock this time. The office door creaked open.He was standing behind his desk, hand pressed flat against the surface, shoulders squared like he was still bracing for a fight. His expression softened the second he saw me. The steel behind his eyes melted to something gentler and warmer. But I wasn’t sure I trusted that warmth. Not yet.“Did she come to mark her territory?” I asked. His jaw ticked. “She came to remind

  • The Mate She Can’t See   Get out!

CHAPTER NINETY SIXGRAHAMFor the first time in what felt like months, my office wasn’t suffocating.Sunlight spilled through the blinds, casting long golden lines across the desk. Papers lay untouched, reports unread, a pen rolling slowly near the edge of the table, forgetting the moment I let myself think about her.The way her voice had trembled. The fire behind her pain. The bravery in her honesty, even when her words cut straight through me like claws to the chest. She’d let me stay. Just sit there. That alone felt like more than I deserved.I leaned back in my chair, letting a small smile tug at my lips. A real one this time, not one I wore out of habit or for control. Just… peace and a sliver of hope.A soft knock at the door snapped me out of it.I straightened instinctively, adjusting my shirt collar and brushing a hand through my hair. My smile widened before I could stop it.I was expecting Zoey. Only, it wasn’t her.The door creaked open and in stepped Nicole, with her per

CHAPTER NINETY-FIVEZOEYThe silence after his words wasn’t heavy. It was sharp. Like it had edges. And they were pressing in on me, demanding I say something—anything. But I wasn’t ready to speak. Not yet.I looked out the window instead, at the breeze stirring the trees like it had nothing to do with the mess unfolding in this room. My fingers curled tighter around the hem of my shirt, grounding me.“You want to write a new chapter,” I said finally, my voice quiet, almost unreadable.Graham didn’t answer. Didn’t try to fill the silence. He just waited.I turned to him. “Do you even know what the last one cost me?”His brows drew together slightly, but he didn’t interrupt. And that… that was new.“I was angry at you,” I admitted, my voice still low. “But anger was easy. Manageable. It gave me something to hold onto when everything else felt like it was slipping.”I took a shaky breath. “You didn’t just push me away, Graham. You made me feel like I was the enemy. Like something to be

  • The Mate She Can’t See   It’s true

CHAPTER NINETY THREEZOEYThe moonlight poured through the blinds like spilled silver, pooling on the floor and climbing up the walls. I lay in bed, eyes wide open, unmoving. Sleep flirted at the edge of my consciousness, but it wouldn’t come. Not tonight. Not after that dinner.I turned onto my back, staring at the ceiling like it might offer answers. It didn’t. Just like the stars didn’t. Just like my heart didn’t.Dinner had gone… smooth. Too smooth. Graham had looked at me like I was made of something rare. Something important. And I—I didn’t hate it. That was the problem. I didn’t hate it.You’re slipping, Frankie’s voice threaded through my mind, low and smoky.I closed my eyes. “No, I’m not.”Liar, she said, and I could hear the faintest edge of sadness tucked beneath her strength. You let your guard down. You let him in.“I was just being civil.”You were being soft, she corrected. You let him make you laugh. You let him see the curve of your smile. You looked at him like you

  • The Mate She Can’t See   I like her

CHAPTER NINETY-TWOGRAHAMThe night was colder than I expected.I stood on the balcony outside my room, arms resting on the iron railing, eyes lost in the distance. The woods stretched wide and endless, cloaked in silence and moonlight, like they were waiting for something.Or someone. My head was a mess.Dinner with Zoey had gone… well. Too well, honestly. She didn’t shut down. She didn’t storm out. She laughed.Gods, she laughed. And I couldn’t stop thinking about the way her eyes softened when they landed on me, like for a split second, she forgot everything I’d done to make her hate me.It shook me more than I wanted to admit.Behind me, the door creaked open.I didn’t need to turn to know who it was. It was Ronald. His energy was calm but firm, like a stone that’d stand against too many storms. The man had been my Beta, my right hand, my soldier in the trenches. And lately? He was also Zoey’s quiet protector. They were not of the same kind, but he treated Zoey like he would a you

  • The Mate She Can’t See   He’s changing

CHAPTER NINETY ONEZOEYThe night air brushed my skin as I stepped out into the open. It was cold and quiet. Too quiet. The door clicked shut behind me, and with it, the sound of Graham’s voice faded into memory. Still, it echoed in my head, the apology, the laugh, the way he looked at me like I mattered.I walked slowly, gravel crunching under my boots, my arms wrapped around myself like I could hold in the heat that dinner had left behind. I should have felt triumphant. He apologized. He was kind. He even made me laugh.Instead, I felt unsettled.Because kindness from Graham wasn’t something I knew what to do with.Inside me, Frankie stirred.“Don’t get soft.”I stopped walking, closing my eyes.“It was just dinner.” I told her. “He said sorry. That’s all.”“It’s never just dinner. You felt it.”I hated how right she sounded. It felt like she didn’t want anything between Graham and I.There’d been a shift. It wasn’t huge or loud but it was real. Like two cliffs grinding just enough

  • The Mate She Can’t See   I’m sorry

GRAHAMShe came. The door creaked open, and there she was. There was no hesitation, and no drama. Just her, standing there like she owned the moment, even if she didn’t trust it.She wore a pair of black jeans and an olive green top. Nothing fancy, but she wore it like a stunning evening dress. She looked so beautiful in a way that made it hard to breathe.I stood up without thinking. “Hey.”“Hey,” she said back, her voice careful but steady. We stared at each other a second too long. I cleared my throat. “You can sit.”She walked over slowly and slid into the seat across from mine, back straight, eyes watching everything. Like always.“Thanks for coming,” I said as I took my seat again. She raised a brow. “Still not sure what this is.”“It’s just dinner.” I tried to sound casual, trying to ignore the way my heart raced. “Nothing serious.”Her eyes narrowed slightly. “Coming from you, that sounds suspicious.”I gave a half-shrug. “Maybe I’m trying something new. Peace.”Her mouth twit

THE DINNERGRAHAMThere were shirts everywhere. Some on hangers. Most not. One was hanging from the damn lamp like it had been flung there in a fit of despair.I stood in front of the mirror, holding up yet another shirt. Black. Simple. Clean.Too serious.I dropped it on the bed and grabbed a dark green one instead.Too soft.I growled under my breath, yanked open another drawer, and kept digging. Why the hell did I ask her to dinner? The knock on my door came right before Ronald let himself in. No boundaries, as usual.“Graham?” he called out, then froze. “…Did a fashion hurricane blow through here?”I didn’t answer. He stepped inside slowly, surveying the chaos like he’d entered a warzone. “There’s enough fabric in here to clothe a small army.”I held up another shirt and narrowed my eyes at the mirror. “I’m trying to figure out what to wear.”“To…?”Silence.Ronald blinked, then grinned. “Is the Alpha going somewhere that requires… personal grooming?”I ignored him.He kept circli
