Mag-log inChapter 16
ELENA Not a sound. Not a whisper. Not even a breath of air. My lips moved. My throat worked. I was screaming as hard as I had ever screamed in my life, but the room was completely silent. I grabbed my throat with both hands. Panic crashed through me like a wave. "There," Silas said gently. "That's better." I tried again. His name. Just his name. Silas. I pushed it up from my chest with everything I had. Silence. I tried to say help. I tried to say Kade. I tried to say fire. Nothing. Silas walked over to the table. He picked up a small piece of paper and a stick of charcoal that Hilda used for writing labels on her jars. He held them out to me. "Go on," he said. "Try." I snatched them from his hand. I pressed the paper flat against the table and held the charcoal over it. I was going to write it. I was going to write his name in big black letters and show it to everyone in this house. S. That was all I had to write. Just the first letter. My hand wouldn't move. It hung over the paper, shaking. I pushed. I pushed so hard the muscles in my arm started to burn. The charcoal hovered a hair above the page and stayed there, like there was a wall of glass between them. The charcoal snapped in my fingers. I stared at the broken pieces. At the empty white paper. Then I looked up at him, and the tears came. I couldn't stop them. Hot and silent, pouring down my face. "I know," Silas said softly. He reached out and wiped a tear off my cheek with his thumb. I jerked away. He only smiled. "It's frightening, the first time. It gets easier. You'll learn to live with it." He picked up the tray and set it closer to the bed. "Eat your soup," he said. "You need your strength." He walked to the door and unlocked it. Then he stopped with his hand on the handle, and he looked back at me over his shoulder. "Oh," he said. "One more thing." I stood there shaking, my hand still around my throat. "That dagger I gave you in the ring," Silas said. "The one for luck." His smile grew wider. "Who do you think told me to give it to you?" My whole body went cold. No. No, that wasn't possible. Kade had been standing right there. He had frowned. He had nodded. He had said, Take it. Take it. My mind started racing. Kade, who wouldn't tell me the truth about anything. Kade, who always said not yet. Kade, who knew my mother's name. Kade, whose wolves wore the colors that burned my village. Kade, who had turned white as a sheet when he saw that silver pin. Who told me to hide it. Show it to no one. Why? To protect me? Or to protect someone else? I shook my head hard. No. He had bled for me. He had knelt in the dirt of the ring with blood pouring out of his side. He had carried me through the dark. But he had to. Didn't he? If I died, the bond would hurt him too. Maybe he needed me alive. Maybe that was all I was to him. Something he had to keep breathing. Silas watched my face. He looked pleased, like he could see every thought as it crossed my mind. Then the door behind him swung open. Kade stood in the doorway. He was covered in dust from the road. His hair was messy, and there were dark shadows under his eyes. But when he saw me standing by the bed, his whole face lit up. Relief poured through the bond so strong it almost knocked me over. "Elena," he breathed. "You're awake." He took a step toward me. Silas laughed. It was a warm, easy, friendly laugh. He reached out and clapped Kade on the shoulder and squeezed it tight, the way brothers do. "She's all yours, brother," Silas said. And Kade turned to him and smiled. A real smile. Warm and grateful. The same smile he had given me in the training yard. "Thank you for watching her," Kade said. "Always," said Silas. I stood there with my hand around my silent throat, looking at the two of them in the doorway. The alpha and his beta. Shoulder to shoulder. Smiling at each other like nothing in the world was wrong. And the last small piece of hope inside me cracked and broke. They were in it together. They had always been in it together.Chapter 16ELENANot a sound. Not a whisper. Not even a breath of air. Chapter 15ELENAThe first thing I saw was a bundle of dried herbs hanging from the ceiling.Lavender. Sage. Something with small yellow flowers that I didn't know. They swayed a little in the air from an open window. For one sweet, confused second, I thought I was home. I thought I was lying on the old cot in my mother's kitchen, and she was about to walk in with a cup of honey tea and tell me I had slept too long. Then I tried to sit up, and the pain in my side pulled me back down with a cry.I wasn't home. There was no home anymore.I turned my head slowly. I was in a small room with white walls and a wooden floor. Shelves full of jars and bottles covered one whole wall. There was a table with a mortar and pestle, a pile of clean bandages, and a basin of pink water. The healer's room. Hilda's room.I was alone.I lifted the blanket and looked down at myself. My side was wrapped in thick white bandages. Around the edges of them, on my skin, I could see thin dark lines. They were fai
Chapter 14KADEThe elders' hall was packed. Every warrior who could fit inside was standing along the walls. The air was hot and thick and angry.Vera sat on a bench near the fire, wrapped in a blanket. There were dark purple bruises all around her neck. My bruises. The shape of my fingers. Her leg was wrapped in bandages from the heel to the knee. She didn't look at me.Garrett stood up."Vera of the Blackthorn pack," he said. "The challenge was ended. You were beaten. And you attacked the winner from behind after she spared your life. That is against the old law. It is a coward's act."Vera's jaw tightened, but she said nothing."The punishment is exile," Garrett said. "Two months, beyond the northern border. No pack. No shelter. No help. You leave at sunrise."Nobody spoke. Then Garrett turned to me."And you, Alpha," he said. "You nearly killed a member of your own pack. A warrior who has fought beside you for eight years.""She tried to kill my mate.""She did," Garrett said. "A
Chapter 13KADEI don't remember crossing the ring. One moment I was standing outside the stones with my hand pressed against my bleeding side. The next moment I was in the air, and the world around me was a blur of moonlight and screaming faces.I only saw two things. Elena, turning her head too slowly. And Vera, her jaws wide open, her teeth an inch from the back of Elena's neck.I hit Vera in midair. My shoulder slammed into her ribs, and we flew sideways together, past Elena, out of the ring. I felt Vera's teeth snap shut on nothing. Then we hit the ground and rolled, and I was on top of her.I didn't shift. I didn't need to. I grabbed her by the thick fur of her neck with both hands, lifted her off the ground, and threw her.She hit the stone wall at the edge of the clearing so hard the old stones cracked. She yelped once. Then her body twisted and cracked, and the fur pulled back into her skin, and she was human again. She slid down the wall and landed in a heap at the bottom, g
Chapter 12ELENAAcross the ring, someone else did.I heard the gasp ripple through the whole pack. I turned my head, slowly, and I saw him.Kade had dropped to his knees in the dirt outside the stones. His hand was pressed against his side. Blood was spreading across his shirt, dark and fast, in the exact same place as mine. His face was white. His gold eyes were locked on me.The whole pack was staring at him. Their alpha. On his knees. Bleeding for a human girl.Nobody was laughing anymore.Vera pulled her knife out of me. I stumbled but didn't fall. I don't know how. Somehow, through the bond, I could feel something flowing into me. Warm and strong. Holding me together. Holding me up.Kade's strength. He was giving me everything he had.Vera looked over at Kade, then back at me. Her lips curled."You see that?" she whispered, leaning close to my face. "That's what you are to him. A weakness. A chain around his neck." She lifted her knife again and laid the flat of the blade agains
Chapter 11ELENAFor a moment, I couldn't hear the howling.I couldn't hear anything at all except that voice in my head. Soft. Smooth. Almost gentle.Leave no one alive. Especially the girl.Silas.Kade's beta. Kade's oldest friend. The man who smiled at me at the gate and told me nobody would hurt me here. The man who sat at Kade's right hand at every meal.He burned my village. He killed my mother. And he had just walked away into the crowd like nothing happened.I turned my head and searched the faces around the ring. I found him easily. He was standing near the front, his arms folded, his bandaged hand tucked under his elbow. When he saw me looking, he smiled and gave me a small nod.I wanted to scream his name. I wanted to point at him and tell the whole pack what he was.But who would believe me? A human girl who couldn't even remember the last few days of her own life. A human girl who ran away on her first morning. They would laugh. And Silas would smile his kind smile and sa
