Chapter 2

Author: Seven Sevens
When I got home, I didn't turn on the lights. I just sat on the couch, staring at the ceiling in a daze.

Memories came rushing back in waves.

When I first got together with Giovanni, he never minded my dyslexia. Every Valentine's Day, he would write me a love letter by hand. Knowing that I couldn't read it, he would read it to me line by line under the night sky, beneath the stars.

He once said, "Chiara Faraci, your world is missing a window, but I'll be your light."

After we got married, he labeled every bottle in the house with colors. Red for condiments. Blue for cleaning supplies. Green for medicine. Even without reading, I'd never pick the wrong one.

Later, Luigi was born.

Every night, Giovanni would hold him beside me, open a picture book, and read it out loud. On the surface, he was reading to Luigi. But I knew he was reading to me too.

He once told Luigi, "Luigi, your mamma may not be able to read words, but her heart understands. She's smarter than anyone. No one is allowed to bully her. Not even you."

Luigi answered in his baby voice, "Okay! I'll protect Mamma!"

I thought days like that would last forever—until a month ago.

I secretly went for professional training. The results were good. I could slowly recognize common words now.

I rushed home, excited, wanting to surprise them. But the house was empty.

When I walked into the study, Giovanni's computer screen was still on. On it was Maria's pregnancy checkup report and a message from him saying he'd go to her place that night.

My hands trembled as I called him. But it was Luigi who picked up. "Mamma, can you stop bothering Papa? He brought me to discuss family matters. He's very busy. If you're really that bored, clean up the house. I left a leather notebook in the study. Put it back in my room for me."

Following his words, I looked at the notebook. It was open to the last page, with the words written across it, "Mamma held my award certificate upside down again today. I hate how she can't understand anything. Maria is so smart. I wish she could be my mamma."

So, even in Luigi's heart, he had long wanted to replace me.

The pain in my chest pulled me out of the memory. I opened the email from an overseas non-profit organization. It was a job offer to help children with reading disabilities learn to read.

I gently pressed "Accept".

This time, I would leave their world completely. I didn't want either of them anymore.

The sound of the door unlocking rang out. I closed my eyes and didn't move.

Giovanni turned on the light. "Baby, why are you sleeping here? You'll catch a cold."

He lifted me in his arms and carefully placed me on the bed. I pretended to wake, slowly opening my eyes. He smiled and leaned down, his lips wandering and his warm breath brushing against my neck.

Before, I would've responded eagerly. But now, all I could see in my mind were his intimate messages with Maria and her pregnancy report.

I shoved him away and sat up.

Giovanni stumbled back against the nightstand, but didn't get angry. Instead, he cupped my face, seeming even more anxious. "What's wrong? Are you not feeling well? Should I call a doctor?"

I looked at him and said calmly, "It's nothing. I just had a dream. I dreamed that you betrayed me, and I wanted to leave."

His eyes reddened instantly as he pulled me tightly into his arms. "Chichi, that was just a nightmare. It won't happen. It will never happen. I really, really love you. Don't leave me… I can't live without you."

His voice in my ear sounded so sincere. But my tears wouldn't stop falling.

He said he loved me. Yet, he lied to me, hurt me, and betrayed me.

Since he wouldn't honor the promise of "whoever betrays first disappears", then I'd do it for him.

At this point, there was no way the class could continue.Zeke and Jane, who had rushed over after hearing the commotion, worked together to calm the frightened children and led them out of the classroom.I had expected Giovanni to find me eventually. But I hadn't expected him to come so fast and so recklessly. I didn't understand. If his love for me had truly been deep enough for him to abandon everything, then Maria would've never existed in the first place. And if he had chosen betrayal, why put on this act of suffering after I left?I didn't understand. But I had already made up my mind. This was the end for us.With only the three of us left in the classroom, the obsession in Giovanni's eyes reignited. Like a wild beast out of control, he grabbed my wrist, his grip so tight that it felt like he might crush my bones."Come home with me, Chichi." He gritted his teeth, speaking word by word. "That world is where you belong—the world I built for you. Every detail was made out o

I was seeing Giovanni again after months apart. He was no longer the well-dressed mafia Don I remembered. His expensive tailored suit was wrinkled, stubble shadowed his jaw, and he reeked of cigarettes and alcohol. The eyes that once held control were now bloodshot and filled with something close to madness.Luigi was like a frightened animal. He clung to the hem of Giovanni's jacket tightly, his face pale as he stared at me.I wanted to turn and shut the door, but Giovanni lunged forward and trapped me in a tight embrace. His body trembled, and his voice was hoarse beyond recognition. "Chichi, without you, my world is empty… Don't leave me, please…""Mamma!" Luigi's voice shook with sobs. "I'll listen to you from now on. Don't abandon me…"Their appearance was like a boulder crashing into a still lake. The children shrank into corners of the classroom in fear. And then, Zeke moved.Without a word, he stepped forward, pulled me out of Giovanni's arms, and positioned himself betw

After that day, I officially began working at the teaching center.I stopped forcing the children to "read", and instead designed all kinds of sensory games, teaching them to feel the shape and rhythm of words through touch, sound, and even smell. The man who had called me a "natural teacher" was named Zeke Lewis. He was the center's psychology consultant. Whenever my classes began, he would stand quietly in a corner with a cup of coffee and observe.Unlike the other volunteers, he wasn't impatient for results. He simply watched. And when I needed help, he would offer the most precise psychological guidance. After class, he always asked me many questions about how I turned words into tactile experiences and how I calmed children who'd been driven into frustration.Whenever I spoke of the reading struggles that once caused me so much pain, which I had now transformed into methods to help these children, there would always be a trace of admiration and warmth in his sky-blue eyes.L

After flying across half the globe, I finally landed in a foreign country. But what greeted me wasn't the joy of a new beginning, but rather dehydration and brutal jet lag from the long flight. For three whole days, I stayed inside the apartment the organization had arranged, feeling exhausted and disoriented. On the fourth day, the program director, Jane Winter, knocked on my door. "Ms. Faraci, I know you come from a privileged background. But here, no one has time to wait for you to adjust." She handed me a file. "Our children can't afford to wait."Her words were blunt, almost cold, as she spoke. "Every year, people like you come here full of passion, thinking kindness can solve everything. Within three months, they're defeated by the children's frustration and screaming and then book a ticket home in tears."We don't need sympathy. We need people who truly understand their pain. I hope you won't be the next one to run."I understood what she meant.I didn't come here just to

Facing Giovanni's questioning, I forced down my nerves, letting just the right amount of confusion and innocence show on my face. "What?"I took the document from his hand and glanced at it naturally. "Oh, this is probably Sofia's. She wants to apply for a job at an overseas non-profit organization, but she's worried she won't pass the background check. So, she used my name, saying that the identity of 'Donna Marino' would make things easier. She just called and asked me to bring it to her."Giovanni stared at me, as if trying to find a fault. But all he saw was my usual confusion toward written words. Only then did he relax.Luigi chimed in with a smile. "Mamma, guess what we brought you."I paused, then said slowly, "It's a custom-made music box.""How did you know?" Luigi looked surprised. How could I not know? When Giovanni and I first got together, he had given me one. Because I couldn't read the words engraved on it, "Chiara Faraci, I love you", he held me and whispered the

Perhaps Giovanni noticed something was off about me the night before. The next day was a rare free weekend. Instead of going to handle family business, he suggested we go to Sunny Coast. "We've wanted to go to the beach for a long time. We just never had the time."His voice softened as he asked, "Come with me and Luigi today, okay?"Luigi was unusually excited. "My classmates all say that beach is super fun, but it's just too crowded. But this time, Papa booked the whole place for us. Papa is the best!"Before I could refuse, he had already packed the swimsuits. So, I could only follow along. I told myself this would be the last weekend I spent with them before leaving. When we arrived at the beach, the sea breeze was strong. Luigi grabbed my hand and ran across the sand, his laughter scattered by the wind. Giovanni followed behind us the entire time. When I rubbed my arms from the cold, he draped his jacket over my shoulders. When I glanced at the ice cream cart in the distance
