Chapter 2

Author: Lily Pears
I hadn't grown up with them.

The five of them had been together since kindergarten.

I only met Brielle in college, and she was the one who brought me into their circle.

For the first few years, I tried hard to fit in. They'd talk about sneaking peaches from a teacher's tree when they were kids. I had no idea what they were talking about, but I'd laugh along anyway.

They had nicknames for each other that only they understood, and I'd secretly jot them down in my notes app.

I remembered everyone's birthdays, food preferences, and little habits.

Whenever we went out to eat, I was always the first one there.

Whenever we traveled, I was the one who booked the transportation, reserved the hotels, and planned the itinerary.

But no matter what I did, whenever they talked about the past, they always said the same thing: "You didn't know us back then. You wouldn't understand."

Eventually, "you wouldn't understand" became "there's no need to tell him."

If they changed restaurants at the last minute, no one told me.

If they all changed their profile pictures, no one sent me the new one.

Even this trip.

I only found out from Brielle's messages with Anders that they'd been planning it for six months.

When I asked why no one had told me, Brielle had smiled and acted sweet. "We were waiting for you to plan everything."

So I handled the flights, the hotels, and the entire itinerary. I paid for everything upfront too.

In the end, the five of them got to enjoy the vacation.

I arranged everything for them, and now, even the room that was supposed to be mine had to be given up.

I released my grip on the key card. "You guys take the room. I'll go downstairs to the lobby."

I didn't argue anymore.

The next morning, when I woke up, the living room was already empty. There was a photo in the group chat of the five of them having breakfast. Five meals were spread across the table.

Anders had sent me a message: [Clark, we didn't want to wake you, so we came down first. Just grab something when you wake up.]

After washing up, I went to the restaurant.

A server told me breakfast service had already ended.

Right then, Brielle called. "Where are you?"

"The restaurant."

"Why are you still at the restaurant?" She sounded impatient. "We've been waiting at the marina for twenty minutes."

I checked the group chat. Not one of them had told me what time we were leaving. "You never woke me up."

"Didn't Anders message you?"

"He only said you guys went down for breakfast."

Brielle fell silent for a second before turning it back on me. "Wouldn't any normal person see that everyone was gone and think to ask? You're making everyone wait for you."

In the end, I never got breakfast.

By the time I reached the marina, the yacht's engine was already running.

The five of them were standing on deck. No one had saved me a spot.

Brielle was wearing Anders's white shirt. The hem barely covered her thighs. When she saw me, she tugged at the collar.

"Clark, don't get the wrong idea. The zipper on my dress broke, so Anders lent me a shirt."

Brielle was obsessive about cleanliness. She'd never even touched the clothes that I'd worn against my skin.

Once, while doing her laundry, I accidentally washed one of her clothes with something dark and stained it a faint gray. She didn't speak to me for an entire week.

She'd told me she hated other people touching her personal clothes, and she hated wearing anyone else's, but now she was wearing Anders's shirt.

Anders was gently reminding her, "Put on some pants. You'll get cold."

Brielle stuck her tongue out at me. "See? He's always telling people what to do."

I held the railing as I climbed aboard.

Preston immediately shoved a pile of things into my arms. "Perfect. The sunscreen, camera, and water are all here. Keep an eye on them for us."

Holding all their stuff, I sat in the seat closest to the engine.

The sea breeze swept over me. With nothing in my stomach, cramps twisted through my abdomen.

For today's diving trip, I had started learning to swim six months ago.

Brielle loved the ocean while I was afraid of water, but I'd still secretly signed up for scuba lessons without telling her.

I'd planned to surprise her on this trip.

When we reached the dive site, though, the instructor said only five people could go down at a time.

Duncan looked at me with a grin. "Isn't Clark afraid of water? You can stay on the boat and watch our stuff."

I opened my mouth. I wanted to tell them I'd already gotten my scuba certification.

However, Brielle suddenly wrapped both hands around Anders's arm. "Anders, I'm kind of nervous. Hold on to me once we're underwater, okay?"

Anders checked her air tank for her. "Don't worry. I'll be right beside you."

I swallowed the words.

The five of them jumped into the ocean. I sat alone on deck, watching their clothes and phones for them.

After a while, the instructor asked me, "Don't you want to go down?"

I pulled the brand-new scuba certification card from my bag. I stared at it for a long time. Then I shook my head.

"Not anymore."

In the past, I'd waited so long to hear those words. If she'd said them sooner—when they left me behind for the first time, when I first watched the five of them pose for a group photo without me, when I first realized my birthday mattered less to her than Anders's tears—I probably would have gone back. But now, I simply said, "I don't need you to change anymore. Who you love, who you choose, who you stand beside from now on… None of it has anything to do with me."Brielle clenched the ring so tightly that the band dug into her palm, just as it had once dug into mine. "You really don't love me at all anymore?"I was silent for a moment. "I did."Her eyes brightened slightly. But then I added, "Those seven blank cards wore it away, little by little."Brielle didn't leave right away. She stayed in the small town for two weeks.Every day, she showed up at our filming locations. She brought water and checked the vehicles. She quietly took care of all the little things no one notice

Three months later, Brielle finally heard where I was.I'd moved to a small coastal town up north and joined a documentary crew, photographing artisans in remote communities. She traveled through the night and found me beside an old pier.I was wearing a windbreaker, my hair tousled by the ocean breeze, holding up my camera as I photographed an elderly man weaving a fishing net.Brielle stood in the distance and watched me for a long time. It was the first time she'd ever seen me behind a camera that wasn't pointed at the five of them.I was smiling. Not to humor anyone and not because someone had told me to stop ruining the mood. She hadn't seen me smile that freely in years. When the shoot ended, I turned around and saw her. The smile slowly faded from my face."What are you doing here?"Everything Brielle had rehearsed on the way there suddenly deserted her. It took her a long time to speak."Clark, come home."I shook my head. "This is my job.""You can quit." The answer

Over the next week, Brielle searched everywhere she thought I might have gone.No one knew where I was.Her messages gradually shifted from demands to explanations.[Clark, come back.][I can apologize for what happened with the game.][We can still have the wedding.][That ring wasn't meant for Anders.][I already made him give it back.][If you come back, you'll be included in everything from now on.]She stared at that last message for a long time before suddenly realizing how ridiculous it sounded.I'd always been there. They were the ones who had never truly let me in. Now that I'd left, she was finally willing to offer me a place.None of her messages received a response. On the eighth day, Anders came over and placed the ring on the table. "Brielle, aren't we the ones who were supposed to end up together? Before Clark came along, you liked me for years."Brielle looked at the ring. "So what? He's gone now."Anders's voice trembled. "We can start over. The five of u

After her flight landed, Brielle didn't go home. She went straight to my apartment. The door code no longer worked. She knocked for a long time before the landlord finally came upstairs."Looking for Mr. Ortega? He moved out yesterday."Brielle stiffened. "Where did he move to?""I don't know." The landlord handed her a cardboard box. "He said if you came by, I should give you this."Brielle immediately took it. The box was surprisingly light. Inside were all the things she'd given me over the years: a watch that had since been discontinued, a few books, an old sweater, and the camera she'd bought me. She'd given it to me during our second year together."You take great pictures. From now on, you can be in charge of taking all our photos."Back then, I hadn't noticed anything strange about what she'd said. There were six of us. But when she talked about "us," she had meant the five of them.Later, I'd asked her, "What about me?"She'd paused, then grabbed my arm with a laugh.

The next morning, I didn't come back. When Brielle saw that the digital wedding invitations had been deleted, she finally called the wedding planner. "Send the digital invitations to Clark again."There were a few seconds of silence on the other end."Miss Rice, Mr. Ortega officially canceled the wedding last night. All the guests have already been notified."Brielle's brows immediately drew together. "Who gave you permission to cancel it?""Mr. Ortega is the one who signed the contract, and he personally paid all the wedding expenses. He has the right to cancel."Only then did Brielle remember that I'd handled almost everything for the wedding, from the venue to the favors. She'd only glanced at the final budget and complained that I was making everything too complicated."It's just a wedding. We don't need to make such a big deal out of it."For that wedding she thought didn't need to be a big deal, I'd visited more than twenty hotels on my own. I'd sampled more than thirty d

When I wheeled my suitcase out of the hotel, laughter was still drifting from the terrace.Brielle probably thought I was doing what I'd done countless times before—waiting for her to come around and smooth things over.My phone buzzed with a message from her.[You're a grown man. Come back when you're done sulking.]A few minutes later, another message came through.[Anders is drunk. Where did you put the hangover medicine you bought?]I stared at those two messages for a long time before turning off my phone. So even after I'd left, her first thought wasn't to wonder where I'd gone. It was whether I'd remembered to prepare hangover medicine for Anders.By the time I reached the airport, there were forty minutes left before departure. I checked in and dropped off my last suitcase. For seven years, I'd imagined my wedding to Brielle more times than I could count. What her wedding dress would look like. What we'd write on the invitations. What color the centerpieces would be.
