Masuk[Astoria’s POV]
It was ironic and slightly comical how my mother, who was used to dictating and making people work for her, was having to explain things to someone.
The realization made me happy rather than making me feel affronted. And what would I be affronted for? My mother never stood up for me, always blaming me, always nitpicking my every move.
Over the years, I had stopped arguing with my mother. I used to simply absorb everything she said, feeling the bitterness later and lingering for days.
“I’m always mindful,” I said softly, finding my courage this time. Maybe because Viktor simply stood up for me even though he seemed to dislike me, or maybe I was relishing my mother’s loss of power.
I looked at him, and at the same time, Viktor’s gaze shifted to me. It wasn’t cold this time. It wasn’t warm either. It was measuring.
“Yes…yes, I know you are,” my mother murmured, the tone borderline sharp. “I was just…”
“It’s okay, Mom. I know you’re nervous about the wedding,” I replied, giving her a small smile.
The smile I received was sharp, conveying silent warnings.

As days passed, the hustle and bustle of the estate increased. Where the main house used to be quiet, everyone was busy doing one thing or another. I, too, was swept in the tide of excitement. And for once, I was enjoying it. Vladimir asked me about my mother’s choices at times, and I went dress shopping with her.
Things, for once, were less awkward. It also helped me keep my mind off my past and my…future.
A difference that I had noticed was that my mother was radiant in a way I had never seen before.
It made me both wistful and happy. I never hated her after all. But seeing her not snapping at anyone, or me for that matter, was…a good change.
However, during fittings, sometimes I felt more like a shadow than a participant or an observer. But I liked keeping myself in the shadows. I hated attention.
Another change that I unwittingly noticed was related to the man who had not yet been friendly to me.
Viktor.
He began appearing at more of these preparations than I expected.
Like…
“Are those her favorite flowers?” He asked one day when I was overseeing the flower arrangements. He was peering over my shoulder, his breath fanning my bare shoulders as I had planned to wear an off-shoulder dress.
He was far too close for my liking because the proximity was doing things to my heart that shouldn’t be the case.
“Yes. She explicitly told me that these will be present.” I was happy that my voice didn’t shake from the jitters.
But then Vladimir walked in, waving a hand at me, and suddenly that moment was gone.
I had also become friends with a few girls who apparently lived in the estate. They were polite and always respectful.
Then there was Mera, who was stern but always caring. She was more like a mother to me than my biological mother.
“You should also look after yourself,” she once said when I was re-checking the guest list. “You have been busy these days and not taking care of yourself at all.”
It had made me teary-eyed. It had been years since someone cared about me.

Guests began arriving two days before the ceremony.
For some reason, Vladimir stuck by my side as we greeted everyone. I didn’t understand why but I was the object of attention for a lot of them.
“Shouldn’t they be looking at mom?” I asked under my breath.
“Maybe they are wondering how she has a wonderful daughter,” Vladimir answered, always playful. Our camaraderie has become better in the past few weeks. He was friendly, unlike Viktor.
Vladimir was playful, and I sort of liked this because only he made me feel at ease.
The dinner that night was a formal affair.
I was in a purple knee-length A-line dress, while Vladimir wore a blue shirt and paired it with beige trousers, and Viktor wore a dark brown shirt and black trousers.
Only Matthew wore a tuxedo, and my mom a full-length evening dress. They looked gorgeous.
My mom had surprisingly blended in with the lot and even made some friends. I wondered how she could be so natural when her daughter was like a sore thumb.
I was seated beside Vladimir, and Viktor was sitting opposite me.
“Try this,” Vladimir said when he noticed my silence.
He pointed at one of the dishes that I hadn’t yet taken. I smiled and complied.
“Yeah, it’s good,” I said appreciatively.
“I rarely fail when it comes to food,” he said smugly.
I was about to reply when I felt eyes upon me. It was like this intuition, and when I turned my head, I found Viktor looking at us, his expression grave.
What was his problem now?
Instead of paying attention to him, I gazed back at Vladimir. “Well, at least I would be able to try different foods and not fear that it would be bad.”
Vladimir glanced at Viktor once before smiling at me.
Once the dinner was over, I thought it would help me get some relief. I couldn’t wait to just smoosh my face in the pillow and fall asleep.
However, as I excused myself and was about to go upstairs, an elderly woman held me back.
“You are Evelyn’s daughter?” She asked, her green eyes assessing me.
I nodded mutely, managing to give a small smile.
“But you are not—”
“Aunt Clara, there you are.” From nowhere, Vladimir emerged, and very expertly, he stirred her towards the opposite direction.
“But I was—” she protested.
“Dad is looking for you,” he said, interrupting and smiling in a way that seemed polite but left no room for argument.
“Good night, Tori,” he said as he gently tugged him towards the dining hall, and leaving me in confusion.
What did the woman want to tell me? And why did it look like that Vladimir was making an excuse?
[Viktor’s POV]The drive back to our estate was a silent one. Vladimir sat beside me in the SUV, staring out the window while I reviewed some documents on my phone. For years, Moira had hidden behind her title as an Elder and her blood relation to the Romero line. She had questioned my authority more times than I could count, always carefully, never outright, to warrant her eviction. This wasn’t the case during my father's time, but she didn’t hold back from the moment I stepped into the role of the Alpha. However, this time her telling off my father had crossed the boundary."You look like you're planning a murder," Vladimir remarked dryly, breaking the silence.“I want to,” I muttered."That bad?” He knew the situation, but Vlad’s thought process was different.I didn’t reply as my jaw tightened.Twenty minutes later, our car rolled inside the Black Estate.Moira's house sat near the northern edge of Pack territory. It was an older mansion surrounded by trees and enough security to
[Astoria’s POV]I was glad that he hadn’t glanced at me yet or he would have seen the faint blush on my face.“Sit,” he said, finally looking up, so I sat stiffly across from him.“I see you’ve still haven’t run away,” he murmured, his gaze laced with mild amusement.“Why would I? It’s literally my first day,” I countered back. That earned me the faintest twitch at the corner of his mouth as well.“I heard you basically made the HR hire me,” I said nonchalantly.“Did someone bother you for that?” He asked, the amusement dimming slightly.I let out a small sigh. “That’s not…exactly I want, as in…you cannot do that—”“I can, and you are part of the family, hence it is your right to be part of this company,” he interjected, sounding serious.Silence stretched briefly between us before he leaned back slightly in his chair.“What about my earlier company?” I asked tentatively. I had heard from them since morning.“My team has notified them. Don’t worry about it,” he said smoothly.I let ou
[Astoria’s POV]I woke up exhausted because I barely slept last night. For a few moments, I simply stared at the ceiling above me while my mind slowly caught up with reality. Today I will be joining a new position, a new office.Damn.Technically, I was still under contract with my previous company. There had been clauses and conditions buried in pages of legal jargon I had barely read before signing because back then, I had simply been desperate to get some kind of job to stay afloat. Now I was leaving abruptly, that too, without even bothering to notify them.A sane person would probably worry about getting sued. Unfortunately, I was too exhausted to care anymore.Besides, Viktor had said that he would handle that stuff. Men like him probably had lawyers who could destroy companies without blinking. The thought should have comforted me, but it onlt made me shudder. I hoped I’d never get in his bad books.I let out a sigh and dragged myself out of bed.Getting ready took less time th
[Viktor’s POV]I returned long after everyone had gone to bed, exhausted and in disbelief.Kai was still unhappy. He wanted Astoria to be near us, in a place where we could protect her, but I knew that pushing her further would only ruin the progress I had made so far.I slumped into the high-back couch without bothering to undress. Sleep as usual would evade me tonight. I took off the shoes and rested my legs at the edge of the coffee table. My gaze wandered to the photo frame that still sat at the top of my dresser, acting more like a reminder than a memory.Eight years ago, everything in my life had turned upside down.My mother and Avery, my chosen mate, had disappeared. I sank further back into as I was reminded of the night when I returned from a patrol and found their absence.Initially, I thought it was because they had gone for a shopping spree as they had bonded well, but…Then an hour bled into 3, and before I knew it, I was shouting orders to find them. I remembered my dad
[Viktor’s POV]My gaze remained fixed on her retreating figure as she walked out of the café without looking back.I simply sat there, my jaw clenched, replaying every word she had said… and every word I had chosen to say.Everything I had chosen to say was calculated, to protect myself and…her. In such moments, I think that being a human is a blessing for her. She didn’t have to deal with the brunt of carrying a bond that was forged by the Heavens above.I let out a slow breath as I leaned back in my chair, dragging a hand down my face.“She’s not wrong,” I muttered under my breath.A server approached hesitantly. “Sir, would you like anything else?” Which only meant that she was politely asking if she could get the bill so I could leave.“No,” I said shortly, already rising to my feet. “Bring me the bill.”After paying and leaving a generous tip, I stepped out of the café a minute later, the evening air hitting me like a quiet slap.My gaze swept the street instinctively, catching s
[Astoria’s POV]I stared at the screen until my vision blurred. My thumb hovering over the accept button. My heart had already begun to race as intrigue leapt to the forefront. My mind screamed to decline the call, but my traitorous heart wanted to hear the very man’s voice, who I should only see in the familial light.I swallowed and picked up.“Hello?” My voice came out steadier than I felt.“We need to meet and talk,” Viktor said after a brief pause. There was no warmth in his voice or any greeting.Something about that annoyed me immediately.“I’m busy,” I replied, even though my hands were clammy and I was more likely to have a sleepless night after this call.“It won’t take long,” he said, as if my refusal not worth considering.I pressed my lips together, irritation rising. “You could have just told me whatever it is on the phone.”“This isn’t a conversation for the phone.” His voice held enough gravity that I almost agreed before I remembered how he had never checked on me bef
Astoria’s POV]The morning of my mother’s wedding arrived with bright sun rays and a gentle breeze. After waking up, I simply lay there listening to the distant hum of preparation, guests talking and laughing, their voices muted and distant, and the muted footsteps in hallways.I rolled onto my sid
[Astoria’s POV]Unable to endure the weight of his gaze, I excused myself and made my way upstairs, maintaining composure until I reached my room. Only after closing the door did I allow myself to exhale a shaky breath. What the F was that all about? Why was he looking at me like…like I was some ki
[Astoria’s POV]A part of me berated my thoughts earlier. It wasn’t like I was a wallflower. I had received a fair share of attention before, even after getting into a relationship with Shawn. I understood what certain looks meant, and Viktor had felt like that.Attention. Intense attention and may
[Astoria’s POV]I found myself in a sleek black car, the model was high-end, which spoke enough about The Romeros’ status. The car had been discreetly parked so as not to draw attention to strangers. The warmth of the car was almost overwhelming after the cold night air. A chauffeur had put in my s
