LOGIN[Astoria’s POV]
The hallway outside thrummed with laughter and vibrance.
Below were guests whom I didn’t know at all, but for some reason, I did not feel nervous.
My gaze darted to the man beside me and I was struck by the effortless way our strides matched. We weren't touching, but that necklace had changed something.
Vladimir was waiting at the base of the stairs. He straightened as we approached, his usual calm demeanor wavered as he smiled warmly at me.
"You look radiant," he complimented.
I felt a ghost of a smile tug at my mouth. “That’s a very neutral compliment, Vlad."
He didn't offer a witty comeback. Instead, he simply shrugged and opened his hand. Resting in his palm was a slim silver band, its surface etched with intricate engravings that looked ancient.
Another heirloom?
"For protection," he said, his voice dropping an octave.
A familiar tightness gripped my chest. "I didn’t realize weddings required protection."
“It’s a gesture for the daughters,” Vladimir said, his gaze flitting to the necklace and then to Viktor. “It’s a tradition…”
Even though it was hard to believe, especially with the way the brothers exchanged glances, I smiled and thumbed the beautiful bracelet. “Thank you.”
The music outside swelled, a signal that the grace period was over. We moved toward the gardens.
~~~~~
The ceremony was breathtaking. I looked as my mother walked down the aisle towards Matthew, who stared at her like she was the only star in his universe. My throat felt constricted as I watched them exchange vows.
Unbidden thoughts flashed across my mind. For some reason, I was reminded of Shawn again. It was my dream, one of my dreams. But the thing was, Shawn never looked at me with such intensity; he never silently conveyed how much I meant to him.
Maybe it’s people like my mother who snatch and grab their opportunities or make themselves known, or like my ex-best friend, who uses their charm to get the other’s attention, and get this kind of happy ending. Not the likes of me, who love with loyalty and care for those who don’t want the care.
The crowd erupted in applause as they kissed, cutting through my uncharitable thoughts. The music rises to meet the celebration. But as the guests stood, the air in the garden shifted.
Something that caught my eye. I didn’t even think I would take my eyes away from the happy couple.
Lena.
She was one of the people I had made friends with, and she was an extremely down-to-earth person. We had similar likes and dislikes, but right then, I saw her dash out of the gardens like she was afraid.
A chill, needle-sharp and sudden, raced down my spine.
I stepped back from the crowd. Since Vladimir and Viktor had walked over to congratulate our ‘parents’, no one else noticed; they were too busy basking in the glow of the newlyweds.
I followed the hem of her dress along the manicured hedges, moving toward the shadows where the garden met the forest. The transition was smooth as if the garden had blended into the wild.
"Lena?" I called, my voice barely a whisper. My heart rate picked up as this part was completely deserted.
The silence that answered was wrong. The air here felt thick and stagnant, and the distant music sounded like it was coming from underwater. I pushed further into the trees, maneuvering my way and hoping to not to sprain my ankle in the process.
Then, I heard it.
A low, guttural growl that didn't just reach my ears, it vibrated through my very bones.
I froze. Slowly, a shudder ran down my spine. I turned.
The wolf that emerged from the shadows was a nightmare made flesh. Massive, with fur the olorof a magnolia and black eyes that locked onto mine with terrifying iciness.
I had never in my life seen something so massive and dangerous.
My heart slammed against my ribs, a trapped bird. I took a stumbling step back; the wolf matched it, crouching low, its muscles bunching for a lunge. The world narrowed down to the sound of my own frantic heartbeat.
I closed my eyes and readied for the impact or the inevitable because there was no way running would help. I would be caught and maybe meet a worse fate.
A roar ripped through the air, a sound so primal it made the wolf’s growl seem like a whimper.
Viktor.
He was there before I could blink, a wall of sudden, commanding fury between the beast and me. I could only see his back, his shoulders tense, shielding.
"Back," he snarled.
The wolf hesitated for a heartbeat, then launched itself.
The world dissolved into a chaotic symphony of violence.
I fell back, gasping, as Viktor collided with the animal mid-air.
The roar wasn’t human. A scream ripped out of my mouth as I watched the scene unfold in front of me with horror. Snapping of branches, growls, and crunching of bones were the only things I heard, but the movement was a blur.
Someone screamed in the distance, but it felt miles away. With a final, bone-snapping shove, Viktor threw the wolf aside. Wounded and yelping, the creature scrambled into the undergrowth and vanished.
A heavy, suffocating silence fell. Viktor stood a few feet away, his chest heaving, his suit shredded. A line of crimson streaked down his jaw, but it was his eyes that held me. They weren't entirely human; they were wild, dark, and filled with a raw, possessive relief that made my head spin.
A strange feeling spread across my heart, something akin to pride and maybe relief at seeing him unharmed.
“Tori!” I heard Vladimir’s voice before feeling his presence, and then the world began to tilt. The green of the trees bled into the blue of the sky. My vision blurred, and my arms gave out, but I distinctly felt that I did not hit the forest floor.
I felt strong arms hold me close. I knew I was safe, and that is all that mattered.
[Viktor’s POV]The drive back to our estate was a silent one. Vladimir sat beside me in the SUV, staring out the window while I reviewed some documents on my phone.For years, Moira had hidden behind her title as an Elder and her blood relation to the Romero line. She had questioned my authority more times than I could count, always carefully, never outright, to warrant her eviction.This wasn’t the case during my father's time, but she didn’t hold back from the moment I stepped into the role of the Alpha.However, this time her telling off my father had crossed the boundary."You look like you're planning a murder," Vladimir remarked dryly, breaking the silence.“I want to,” I muttered."That bad?” He knew the situation, but Vlad’s thought process was different.I didn’t reply as my jaw tightened.Twenty minutes later, our car rolled inside the Black Estate.Moira's house sat near the northern edge of Pack territory. It was an older mansion surrounded by trees and enough security to
[Astoria’s POV]I was glad that he hadn’t glanced at me yet or he would have seen the faint blush on my face.“Sit,” he said, finally looking up, so I sat stiffly across from him.“I see you’ve still haven’t run away,” he murmured, his gaze laced with mild amusement.“Why would I? It’s literally my first day,” I countered back.That earned me the faintest twitch at the corner of his mouth as well.“I heard you basically made the HR hire me,” I said nonchalantly.“Did someone bother you for that?” He asked, the amusement dimming slightly.I let out a small sigh. “That’s not…exactly I want, as in…you cannot do that—”“I can, and you are part of the family, hence it is your right to be part of this company,” he interjected, sounding serious.Silence stretched briefly between us before he leaned back slightly in his chair.“What about my earlier company?” I asked tentatively. I had heard from them since morning.“My team has notified them. Don’t worry about it,” he said smoothly.I let ou
[Astoria’s POV]I woke up exhausted because I barely slept last night.For a few moments, I simply stared at the ceiling above me while my mind slowly caught up with reality. Today I will be joining a new position, a new office.Damn.Technically, I was still under contract with my previous company. There had been clauses and conditions buried in pages of legal jargon I had barely read before signing because back then, I had simply been desperate to get some kind of job to stay afloat.Now I was leaving abruptly, that too, without even bothering to notify them.A sane person would probably worry about getting sued. Unfortunately, I was too exhausted to care anymore.Besides, Viktor had said that he would handle that stuff. Men like him probably had lawyers who could destroy companies without blinking.The thought should have comforted me, but it onlt made me shudder. I hoped I’d never get in his bad books.I let out a sigh and dragged myself out of bed.Getting ready took less time th
[Viktor’s POV]I returned long after everyone had gone to bed, exhausted and in disbelief.Kai was still unhappy. He wanted Astoria to be near us, in a place where we could protect her, but I knew that pushing her further would only ruin the progress I had made so far.I slumped into the high-back couch without bothering to undress. Sleep as usual would evade me tonight. I took off the shoes and rested my legs at the edge of the coffee table.My gaze wandered to the photo frame that still sat at the top of my dresser, acting more like a reminder than a memory.Eight years ago, everything in my life had turned upside down.My mother and Avery, my chosen mate, had disappeared. I sank further back into as I was reminded of the night when I returned from a patrol and found their absence.Initially, I thought it was because they had gone for a shopping spree as they had bonded well, but…Then an hour bled into 3, and before I knew it, I was shouting orders to find them. I remembered my dad
[Viktor’s POV]My gaze remained fixed on her retreating figure as she walked out of the café without looking back.I simply sat there, my jaw clenched, replaying every word she had said… and every word I had chosen to say.Everything I had chosen to say was calculated, to protect myself and…her. In such moments, I think that being a human is a blessing for her. She didn’t have to deal with the brunt of carrying a bond that was forged by the Heavens above.I let out a slow breath as I leaned back in my chair, dragging a hand down my face.“She’s not wrong,” I muttered under my breath.A server approached hesitantly. “Sir, would you like anything else?” Which only meant that she was politely asking if she could get the bill so I could leave.“No,” I said shortly, already rising to my feet. “Bring me the bill.”After paying and leaving a generous tip, I stepped out of the café a minute later, the evening air hitting me like a quiet slap.My gaze swept the street instinctively, catching s
[Astoria’s POV]I stared at the screen until my vision blurred. My thumb hovering over the accept button. My heart had already begun to race as intrigue leapt to the forefront.My mind screamed to decline the call, but my traitorous heart wanted to hear the very man’s voice, who I should only see in the familial light.I swallowed and picked up.“Hello?” My voice came out steadier than I felt.“We need to meet and talk,” Viktor said after a brief pause.There was no warmth in his voice or any greeting.Something about that annoyed me immediately.“I’m busy,” I replied, even though my hands were clammy and I was more likely to have a sleepless night after this call.“It won’t take long,” he said, as if my refusal not worth considering.I pressed my lips together, irritation rising. “You could have just told me whatever it is on the phone.”“This isn’t a conversation for the phone.” His voice held enough gravity that I almost agreed before I remembered how he had never checked on me bef
[Viktor’s POV]“And?” I probbed.“He…he never talked about his whereabouts either. Please..I’m…I’m innocent, Alpha,” Lena pleaded, her eyes glistening with unshed tears.“You allowed that rogue to enter the territory on my father’s wedding,” I snarled, letting Kai do the talking.She bared her neck
[Viktor’s POV]The moment the sound of the main gates opening came to my ears, I was alert.I had been waiting in the lower hall for over an hour, though “waiting” wasn’t quite the right word. There was nothing passive about the way tension coiled through my body, nothing that could be called calm
[Astoria’s POV]The sound of the wood splintering under a massive force was deafening enough to keep my senses from shutting down completely. My attacker’s head snapped toward the noise, his grip slackening just enough for me to gasp in a ragged breath.A blur of movement crossed the room, but I kn
Astoria’s POV]My breath stilled. I felt as if I was transported back to the forest when the rogue first attacked me.Another low and prolonged growl reverberated through the living room.That wrenched me to the reality.I stayed rooted on my spot, unable to think. My mind refused to process what my
