[Astoria’s POV]

Unable to endure the weight of his gaze, I excused myself and made my way upstairs, maintaining composure until I reached my room. Only after closing the door did I allow myself to exhale a shaky breath.

What the F was that all about? Why was he looking at me like…like I was some kind of prey.

It had been an accidental touch. Skin brushing skin. That was it.

Yet the sensation felt electric, and even now the mere thought of the touch made me shiver.

I let out another shuddering breath and moved toward the window instead, pushing the curtains aside. The chilly morning air caressed my flushed face.

A soft knock came at my door.

I stiffened instinctively before forcing myself to relax. “Who is it?”

There was no answer. Not wanting to be rude, I opened the door.

Viktor stepped inside before I could block his way.

My heart skipped a beat before I could remind myself that this man was my step-brother.

He closed the door behind him, not slamming it, but firmly.

“We have to talk,” he said without any fanfare.

“About what?”

Viktor didn’t answer immediately, but regarded me for a moment.

His gaze was heavy and piercing as if he was trying to restrain something within himself.

It made me want to fidget, to move away or do something to escape his gaze, but I remained frozen in place.

“You will not wander alone in the mansion or around this estate,” he finally said.

I blinked, not expecting this in the least. “Excuse me?”

“The forest beyond the North of the estate is off-limits.”

I stared at him, incredulously. “You came into my room to tell me not to go for a walk?”

Viktor looked away as if realizing how ridiculous he sounded.

When he looked back at me, his gaze seemed neutral. “Well…you’re not just anyone anymore. You’re about to become this estate owner’s stepdaughter, hence the caution.”

The word ‘anyone’ honestly stung. I knew my worth, but that didn’t mean someone like Viktor was allowed to tell me this.

“It’s a bit controlling, don’t you think?” I countered, keeping my tone light.

His gaze sharpened. “Listen—”

“And you can’t just enter a girl’s room and tell her what to do. I mean, Vladimir would have said something if I needed to be careful, wouldn’t he?” I added before he could spout anymore nonesense.

First, he looked at me like that, then this…what was his deal, and why the heck was I so affected?

Silence stretched between us.

He stepped closer this time, slowly, until only a few feet separated us.

“W-what are you doing?” I hated that I stuttered, but I didn’t back down.

He didn’t know that one thing I had taught myself to be good at, and that was self-defense, because, unlike other kids back then, I didn’t have my mom or dad to defend me if anything bad happened.

“When I tell you to listen to something, you listen,” he murmured, and for a moment, or probably it was my imagination, his eyes were black, like there was no white portion, just the pupils.

“Why? And your demand is ridiculous,” I repeated, even though my heart was beating faster now.

Why was I feeling so damn affected by this man’s closeness?

“Because, sweetheart…this is also my estate,” he murmured, his voice going an octave low.

My throat felt dry. Was he like this with every girl? The mere thought, for some reason, made jealousy flare inside me.

“Shall I remind you that we are about to be bound as family?” I muttered, trying my best not to let him come closer.

His blue eyes seemed to be searching for something before he chuckled, a throaty sound that did things to my insides.

Stepping back, he repeated, “Family, eh?” The sharpness in his gaze was gone, replaced by amusement.

“What’s so funny?” I crossed my arms across my chest.

He shook his head, but I could see that he was trying to hide a smile, not a good one, a mocking smile.

“Nothing. Just keep in mind what I said, and we should be good.” Without giving me any chance to even argue, he opened the door and left the room.

What was this man’s deal?

It took me several minutes to calm my wildly beating heart and remind myself that having any kind of feelings for a stepbrother was not normal.

“You left the breakfast table so abruptly. You embarrassed me,” Mom said, her lips downturned.

I wanted to roll my eyes, but in front of the woman who was currently massaging her shoulders and neck, I had to keep up my appearance. We were currently in the vast sitting room, which apparently belongs to Mom now.

She had called me, and I had foolishly assumed that she would finally have some heart to heart chat, where she would tell me all about meeting Matthew and everything, but I was wrong.

The moment I had stepped in, she had begun her tirade.

I couldn’t help but admire the way she had changed. Her normal clothes were swapped for designer shirts and trousers, her brown hair was no longer tied up in a neat bun but elegantly lay on her shoulders in curls, her skin had gotten back its lustre, and her posture had also improved. Overall, she didn’t look like a woman in her late 40s but someone in her late 30s.

“Apologies, mother,” I murmured.

One thing had remained the same, and that was her disappointment in me. She was never happy with anything I said or did.

“Apology is not everything! You need to learn how to behave around people. Is this how I brought you up?” She chided.

I wanted to say, “When did you bring me up? It was I who raised myself.” But I remained silent and lowered my gaze.

“I don’t think she just left the table; she excused herself,” Someone cut in.

I looked up, startled, and found none other than Viktor standing at the doorway. He was in a blue three-piece suit, and unfortunately, looking extremely handsome.

I quickly lowered my gaze again before he could catch me gawking at him.

“Ah…no, I was just, you know, admonishing her for not eating. She wasted so much food,” Mom said, and I noticed the way her tone had changed. From sharp, it had turned placating.

I guess I wasn’t the only one who was scared of this frigid man.

  • The Moon Marked Him As Mine   The Past

[Viktor’s POV]I returned long after everyone had gone to bed, exhausted and in disbelief.Kai was still unhappy. He wanted Astoria to be near us, in a place where we could protect her, but I knew that pushing her further would only ruin the progress I had made so far.I slumped into the high-back couch without bothering to undress. Sleep as usual would evade me tonight. I took off the shoes and rested my legs at the edge of the coffee table. My gaze wandered to the photo frame that still sat at the top of my dresser, acting more like a reminder than a memory.Eight years ago, everything in my life had turned upside down.My mother and Avery, my chosen mate, had disappeared. I sank further back into as I was reminded of the night when I returned from a patrol and found their absence.Initially, I thought it was because they had gone for a shopping spree as they had bonded well, but…Then an hour bled into 3, and before I knew it, I was shouting orders to find them. I remembered my dad

  • The Moon Marked Him As Mine   Persuasion

[Viktor’s POV]My gaze remained fixed on her retreating figure as she walked out of the café without looking back.I simply sat there, my jaw clenched, replaying every word she had said… and every word I had chosen to say.Everything I had chosen to say was calculated, to protect myself and…her. In such moments, I think that being a human is a blessing for her. She didn’t have to deal with the brunt of carrying a bond that was forged by the Heavens above.I let out a slow breath as I leaned back in my chair, dragging a hand down my face.“She’s not wrong,” I muttered under my breath.A server approached hesitantly. “Sir, would you like anything else?” Which only meant that she was politely asking if she could get the bill so I could leave.“No,” I said shortly, already rising to my feet. “Bring me the bill.”After paying and leaving a generous tip, I stepped out of the café a minute later, the evening air hitting me like a quiet slap.My gaze swept the street instinctively, catching s

[Astoria’s POV]I stared at the screen until my vision blurred. My thumb hovering over the accept button. My heart had already begun to race as intrigue leapt to the forefront. My mind screamed to decline the call, but my traitorous heart wanted to hear the very man’s voice, who I should only see in the familial light.I swallowed and picked up.“Hello?” My voice came out steadier than I felt.“We need to meet and talk,” Viktor said after a brief pause. There was no warmth in his voice or any greeting.Something about that annoyed me immediately.“I’m busy,” I replied, even though my hands were clammy and I was more likely to have a sleepless night after this call.“It won’t take long,” he said, as if my refusal not worth considering.I pressed my lips together, irritation rising. “You could have just told me whatever it is on the phone.”“This isn’t a conversation for the phone.” His voice held enough gravity that I almost agreed before I remembered how he had never checked on me bef

  • The Moon Marked Him As Mine   The Impact

[Viktor’s POV]“And?” I probbed.“He…he never talked about his whereabouts either. Please..I’m…I’m innocent, Alpha,” Lena pleaded, her eyes glistening with unshed tears.“You allowed that rogue to enter the territory on my father’s wedding,” I snarled, letting Kai do the talking. She bared her neck in submission. “I…I…didn’t mean to. He…he threatened to tell Elder Moira about me having an affair with several…”Before she could utter more, my fingers were wrapping around her neck. “You dare to tell me that you sleep around with rogues and think that I would spare you.”Lena struggled, her wolf surfacing.“Call Elder Moira now!” I barked at my beta, Sam, through the mindlink.“Yes, alpha.”He was efficient with his task as 15 minutes later, Elder Moira slammed open the door to my study.“Why was I summoned so unceremoniously, Alpha Viktor? Where is your father? I would like to talk to him about this disrespectful—” Her words came to a halt when her gaze fell on Lena, who sat with her ha

  • The Moon Marked Him As Mine   Disagreements

[Viktor’s POV]The next morning, Vladimir walked into my study, wearing a crisp blue button-down and gray trousers. “I knew you would be here. Couldn’t sleep?”“No, I just had some paperwork, so I came in early,” I lied, sorting through the stack of papers.I could feel my brother’s gaze on. He wasn’t going to rest easy until he could get Astoria back in the estate, but he didn’t know how dangerous that could be.He thought of her as a sister and probably saw me as the person who couldn’t accept someone as a half-sibling.I closed my eyes briefly.“Did you think of something?” He asked, and I knew what he was talking about.“About what?” I murmured as I glanced at the laptop screen.“You know very well what I mean.” Vladimir’s eyes blazed with muted anger.I gazed back at him. Silence followed, heavier this time.He let out a slow exhale as if to control his anger.“You stopped her at the beginning anyway,” he murmured. “You didn’t stop at anything.”My jaw tightened. “That was differ

  • The Moon Marked Him As Mine   Alpha's Wrath

[Viktor’s POV]The moment the sound of the main gates opening came to my ears, I was alert.I had been waiting in the lower hall for over an hour, though “waiting” wasn’t quite the right word. There was nothing passive about the way tension coiled through my body, nothing that could be called calm about the restlessness of my wolf. The moment Vladimir had reached out through the mindlink and told me what had happened, something inside me had snapped into a cold, sharpened focus.A rogue had tracked her, and I just knew that the rogue wouldn’t be just anyone, but maybe the same or from the same circle that attacked her when she was here. The doors opened, and instantly I could smell the stench of a rogue’s blood and my brother’s…and…Astoria’s. The last bit made my blood boil a bit more.Vladimir walked in, looking calm like he always did, though there was a tightness in his posture that betrayed the strain of what had happened.Behind him, two of our men carried the unconscious body of
