The light in the north was not a fire.

It came up over the ridge in a white column and it did not move and it did not flicker and the whole of the territory could see it. The pack came out of their houses and stood in the roads and the yards with their coats over their nightclothes and their faces turned up to it.

I stood in the pack house yard with June and Elias and Silas and I watched it come up over the ridge.

“That is the north road,” I said. “That is where the company is.”

“That is where the company is,” Silas said. “And that light is not a lantern and it is not a fire.”

Elias was standing at the fence with his hands on the rail.

“It is the stone,” he said.

“What?”

“The stone in the doll.” He turned around. “The stone from the vault in Boise. It is a founder’s piece and it is a key and it is cold and the light is coming out of the north where the company is camped.” He came across the yard. “Wren. The company is not camped. The company is standing in a circle.”

I stared at him.

“What circle?”

“There is a circle in the north,” Elias said. “There is a circle on the north road at the gap. I have seen it. It is old and it is small and it is made of nine stones and it was built by the founders in 1891 when they made the boundary.” He put his hand on my arm. “The founders built nine stones on the north road and they put a piece of the boundary stone under each one. And the piece in the doll is the tenth.”

I stood in the yard.

“They are going to claim the territory from the north,” I said.

“They are going to claim the territory from the north,” Elias said. “The Alphas of the north have a circle and they have a piece of the stone and they have forty men and a cannon. And tonight is the new moon.”

I turned and looked at the sky.

The moon was not up. The sky was black and the stars were out and there was no moon anywhere.

“The new moon is tonight,” I said.

“The new moon is tonight and the new moon is the night the curse moves and the new moon is the night I change.” Elias put his hand on his chest. “And the stones in the vault are cold and the stone in the north is lit and the whole of it is moving.”

I stood in the yard.

“Then we go north,” I said.

“Wren,” Silas said. “There are forty men and a cannon.”

“Then we go north with a hundred wolves and the whole of the pack and we stand in that circle and we take the piece back.”

And then the light in the north went out.

It went out like a lamp and the ridge was dark and the whole of the territory was dark and there was a sound from the north that was not a sound I had heard before.

It was a howl. It was a long low howl and it came down the ridge and across the field and into the yard and it was not one wolf. It was forty.

Elias went down on his knees in the yard.

“Elias,” I said.

“It is the new moon,” he said. His voice was already changing. “It is the new moon and the curse is not broken and I am going to change.” He looked up at me and his eyes were amber and they were going strange. “Wren. Get the stones. Get the heart and the piece out of the vault and get them into the circle. Do not wait for me.”

“I am not leaving you.”

“You have to.” He put his hand on the ground. “The new moon is not the full moon. The curse is not going to break tonight. But the wolf is going to run and the wolf is going to run north and the wolf is going to run to the stone.”

“Then I will run north with you.”

“Wren.”

“I am not leaving you,” I said again.

And then the howl came again and it was closer and the pack wolves in the yard turned and looked north and the whole of the territory went still.

Silas came up the steps with a paper in his hand.

“Alpha,” he said. “The company has crossed the gap. They are on the north road and they are coming down the co-op road and they have the cannon and they have the stone.”

I stood in the yard.

“How long?” I said.

“An hour,” Silas said. “Maybe less.”

I looked at Elias on his knees in the yard and the pack in the road and the dark ridge and the light that was gone.

“June,” I said. “Get the heart and the piece out of the vault and get them to the circle and do not stop for anything.”

June went.

“Mrs. Bell,” I said. “Get every wolf in this territory into the square and get the rifles and the shovels and the fence posts and tell them the company is on the co-op road.”

Mrs. Bell went.

“Silas,” I said. “Go to the north line and watch the road and come back and tell me when they are a mile out.”

Silas went.

And then I knelt down in the yard beside Elias.

“I am here,” I said.

“Wren,” he said. His voice was not his voice any more. “I am going to change and I am going to run and I am not going to know you.”

“I know.”

“And you have to let me go.”

“I am not going to let you go,” I said. “I am going to run with you.”

He looked at me with his amber eyes going strange.

“You cannot run with me,” he said. “You have to hold the territory.”

“The territory can wait,” I said. “You cannot.”

And then he changed.

It was fast and it was hard and it was not like the new moon in the field. It was the whole of him going from a man to a wolf in three breaths and it hurt him and he cried out and the cry turned into a growl and then he was on four legs in the yard with his fur up and his eyes on the north.

He ran.

I ran after him.

We went up the co-op road and across the north line and into the trees and the wolf was fast and I was fast and the mark on my shoulder was burning. I could feel the rope between us and it was tight and it was pulling and it was pulling north.

And then the trees ended and the north road was in front of us and the company was on it.

There were four trucks and forty men and a cannon and they were in a line across the road and they had lanterns and rifles and they were standing in a circle of nine stones.

And in the middle of the circle there was a wolf.

It was old and it was gray and it had a scar through its eyebrow and it was standing on the flat stone with a piece of the boundary stone in its mouth.

It was Halloran.

Elias stopped at the edge of the trees and his fur went up and the growl that came out of him made the lanterns shake.

And then Halloran dropped the stone and lifted his head and howled.

The whole of the north answered him.
