Chapter 140: The War at the Ridge

last update publish date: 2026-10-26 00:24:44

The Council came down the ridge road in a line four hundred long and they did not stop at the gap.

They came through the north fence and into the east field and the whole of the field was full of them and the whole of them had rifles and axes and silver on their belts.

And there were eleven Alphas in front of them on horses.

I stood at the stone wall with the whole of the pack behind me and the whole of the Luna's line and the whole of the eleven Alphas of the north and the keeper.

"Pack," I said. "Hold the wall."

The first line came to the wall and the wall held.

The second line came and the wall held.

The third line came and the wall broke in three places and the whole of the east field was full of wolves.

I was in the middle of it.

It was the same as it had been the first time and it was different. The first time I had been a Gamma with a fence post and a pack that had been lied to. This time I was the Alpha and the whole of the territory was behind me and the whole of the line was behind me and the eleven Alphas of the north were behind me and the keeper was at my side.

I do not remember the whole of it.

I remember Ruth of the Riverside pack on the fallen wall with a rifle. I remember Thomas the old wolf with his hoe. I remember Margaret of the Walla Walla pack standing in the middle of the field with her coat off and her hands at her sides and three Council wolves on the ground in front of her.

I remember Dale.

He was in the north gap with a length of chain in his hands and he was holding the gap and he did not go back. He put one wolf down and then another and then a third and then a wolf came at him with a knife and he took the knife away and he did not use it.

And I remember Elias.

He was at my side the whole of it. He did not go in front of me and he did not go behind me. He stood beside me and the whole of the field knew it.

And then the eleven Alphas on their horses came through the field.

They came in a line and they had silver in their hands and they went for the middle of the wall where the whole of the line was standing.

"Ruth," I said. "Hannah. Get the line back."

The line went back.

And the eleven Alphas came through the gap.

The first one came off his horse and went for Ada Kessler in her chair and I put my shoulder into him and he went down. The second one came and Elias took him. The third one came and Mrs. Pike hit him with a shovel.

And then the fourth one came and he was not an Alpha.

He was a wolf in a gray coat with a silver blade in his hand and he went for me.

I did not see him come. I was on the ground with the first Alpha and my hands on his wrists and the wolf in the gray coat came out of the crowd and put the blade into my shoulder.

It burned.

It burned the way the silver had burned in the challenge and it went down my arm and into my chest and I could not move my hand.

"Alpha," the wolf said. "The Council sends its regards."

And then Elias was there.

He took the wolf by the coat and put him on the ground and the blade went out of my shoulder and into the mud and Elias put his knee in the wolf's back and held him.

I sat up in the mud.

The whole of the field was still fighting and the whole of the wall was down and the whole of the line was scattered and I could not feel my arm.

And then I heard it.

It was a horn. It was three long notes and it came from the ridge road and it was not the Council's horn and it was not the north's horn.

It was the horn of the Council of Alphas.

The whole of the field stopped.

And then a wolf came down the ridge road on a horse with a white flag and a herald beside him and he was the Alpha of the Alphas.

"The Council of Alphas has ruled," the herald called. "The petition is withdrawn. The eleven Alphas who signed it are removed from their seats and their territories and their packs. The keeper is confirmed. The child is confirmed. And the land is the pack's."

The field was silent.

The eleven Alphas on their horses turned and looked at the ridge road.

And then the Alpha of the Alphas came into the field and got off his horse and walked to the middle of it and stood in front of me.

"Alpha," he said. "I could not stop the vote. But I could call the full Council and the full Council has ruled and the eleven are removed." He put his hand out. "The war is over."

I sat in the mud with my arm hanging and the silver burn on my shoulder and the whole of the field around me.

"The war is over," I said. "And there are eleven Alphas who are going to answer for the whole of it."

"They will answer," the Alpha of the Alphas said. "In Boise. In front of the full Council. In a month."

I stood up.

And then June came across the field with her face white and her hands shaking.

"Wren," she said. "It is Elias. He is down."

I turned.

He was on the ground at the north end of the wall with the wolf in the gray coat beside him and his hands on his chest and his face gray.

I ran.

"Elias," I said. "Elias."

He opened his eyes.

"Wren," he said. "The blade. It was silver and it went into my chest."

I put my hands on his chest and there was blood on my hands and the blood was warm and it would not stop.

"Maeve," I said. "Maeve."

Maeve came across the field with her bag and she put her hands on his chest and she looked at me and her face was gray.

"Alpha," she said. "The blade went deep."

I sat in the mud with his head in my lap and the whole of the field around me.

"Elias," I said. "Do not leave me."

He looked up at me.

"I am not leaving you," he said. "I have been waiting for you since 1968 and I am not going to leave you now."

And then he closed his eyes.
