Arabella was halfway through reviewing a set of quarterly reports when her assistant called from the doorway.

“The records specialist is here.”

She looked up. “Already?”

“He called this morning. Your father’s office approved the preliminary meeting, and he’s ready to explain what he needs from us.”

Arabella closed the report. “Send him in, please.”

A few minutes later, a man in his early fifties entered carrying a slim leather folder. He introduced himself as Daniel Reeves, an independent finan

Arabella had not expected to see Adrian at the Montgomery Foundation’s planning reception. The event was smaller than the annual gala, intended for sponsors and committee members who wanted to discuss the foundation’s next projects. She had spent most of the afternoon reviewing the programme and making sure the evening would run smoothly. When Adrian entered, she was standing beside the display of photographs from the foundation’s previous initiatives.“You look surprised,” he said as he approached.“I thought you had more important things to do.”“I do. I decided to disappoint them for an hour.”She gave him a measured smile. “How generous.”“I’m told the foundation does good work.”“It does. Though I doubt you came here solely to admire the photographs.”“Perhaps I wanted to see whether you were still working through dinner.”“I ate.”“I’m relieved.”Before she could reply, a woman approached them. She was poised, dressed in a simple black evening gown, and greeted Adrian with the e

Arabella had always found her father’s study comforting. It was one of the few places in the Montgomery residence that had remained almost unchanged over the years. The dark wooden shelves, the old photographs and the large desk by the window carried memories of a time when the family seemed untouchable.Tonight, however, the room felt unfamiliar.Richard stood by the window, looking through the latest correspondence from the company’s finance department.“Two suppliers have agreed to extend their payment deadlines,” he said. “The others haven’t responded.”Arabella placed her folder on the desk. “The legal team has reviewed Adrian’s proposal. There are several conditions we’ll need to negotiate.”Richard sighed. “Everything seems to require a negotiation these days.”“That’s because we’re no longer in a position to take things for granted.”He looked at her. “You sound like me.”“I hope not entirely.”A faint smile crossed his face, but it disappeared quickly.“Your mother used to sa

Arabella read Adrian’s proposal twice before calling her father. The document was concise, but its implications were not. Knight Enterprises would provide a substantial investment in Montgomery Holdings in exchange for a negotiated interest in the waterfront redevelopment. The proposal also included a seat on the project’s steering committee and access to relevant planning and development information. It was a serious offer. It was also a serious amount of influence to hand to a man whose family history was tied to theirs. Her father arrived in her office twenty minutes later.“You’ve read it?” Richard asked.“Twice.”“And?”“I want to know why Adrian is so interested in this particular project.”Richard lowered himself into the chair opposite her. “The waterfront has always had potential.”“That isn’t what I asked.”He looked at the proposal. “Knight Enterprises has the resources to develop it. We don’t have the same flexibility at the moment.”“So you think we should accept?”“I thi

Arabella was still at her desk when the last of the office lights began switching off around her.The foundation reception had been two evenings ago, but the conversations from that night continued to follow her. A supplier had requested an earlier payment date. One of the directors had asked for another review of the company’s expenses. Her father had become increasingly difficult to reach, retreating into meetings whenever she tried to discuss the pressure they were facing. She rubbed her forehead and looked again at the figures on her screen.A knock sounded against the open door.“Still here?”Adrian stood in the doorway, his coat folded over one arm.Arabella glanced at the clock. “Do you make a habit of checking whether people have gone home?”“Only when I suspect they’re making poor decisions.”“Then you must be very busy.”He entered, placing his coat over the back of a chair. “I was meeting your father. He mentioned the board’s concerns.”“Of course he did.”“He also mentione

By the end of the week, Arabella had learned that a company could look perfectly healthy from the outside while struggling to keep its balance behind closed doors. The board meeting was scheduled for ten. Before it began, she reviewed the latest figures with the finance director, paying particular attention to the delayed payments and the requests for revised terms from two long-standing suppliers.“Are we in a position to meet the obligations due this month?” she asked.“We can meet the immediate ones,” he replied. “But it will leave us with less room than I would like.”“And next month?”He hesitated. “That depends on whether the outstanding client payments come in on schedule.”Arabella closed the folder. “Then I want a clear breakdown of what is confirmed and what is still expected. We cannot keep presenting projections as though they’re guaranteed.”“I agree.”The board meeting itself was less straightforward. One director questioned whether the company should postpone its upcomi

The following morning, Arabella arrived at the office earlier than usual. Her assistant informed her that Daniel Reeves was waiting in the conference room. The first set of records had been assembled, and the consultant was ready to begin.“Please let the finance team know I’ll join them shortly,” Arabella said.Daniel had arranged the documents into neat groups across the table. Two members of the finance team sat opposite him, reviewing the schedules he had requested.“Good morning,” Arabella said.“Good morning, Miss Montgomery.” He indicated the chair beside him. “We’ve received the initial material. It’s enough to begin checking the reference system, though I may need further records once I understand how the older entries were organised.”“Whatever you need, send the request through me.”“I’ll keep the scope narrow for now. I don’t want to draw conclusions before the records have been properly compared.”The meeting continued for another half hour. Daniel explained his approach,
