Arabella had always believed the truth eventually revealed itself.

Sometimes through a confession.

Sometimes through a careless remark.

And sometimes through the expression of a man who thought he had hidden his secrets well.

Her father was wearing that expression now.

Richard Montgomery stood near a ballroom window, his phone pressed to his ear. His shoulders were rigid, and his free hand gripped the edge of a table.

He looked nothing like the man who had welcomed guests earlier that evening.

Arabella’s smile faded.

She crossed the ballroom and found him just as he ended the call.

“Dad?”

Richard startled before slipping his phone into his jacket.

“Arabella. Is everything all right?”

“That’s what I was going to ask you.”

“I’m fine.”

She folded her arms. “Whenever someone says that before I’ve even asked the question, it usually means the opposite.”

A faint smile touched his lips.

“You’ve always been too observant for your own good.”

“And you’ve always been terrible at lying to me.”

For a moment, he said nothing.

“Is something wrong with the company?” she asked.

“Not here, Arabella.”

“Then where? You’ve barely been yourself for weeks. You’re constantly on the phone, and every time I ask what’s happening, you tell me not to worry.”

“Because I don’t want you worrying.”

“That isn’t an answer.”

He exhaled slowly and reached for her hand.

“Whatever happens, I need you to remember something. You are more than this family name. More than our money, our company, or anything people might say about us.”

Arabella stared at him.

“Dad, you’re frightening me.”

“I’m sorry.”

“Then tell me what’s going on.”

His phone vibrated again. He glanced at the screen, and his expression changed.

He rejected the call.

“Please,” he said quietly. “Just trust me for now.”

“How can I trust you when you won’t tell me anything?”

“Because I’m your father.”

It wasn’t the answer she wanted.

Before she could press him further, Richard straightened his jacket.

“Go back inside. Tonight is important, and I don’t want you spending it worrying about me.”

She watched him return to the ballroom, a knot forming in her stomach.

For the first time, she wondered whether her father was keeping something from her that might change everything.

Sebastian found her beside the drinks table.

“There you are. I’ve been looking for you.”

She turned toward him. “I was speaking to my father.”

“Is everything okay?”

“I’m not sure. He received a worrying phone call, but he wouldn’t tell me what it was about.”

Sebastian’s hand stilled on her arm.

“What kind of call?”

“I don’t know. I didn’t see the number.”

“Did he say who it was?”

Arabella studied him.

“No. Why?”

He gave a short laugh. “No reason. I just wondered.”

Something about his response felt strange, though she couldn’t explain why.

Before she could question him, another voice interrupted.

“Your father has a talent for making problems disappear until they become impossible to ignore.”

Arabella turned.

Adrian Knight stood a few feet away, his expression unreadable.

“Do you practise appearing whenever you’re least wanted?” she asked.

“Natural talent.”

“How unfortunate for everyone around you.”

Sebastian offered him a polite smile.

“Knight.”

“Cole.”

Their exchange was brief, but Arabella noticed something pass between them. Not friendliness, exactly. Something she couldn’t identify.

Adrian turned back to her.

“Has your father told you about the company’s outstanding obligations?”

Her smile disappeared.

“What obligations?”

“The ones your family has been trying to manage quietly.”

Her stomach tightened.

“How would you know anything about my family’s finances?”

“Perhaps you should ask your father.”

“Why don’t you tell me yourself?”

“Because I have no obligation to protect you from the truth.”

Anger rose through her.

“You know nothing about my family.”

“Is that what you believe?”

“That is what I know.”

Adrian held her gaze for a moment before looking toward Sebastian.

“Enjoy the rest of your evening.”

Then he walked away.

Arabella turned to her fiancé.

“Did you know about this?”

“About what?”

“The company’s financial problems.”

“No, of course not.”

His answer came too quickly.

She searched his face, but Sebastian only squeezed her hand.

“Arabella, you can’t believe everything Adrian Knight says. He’s trying to get under your skin.”

Perhaps he was.

But Adrian hadn’t looked like a man inventing a rumour for amusement. He had looked like someone who knew precisely how bad things were.

And Sebastian’s reaction had been almost as unsettling as the accusation itself.

Across the room, Richard Montgomery glanced at his phone again.

Arabella followed his gaze.

For the first time that evening, she wondered whether Adrian Knight had been expecting that call.

And if he had, what did he know that her own family wasn’t telling her?

By early afternoon, Arabella had convinced herself that she was making progress. Her father had agreed to cooperate with the records review, at least in principle. Adrian’s office had confirmed that the specialist would make contact. For the first time since Vanessa placed the document in her hands, there was a practical next step that did not depend on guessing what anyone was hiding. It should have been reassuring.Instead, she found herself wondering how Sebastian would react if he knew an independent review was underway. Her phone buzzed.Vanessa: Lunch? I’m nearby.Arabella glanced at the reports covering her desk. She had barely eaten breakfast, and a conversation with Vanessa might be exactly the distraction she needed. She replied with the name of the café downstairs.Vanessa arrived ten minutes later, carrying her usual bright smile and two takeaway coffees.“You look like you’ve been arguing with spreadsheets,” she said, placing one cup in front of Arabella.“Spreadsheets ar

Arabella woke the next morning with the uncomfortable feeling that she had agreed to something without knowing what it was.Sebastian’s promise replayed in her mind: if he discovered anything connected to the waterfront project, he would tell her. It had sounded sincere over dinner. But sincerity was difficult to measure, especially when the person offering it had already admitted to knowing more about the company’s troubles than he had initially let on.She pushed the thought aside and got ready for work.At Montgomery Holdings, the day began with a stack of reports and a message from her father asking her to stop by his office when she had time. Arabella answered that she would come after reviewing the morning’s updates. She wanted to arrive with something more useful than suspicion. The reports offered no dramatic revelation. A few older transactions still needed supporting documents, and the finance team had identified inconsistencies in how some historical references were recorde

Arabella made it through the rest of the afternoon without seeing Adrian again, which should have been a relief.Instead, she caught herself glancing toward the lobby whenever footsteps passed her office. It was irritating. Adrian Knight had offered her a contact, a few sensible cautions, and a ride she had refused. None of that justified the amount of space he occupied in her thoughts. Before she could decide what to do with the rest of her evening, her phone rang.Sebastian’s name appeared on the screen.“Were you planning to avoid me all evening?” he asked when she answered.“I wasn’t aware my schedule required your approval.”“It doesn’t. But I was hoping to see you.”His voice was warm, familiar, almost effortlessly reassuring. Arabella had spent years believing that knowing Sebastian meant understanding him. Lately, she was beginning to wonder whether familiarity had simply made it easier to overlook the things she did not understand.“I’m still at the office,” she said.“Then l

Later that afternoon, Arabella had almost finished her email to the records specialist when her assistant appeared at the door.“Mr Knight is still downstairs,” she said. “He asked whether you’d be available for a quick conversation before he leaves.”Arabella looked at the clock. “Does he make appointments, or does he simply assume the world will rearrange itself around him?”“I believe he asked politely.”“That’s worse. It makes it harder to complain.”Her assistant smiled and disappeared.Arabella stared at the email on her screen. She could decline. Adrian had already given her the contact details, and she had made it clear she intended to handle the verification herself. There was no reason to see him again.Which was precisely why she found herself reaching for her bag.She told herself she wanted to ask one practical question.Adrian was waiting near the lobby windows, speaking quietly on his phone. His expression was composed, but his shoulders carried a tension she hadn’t not

  • The Price of Being Mrs Knight   Chapter 13 - The Man Behind the Name

The next morning, Arabella arrived at Montgomery Holdings determined not to think about Adrian Knight. She lasted until nine fifteen. The records specialist had agreed to examine the document, provided she explained where it came from. Arabella had given him only the necessary details; she wasn’t ready to put Sebastian’s name into another person’s hands.A knock sounded against her open door.Vanessa stepped inside carrying two takeaway cups. “Peace offering.”“For what?”“For making you work through lunch yesterday. And because you look like you’ve been arguing with a spreadsheet all night.”“I was arguing with a man, actually. The spreadsheet was innocent.”Vanessa placed a cup beside her keyboard. “Adrian?”Arabella gave her a look. “Why does everyone assume every difficult thing in my life has something to do with him?”“Because you say his name like you’re trying to win an argument with it.”Arabella reached for the coffee to hide her smile. “He gave me a contact for an independe

  • The Price of Being Mrs Knight   Chapter 12 - An Unwelcome Distraction

Arabella remained at her desk long after Adrian Knight had left Montgomery Holdings. His words had been irritatingly simple: separate what you know from what you suspect. The document Vanessa had found in Sebastian’s car belonged in neither column as proof. It was a lead, nothing more. Her father’s recognition of its format did not authenticate it. Adrian’s interest in the old waterfront project did not make him guilty of anything. And Sebastian’s hesitation did not prove what she feared.Arabella stared at the page, then pushed it away. She was tired of thinking about all three of them. Her phone lit up with a message from Vanessa. Are you still at the office? I could bring you something to eat.Arabella typed a quick reply that she was leaving soon, then gathered her things. She had barely reached the lobby when the receptionist called after her.“Miss Montgomery? Mr Knight left this for you.”A slim folder rested on the counter.Arabella stopped. “What is it?”“He said it was the c
