That afternoon, Ashley couldn't even look her parents in the face.

The atmosphere between them became even more tense after Ashley went back inside, when she told them that Josh suddenly couldn't make it.

“So, he's not coming anymore?” Ashley’s mother asked while stirring the soup that was already halfway in her small bowl.

"Yes. But it's not just because of his will. Suddenly there are a lot of urgent things he needs to get done for the launch of his project."

Even when Ashley tried to convince her parents that Josh sounded really sorry for not being able to come and that what was preventing him was really office business that couldn't be left unattended, her mother's face just looked even more disgusted.

Ashley was terrified that her lie would be caught, so she continued to earnestly try to tell all sorts of other lies, whatever came to mind, just to convince and lessen her parents' annoyance.

"That's twice already. How many more times do I have to tolerate his disrespectful behavior? Yesterday he underestimated my invitation, now he makes promises but doesn't keep them," Ashley’s mother continued, her voice rising slightly. “And you still defend him?”

Ashley looked down. She knew that whatever she said now would only trigger more anger.

"You said he had some urgent business yesterday. But it turned out to be—something with her cousin, huh?" This time, Ashley's mother's tone sounded more sarcastic. The woman’s breath was harshly sniffed. “I was so upset yesterday that I forgot to ask what was so urgent that he had to do with his cousin to refuse my request.”

Ashley's father grumbled as he put down his spoon roughly. "The Lim family is strange. On the outside it looks clean, polite, and full of prestige. But for some reason, there are always bad rumors about them spread internally."

Her father took a sip of the warm tea in his cup. Then he continued talking.

"If it was just a rumor or two, it might be true. But this has been going on for a long time. So there are two possibilities—either it's really just a rumor... or, they have strong connections with the media to always clear their name," Ashley’s father replied sharply. “And we all know, the second possibility makes more sense.”

“No matter how powerful they are, they're still far below us.” Ashley's mother replied with sarcasm.

Ashley sighed. She knew it wouldn't be that easy to put out the fire that was already burning in her parents' heads.

Ashley’s mother pulled the napkin from her lap, and threw it irritably on the table. Indicating that she was not going to continue with her lunch.

“I'll talk to Josh's mother directly,” she said firmly. "I want to know what his cousin's interests are. At the same time, I'm going to shame her for her son's lack of respect for our family."

Ashley jumped. Her eyes rounded in panic. If her mother asked Josh's mother, then the scandal that she had tried to help cover up would be immediately exposed by both parties—her mother, as well as Josh's mother.

"No, Mom! There's no need to bother like that. I'll ask Josh directly."

Her mother gave her a sharp, probing look.

"We shouldn't provoke my mother-in-law like that. I'll try to talk to Josh again to arrange another meeting to apologize to you both," Ashley replied quickly. "Besides, he couldn't make it this afternoon because he had an important meeting. He's been talking to me a lot about the launch of his new project. And I know today is the peak. He's been trying to make time, but there's still so much to do at the office."

His mother nodded slowly. Not entirely trusting, but wise enough not to argue about work.

“I'm not talking about the office,” she said finally. "I'm talking about the girl from yesterday. Mrs. Go says you don't even know who she is, do you?"

Ashley bit her lower lip. She nodded slowly. "Josh explained it to me last night. Suddenly his cousin needed help."

“Are you sure that girl is his cousin?”

Ashley's throat dried up instantly. She swallowed with difficulty. "Yes, Mom. Josh also showed me pictures of the girl with her extended family when they were kids and teenagers when I asked him to. So there's nothing to suspect. That cousin of hers is indeed part of their extended family. I believe it."

“Then how come he didn't tell you beforehand that he was meeting his cousin?”

Ashley was silent for a moment. Preparing another lie.

"Josh was too busy. And yesterday's business was too sudden. So he didn't have time to tell me, and everything just happened. Yesterday's incident might have looked bad, but it actually happened because of the wrong coincidences. It just so happened that Josh hadn't told me that he was going to help his cousin. It also happened that we all met them when they were taking a break for lunch. That's all."

"Coincidence, coincidence. Everything is always a coincidence," Ashley’s father sneered. "And you just believe it? This whole thing sounds odd to my ears."

Ashley nodded again. But this time with a noticeable bitterness.

Her mother shook her head, disappointed. "Don't you know what business Josh had to help you with yesterday? Didn't you ask?"

Ashley was getting confused. She wasn't prepared to answer that.

"I... I was too tired yesterday. So I fell asleep before I thought to ask further. I had already forgotten about it this morning," she said softly. Her voice was barely audible.

“Are you stupid or just ignorant?” Ashley’s mother snapped. "You're a wife, but you don't even pay attention to your own husband. Do you think you can live in this household ignorantly? Look at it now. We were lied to. You were lied to. And you're doing nothing about it."

“He's not lying, Mom.”

“You're just like that woman,” the words came out like a whip. "Fool, destroyer, troublemaker. Blood is thicker than water. You can't hide where you were born." Her mother quipped sarcastically.

Ashley tried to hold back her tears. But her mother didn't stop.

But his father immediately pounding the table with his hands. The man was sometimes a strong alliance with his mother to mentally torture her, but somehow there was an ego flinch whenever that woman brought up blood and heredity.

Maybe, just maybe. Because there was actually the same blood flowing in her and her father.

Ashley gripped her hand tightly. Too tightly, until her nails dug into her own palms. Her face was bright red. But she couldn't cry in front of them.

She wanted to defend herself. She wanted to shout that none of this was her fault. That she herself was also a victim who was sacrificed by everyone. But she was tongue-tied. There was no strength left in her to speak anymore.

"That's enough. I can't eat under these circumstances," her father said coldly. He stood up and straightened his suit. “I'm sick of everything I hear.”

Ashley's mother also stood up following her husband's actions.

Ashley also stood up. She wanted to escort them to the door. But her father held up a hand, refusing her.

"No need. We can go out on our own."

They left. The door closed with a loud bang. Leaving Ashley alone in the dining room.

Ashley stood still for a while before her body faltered. She sat back in her chair, holding her face with both hands. The tears she had been holding back finally broke out. Her chest also hurt and felt very tight.

She didn't know who to blame for everything that had happened to her so far.

The greed of his mother and father? Josh's madness? Or was she herself that willingly caught up in all these people's games and unable to help herself?

She was so tired of living in a household filled with secrets. Tired of defending someone who didn't even care about her in the slightest. Tired of being a useless shield in the middle of two families that both had no conscience.

Ashley hugged her own body. Crying like a child who only has herself as a protector.

“Ashley, cous,” she heard the greeting as her glass was clinked by another champagne glass. Her head turned toward the source of the voice. And her eyes caught a familiar figure she last saw around five years ago—as a surprise guest at her home in New Zealand. That girl had arrived in pieces then, heartbroken and a mess, if memory served her right. And her following days had been forcibly filled with listening to the girl's non-stop cry. The corners of Ashley's lips were drawn wide without realizing it. She warmly embraced the eccentric girl standing before her. Dressed in a bright yellow babydoll dress paired with a hot pink blazer, fifteen-centimeter heels of the same color, and an array of piercings sparkling on her face and ears. Sera Song, her cousin. Who had a similar fate to her, though their circumstances weren’t entirely the same. The one person in their family who could be just as annoyingly stubborn as she was. And yet, ironically, the only family member who always both

Ashley stopped and looked around, searching for a spot that could conceal her completely while still letting her hear their conversation. To her left, about three to four steps away from where Josh was, stood a large pillar. Ashley very carefully walked on tiptoe and hid behind it.“You mean I can't see you?” The girl's voice sounded raised. “You said you wouldn't leave me. But what? Look. What I was afraid of actually happened, right? All your words turned out to be a bunch of bullshit, huh, Josh?”“No, no. That's not what I meant. If they see you—” Josh paused for a moment. Instead of finishing his sentence, he remained silent for a long time.Ashley's neck spontaneously stretched longer, thinking her ears couldn't pick up their voices. But no matter how hard she focused her hearing, not a single sound could be heard.Even so, Ashley remained still, waiting like a statue. She even breathed in and out very slowly.“I was just afraid you'd get hurt,” Josh's voice reappeared. At this m

The look on Ashley's face was a complete mess. Something inside her head was boiling, and her chest felt like it was being beaten from within. Creating an agonizing sensation of pain. She was angry.Very angry, and hurt. She couldn't even bear to imagine what she looked like now. Because even without seeing her reflection, she could guess how messy and pathetic she looked.Ashley slowly tried to stand up. Fixing the top of her dress and brushing off the dust floor on her dress. As for her disheveled hair, she ran her fingers through it, ruffling and combing as best she could do.Only when she felt that her hair no longer stuck out too much, she stepped out from behind the partition. She avoided making eye contact with whoever it was and moved quickly to the elevator. This time, luck seemed to be on her side. No one else got into the elevator with her. And the hallway on the floor where her room was located was also empty. The first thing she did after making it into the room was run s

“You want us both to sleep in the same room? Here?” Ashley stared at Josh with an incredulous look in her eyes, as if the man had just uttered some nonsensical words. “Yes.” “You have a girlfriend. You said she's the only one you love,” Ashley tried to restate their situation as clearly as possible, ”But still you want to sleep in the same room with me?” And once again further emphasized her question. “Yes.” “Wow,” Ashley unconsciously shook her head and widened her eyes in disbelief at what she had just heard. She completely failed to understand the man's train of thought. She had no idea what he was planning, but at this moment, Ashley felt played. “I don't understand. But I still want to move.” Not wanting to comply with Josh's unreasonable demand, Ashley reached her hand into the closet next to him again. But once again, Josh prevented her from reaching the clothes. But the difference was, this time, his grip was tighter and more painful. “I’m not repeating myself. Just do

Ashley's forehead creased into a deep frown. The moment the man approached with a white box, she immediately scrambled off the bed and back away. Giving as much distance as possible until her back hit the closet. Until there was no more room for her to run.Her body stiffened, her posture was now rigid—showing a very defensive position. The turmoil of anger still filled her chest, pressing against her ribs, and threatening to explode. Mixed with a variety of inexplicable feelings, and also a sense of... fear? She couldn’t explain the faint, ghostly shiver that swept over her at this moment. Which made her palms wet in cold sweat and clasping tightly without her even realizing it.It didn’t make sense. Wrath suited her current state far better than this unreasonable fear. After calming down enough to regain her composure, Ashley slowly opened her eyes. Her hand reached out for the bath glove. This time, she rubbed her entire body gently—not filled with anger like a moment ago. After all, her face still felt a bit burned, and the scratch marks on her skin stung every time they were exposed to soap.Normally, the source of her suffering came from one thing only—her family. Outside of that, her life for the past twenty-five years had gone pretty well. So she hadn't expected to encounter misfortune at the hands of a pair of ignorant lovers. The girl had scratched her face the first day they met, while the man had smeared insults on her—pride and also face.Ashley clicked her tongue, a bitter taste still settling in her mouth. Ashley spoke passionately, but her voice caught in her throat, suddenly dry and tight, cutting off her words. And because it was uncomfortable, she was busy clearing her throat.Josh watched her patiently. When she fell silent, struggling to continue, he finally spoke.“I just don’t want any more misunderstandings between us. And,” he sighed, “I don’t like being seen as a jerk. I'm also sorry for not telling you about my relationship. But clearly, I didn't lie.”"You didn't lie? How can you say that after what I saw?""I never said I was single. You never asked either, did you? So technically, I didn't lie."Ashley looked at him with a scornful glare. Unbelievable. This man could twist words and manipulate situations so smoothly, so cunningly.“I didn’t even know whether you were single or had a boyfriend,” Josh narrowed his eyes, locking his gaze onto Ashley's. So he put his phone down.“Oh really?” her tone is still the same.Josh sighed, rubbing his temple. “I’m listening, Ashley. You were explaining why you suddenly want a divorce when you've never thought about it before.”“Yes. Huh—no, no,” Ashley hurriedly corrected herself. “Who said I just thought of it now? Of course, I’ve thought about it. Who in their right mind would want to be stuck forever in a fake, business marriage like this?”Josh raised an eyebrow. Pretend, but not fake," Sharon tried to emphasize her most important point. “So, I'm going to really cut myself, but not so deep that I can't actually die.” she automatically demonstrated the motion of slicing her wrist with the knife she was holding. "That's why I need you here. You're in charge of taking me straight to the hospital as soon as I cut myself so that I can get medical attention quickly. After that, you also have to tell Josh that I'm in serious condition. Since he won't pick up my calls at all, you'll have to send word through his office phone. How?" Sharon walked back and forth in her spacious living room with her cell phone held firmly in her hand. Occasionally, she frowned as she checked her silent cell phone. Then she walked back and forth again around the room. Checking the time of day, pacing again while seemingly deep in thought, and checking her cell phone again for the umpteenth time. But her messages and incoming calls remained the same as before. There was absolutely nothing new.Worst of all, her face would grow a thousand times more sour every time her outgoing calls went unanswered, and none of her messages were read by the recipient—Josh.“Wow, this is funny,” Somun, who was sitting casually with his legs crossed, was confused by Sharon's behavior. His neck was stiff because he had fallen asleep on the short sofa in his office, so his head bent uncomfortably.“Are you staying here, Sir?” Mr. Jung looked surprised from the expression on his face. "Today we have a morning meeting with all the divisions.” The man immediately recited Josh's schedule report—as if it was automatic because it had become a habit in doing his work. “Are you going home first to get ready? At that moment, Sharon was sitting on the edge of the bed looking at him with a panicked look in her eyes. She was only wearing an inner blouse with the outer—she had been wearing when she met Josh this afternoon—lying by the door, near Josh's feet. And there was no denying that Sharon's hair was a mess. Other than that, Josh couldn't afford to wander any further to check what else was wrong in the room.Even when he saw the silhouette of another man leaning against the window while busy putting on his shirt, Josh averted his eyes and turned away. He walked with very heavy and unsteady footsteps and sat down on the sofa in the living room.Sharon, with panic filling her whole being, glared at that man while whispering to him to tidy up quickly and get out.Her hands haphazardly adjusted all her clothes, brushed her hair casually, and wiped her lips carelessly. After a heated argument and Josh's yelling which turned out to be quite traumatizing for Ashley, they didn't speak to each other at all. The short drive to the hospital felt like an uncomfortably long one. The air in their car was cold, but what Josh and Ashley felt was stuffy and claustrophobic. But after all, they were two adults who needed to take responsibility and control their behavior. They both knew they had to calm their hearts and cool their heads in front of Ashley's mother and her business partner later. Because if they were to clearly show the atmosphere of their quarrel in front of others, it would only invite more problems—Ashley's mother would become even more suspicious of Josh, and what if she found out what Josh had done? He, and his family, would be finished right then and there. And it all happened just because of his carelessness. This, for Josh, was like a vicious circle that was increasingly entangling him.
