Chapter 2

Penulis: Summer
Dante and I had rented this forty-square-meter apartment right after we started dating.

After graduation, I wanted a better-paying job, but on my tight budget, I could only afford a tiny, suffocating room deep in the industrial slums. Dante hated it.

He complained the neighborhood was a dump and the commute was too long. He flat out said the awful environment ruined his mood whenever he wanted to have sex, so he insisted we move in together.

To pay my half of the rent in this expensive city, I worked a brutal second job, sacrificing all my sleep and free time. Now, he was turning our five years together into a cheap scam, acting like I was the one ripping him off.

"Dante... after five years, what did you actually take me for?"

My tears fell out of pure self-pity. Five years of my youth, completely wasted on a monster.

Seeing my tears, the hand holding the phone in my face twitched, and he slowly pulled it back. "I was just joking. At worst, we can just..."

Before he could finish, Nadia chimed in with a theatrical sigh of disdain.

"And she still claims she isn't a gold-digger. Dante, if it weren't for you, could a girl like her ever live here? You should definitely end the lease next month. Or at least make her sign a promissory note. That’s only fair."

If it weren't for the law, I would have slapped them both raw. But I knew if I did, they would probably extort me for damages.

Five years. I was done playing their twisted games.

"I’m not signing anything. If you want money, sue me. Let’s see if a judge actually rules in your favor," I said coldly. "And I’m leaving tonight. Miss Nadia, since you want to crash here so badly, make sure you pay Dante your share. Otherwise, you’re the parasite."

The moment I turned to leave, Dante lunged forward and locked his grip around my wrist. His arrogant smirk vanished, replaced by a dark, controlling anger.

"Elena, cut the crap. Nadia and I were just messing around," he growled. "Think carefully. If you walk out that door, you will lose me forever."

I realized then how horribly wrong I had been.

I shouldn't have let his sweet talk sway me when I first discovered he was a billionaire mafia heir. And I shouldn't have bought into his garbage philosophy about a 'pure relationship' every time he implicitly accused me of being after his money.

I had foolishly clung to the memories of him staying up all night to take care of me when I had a high fever, gently holding me to soothe my pain. We had genuinely loved each other once. But our love could never survive being treated like a criminal investigation.

"Dante, let’s break up."

The moment the words left my mouth, his anger dissolved into a flash of genuine panic.

"Stop messing around," he stammered. "Are you really throwing away our relationship over this? You’re about to marry me and finally get my family's approval."

He had been on his pedestal for so long that he genuinely believed loving me was an act of charity.

I looked at him, my expression completely dead. "I’m not throwing a tantrum. Since you spent every waking hour convinced I was a parasite scheming for your blood money, go find a woman who actually qualifies to enter your precious family."

I ripped my wrist from his grip, turned on my heel, and went into the bedroom to pack.

A minute later, a furious roar echoed through the apartment. "Elena! You will regret this!"

I ignored him, unfazed by the sound of the front door slamming as he stormed out with Nadia.

I had endured five years of a love where I was treated like a thief. When I was at my absolute lowest, begging for just a grand to save the child in my womb, he chose to look away, all just to run his ridiculous test. That was our first child, but he didn't even know, let alone care.

At that exact moment, my love for him, and the family I thought we were building, died completely.

Julian let out a low, calm laugh, looking Dante up and down before eyeing the ring box. "A custom archival diamond? I remember you from the premium auction last month, Mr. Moretti. You and I were in a bidding war for the rare emerald raw stone used for Elena's brooch. With your family's massive wealth, you could have easily outbid me. But the moment the price went up, you folded instantly. Was it because you didn't care enough, or did you think she just wasn't worth the money?"Julian’s words shocked me. He had gone to a high-end auction just to get the emerald for my brooch?I turned my head to look at Julian, my voice a mix of surprise and confusion. "Julian, are you crazy? Spending that kind of fortune on a gift for me?"Julian looked down at me, his hand gently squeezing mine. "You are worth every single cent, Elena."At that moment, Dante’s eyes landed on my dress, staring at the brilliant green fire of the emerald brooch. That was the exact stone he had initially thought about bu

The next evening, I stood in front of my closet, looking at the elegant dresses Julian had sent over the past few weeks. I couldn't help but smile. He never cared about fashion trends or forcing me into a certain mold; he only cared about whether I felt comfortable, confident, and happy wearing them. After some thought, I chose a simple, elegant dark green silk dress. I carefully pinned the vintage platinum emerald brooch he gave me yesterday near my collarbone. The vibrant green of the stone caught the light beautifully, perfectly matching the fabric.Julian had offered to pick me up, but I gently turned him down. I wanted to arrive at the glass-house pavilion alone to give him a proper surprise and show him, in my own way, how much I appreciated his unwavering support over these past few months. What I didn't expect was running into Dante Moretti right outside the private entrance of the estate. The moment I saw his unmistakable silhouette standing under the dim courtyard lights, my

Within fifteen minutes, a steaming plate of pasta was placed gently in front of me. When I was halfway through the meal, Julian leaned back against the porch railing, a quiet smile playing on his lips."Full?"Whenever I neared my limit, my eating speed would naturally slow down. Because I deeply respected the care he put into cooking, I always tried to clear the plate, even if it meant taking slow, tiny bites."If you're full, don't force yourself," Julian said softly, reaching over to gently take the fork from my hand. "Overeating will only make you uncomfortable after your surgery."I bit my lip, breaking into a genuine laugh. "Julian, do you have some kind of telepathic link to my brain? How do you always know exactly what I'm thinking?""It’s not magic, Elena. Your heart is so beautifully honest that everything you feel is written right there on your face. It’s impossible not to notice."Beautifully honest? It was the first time in my entire life anyone had ever used those words t

That afternoon, I finally made time to visit the local clinic for my long-overdue post-surgery checkup. Ever since I arrived in this valley town, I had been working myself to the bone, entirely ignoring the doctor's previous warnings about my critical physical condition. As I sat in the waiting room, a familiar figure stepped through the clinic doors. It was Julian. He was here to drop off an agricultural water safety report for the county health inspector, but the moment his eyes landed on me sitting in the row of plastic chairs, his face filled with immediate concern. He walked straight over, bypassing his errand entirely, and sat down beside me. He didn't pry or ask invasive questions; he simply stayed by my side, quietly accompanying me through the entire examination. When the doctor gently scolded me for being severely malnourished and neglecting my recovery after the miscarriage, Julian listened with absolute seriousness, nodding along to every dietary restriction and lifestyle r

I returned to my family's old, empty house, a place that had stood silent for years. The exact instant I turned the key, unlocked the door, and stepped inside, the rigid walls I had forced myself to build completely crumbled. The silence of the house magnified my grief, and tears flooded my eyes before I could even drop my bags.I collapsed onto the old bed, curling my body tightly inward as I clutched my empty abdomen against my chest. The pain was physical, a heavy, suffocating ache that tore through me as I sobbed uncontrollably into the dark."You deserved to see the light of day, my sweet little one, and the guilt of failing to secure that surgery in time will haunt me forever.""The world was cruel to us, but my inability to protect you from their malice is a burden I will carry for the rest of my days.""Please know that you were loved from the very moment you began, even if I was too weak to shield you from the storm."My heart felt completely lacerated by the agonizing weight

For the next three days, Dante unleashed the full force of his mafia syndicate’s tracking assets, turning the city upside down to hunt me down. He placed his family’s extensive intelligence network on absolute high alert, desperate to locate the woman who had dared to vanish from his gilded cage. I knew exactly how he operated, which was precisely why I refused to sit idle and wait to be caught.Instead of hiding in fear, I dug through my old personal contacts until I found the number of my childhood best friend. She had climbed the ranks to become a top-tier corporate lawyer, completely removed from the corrupt underworld Dante commanded. With a steady hand, I typed out a direct message and sent it through WhatsApp.I watched the screen breathlessly until the two gray checkmarks rapidly turned blue. She hadn't deleted me, nor had she forgotten our bond.Leveraging our lifelong connection, we locked down a face-to-face meeting at a secluded diner within a few hours. I didn't hold bac
