She entered the run’s changeroom and went to her locker to pull out her orange outside suit, and checked it over for damage or weak spots. They had to wear them whenever they went out, it protected them from the elements, the harsh cold and unforgiving rays of light that reflected into the solar system. You could survive outside without a suit but it wasn’t pleasant. It was freezing and if you got hit by a ray of light it felt like an ice cold knife being dragged across your skin, it left a red mark too.
Jenny and Mac entered the room too. They were the other runners for this morning.
“Hey Mia” Jenny said
“Hey guys” Mia replied
“Going to set a new record this morning” Mac teased
“Nah” Said Mia “I don’t think you will be catching my old record anytime soon; I don’t want to make it even harder for you guys”
“Ha!” said Mac “don’t worry, I’ll knock your record off real soon”
“You wish Mac” Jenny said with a gentle shove to Mac’s shoulder
“Are we ready, Trainees?” Asked Master Alex, as he entered the room.“Yes Sir” Came the response from all 3 trainees.
“Good” Master Alex said as he walked around inspecting them getting ready, making sure their suits were in good condition and everything in place. He walked up to the computer, getting this morning’s run program open. “Ok, ready to sync your comms”
Mia pulled her Comm Screen out of her pocket and placed it on the sync stand. She pulled on her suit and after a beep sounded from her comm screen she removed it from the Sync stand and put it in her forearm pocket with a clear film so she could input her readings on the run. Mac and Jenny followed suit. They all put their gloves on and stood with their helmets under their arms waiting for the signal to start.
“Right, who is going first” asked Master Alex.
Jenny stepped forward, Mac fell in behind her, Mia didn’t bother to move, she had plenty of time. Jenny clipped her helmet on and walked through into the entry room as the door slid open and then closed. There was then a 5 second delay before the outside door opened and then Jenny would be off checking all the maintenance valves on the north run, there was twenty six in total. The river run had twenty eight valves and the Gorge run had Thirty two. Runners would stop at each valve check the reading against their run details they had just sync to their comm screens. They would also record that reading into her device and it would tell her what zone it was in, green, orange or red.
A reading in the orange zone would need pressure released via a big round tap that needed to be unscrewed to release pressure, a reading in the red zone would trigger an alarm in the maintenance headquarters and another team would get ready to come out in case there was a problem releasing the pressure. The more pressure behind the taps the harder they are to move. The program also showed valves that were irregular in their readings, that might also mean trouble.
While Mac was going through the doors, Mia put the ends of her eleclace into her ears, opened up her play list. Just before she clipped on her helmet Master Alex said “Happy Hunting” Mia gave a smile and it was now her turn to go through the doors.
Mia loved this run the most, it was named after a huge gorge that you had to climb up and back down at different parts, plus there was part where you had to make a 2meter jump over a huge cavern that was at least 50 meters deep. It was exhilarating. The landscape was dry and rocky, it looked kind of like desert but was freezing cold not scorching hot. There was almost no plant life and a few animals, mainly of the small scuttling kind, but it was extremely rare to see anything on a run.
Mia was half way through the run that should take her about three hours when she came to the first orange valve that would need to be released. She turned the tap one way watching the reading drop until it was back in the green, then she turned the tap the opposite way to turn it off, she typed the new reading into her comm screen and checked the reading was stable before heading off again – the next bit was a steep climb up the gorge, she scaled it easily, hands and feet finding the best places without her even thinking. On top of the ridge was an easy run checking the next three valves then she used a rope & pully that were already there to abseil down the gorge face. She then followed the well-worn track checking valves as she went. The big jump was coming up, it was only marked with a sign. She accelerated a little and lengthened her stride slightly sailed over the cavern. She always tried to looked down – just for the thrill. The rest of the run had only one other valve that needed adjusting. She continued on the track that would take her directly back to base. That was a good run only two valves were out. She didn’t stop running until she was at the entry room and had hit the opening button. She was a little out of breath because she had pushed herself on the run back.
Bending over to catch her breath, she heard someone coming up behind her. “Hey . . . Mac” she said trying to catch her breath “maybe you really will catch my record”
“Hell yeah” Mac replied equally out of breath.
“Did you have a good run?”
“Yeah only one orange, you?” Mac asked
“two”
The door opened and they both moved through. Once the outside door was shut they clipped off their helmets and walked to the next door that opened as if on que. There was no one in the change room but that was normal, the Master would be checking on their progress as they put their readings in. They would already know their runs were successful.
They stripped off their suits, and put them in the wash pile. By the time they were rostered on for their next run their suits would be ready again in their lockers. “Time for a shower” announced Mia
“Wanna share?” Mac offered
“Nice try but sadly no!” Mia said
Just then Jenny entered the room from her run.
“Hey how’d you go” Mia asked
“Six oranges, that’s the most I think I have ever had,” said Jenny
“Yeah wow, that is a lot,” said Mia
With a cheeky look Mac cut in “Hey we’re just going for a shower, wanna join?”
Mia gave Jenny a, just ignore him look and exited the room.
“Hey wait up” called Mac with a chuckle.
Captain Jay’s mind was racing, making lists of all the things he needed to get done, he needed a team to protect Princess Rota and a team to go and find the missing princess, He needed his core team now. He pulled our his comm screen and send a group message to his core team to meet him at Princess Rota’s apartments. His core team were the people he had trained from the start. He had other guards beneath him but they were transfers from other squads or new recruits that he hadn’t had time to asse yet. No he would only use the people he knew for now because there was the possibility of it being an inside job.Beeves & Boris were the first to show up, they were already on their way before they got Jay’s message. They had a case with them which jay took and put on the kitchen bench, he would explain that later. Next to arrive was Benny, his second in command, Then Kat and Tilly. Once they were all together Captain Jay introduced everyone.&ldqu
Captain Jay’s call to his superior went off without a hitch, Kat was authorised to watch the princess and they had permission to follow up on the lead but he would need a spaceship, and a crew who he could trust. He thought for a minute and then he smiled, Bunny, she owes me a big favour and she would make this mission fun. He found her on his comm screen, and clicked on her line.“Hey bunny”A loud cheery female voice was on the other end “Oh hey Jay, you remember how to get in touch with me now”“Nope, I remembered you own me a favour, a big fat favour and I’m calling it in”“Oh gosh” There was scoffing laugh on the other end of the line “I forgot you really are the most direct person I ever knew. What . . . could you possibly ever want from me?“A spaceship that I can borrow for 1 week, without anyone asking questions, and maybe a couple of trusted crew members”
Mia had a Planet History class after her morning run & shower with Master Alex. It would be in room 2a. She was a little early so decided to go via the mess hall and help herself to a choc custard. She only allowed herself to have a little a week because she loved them so much and unchecked this addiction could ruin her figure. She had a classic hourglass figure, or she had been told by one of the girls that read all the rich people gossip news, that she had absolutely no interest in. She had left her thick wavy hair out because it was still drying from the shower but now it was starting to annoy her so she chucked it up in a piggy tail and headed for class.Master Alex was in the room waiting, so was Mac and the other trainees, just Jenny was missing.“Trainee’s get your comm’s out and open the document Planet Guizer History and start reading until you get to chapter 5.”There was a collective groan, Mia didn’t actually know mu
At the unloading dock the younger trainees where already starting to carry the smaller parcels inside to put in the mess hall, the older trainees would use the trolleys and move the bigger supplies, that were in metal shipping crates. There were about 20 crates to unload and then empty crates that were delivered last month were loaded abord. The whole process took about two hours. Most of the trainees then wondered back in via the mess hall to check for their parcels they ordered. This was the most exciting time on Planet S610.There wouldn’t be any other classes for the rest of the day so Mia found her parcels and went to her room to try them on. She tried on the cargo pants, they fit her alright although they clung to her legs and were a lot tighter than she imagined they should be, but they felt nice on, the material was stretchy and they moved with her. She then tried her new boots on. Perfect fit. Just as well, normally in the past she would have traded with
Captain jay threw his duffel bag into the boot of his car as it pulled up at the water gate, two mins early. He then removed his pack from his back and climbed into the back seat, putting the pack at his feet.“We leave from the Military Port”“Ok” Benny said, as he eased the car back onto the traffic.“You will need to get your credentials up on your comms for the checkpoint,” said Jay.It was a quiet drive to the port, traffic wasn’t too bad and they made great time. When they pulled the car up out the front of the workshop near the port, Bunny was there waiting for them, she wrapped Captain Jay into a big hug, shocking Kat and Benny.“Come on, grab your stuff – this way.” said BunnyJays team grabbed their bags, packs and Tilly had a case Jay supposed she had filled with explosives. They followed Bunny into the ship she had commandeered. They got a quick tour and met
Day 2The next morning Kat was greeted by Beeves and Boris in the Princesses apartments. Kat had done the night shift and they were to watch the Princess during the day while Kat got some sleep. The Princess was going to visit her Father this morning and all three of them would go as her protection. News had finally come in late last night that her father was out of surgery, but wasn’t out of the woods yet. His recovery would take months if he were to pull through. It had already been arranged that the Princess would go and see her Father at 9.20 this morning. Shimel had greeted Kat with a coffee and she had just finished it when the boys arrived.Boris greeted Kat with “Oh gosh Kat, you look like . .”“I don’t want to hear it” Kat cut in, just to let the boys know she was still sharp, despite how she must look.“Morning” the women both welcomed. The boys now just a bit wary of them, blushed a bit.
They were almost finished their lunch when the surveillance system chimed. Immediately, the boys, got up. Beeves went to see the feeds and Boris to the front door. “Someone is coming to your door,” said Beeves, he picked up the device and held it out to Rota so she could identify the person.“Oh No,” said Rota “Its my Uncle Octave, My Fathers brother. Oh I didn’t expect him here for at least another two days. He normally drags his feet when coming here.”“Did you want us to turn him away?” asked BeevesThere was a knock on the door.“I would like that but no its better to just get this over and done with”Shimel got up at once and took all their unfinished plates from the table “Uncle Octave won’t think it proper, the help eating with a Princess” she said in a mocking tone and put them in the butlers pantry. She then hurried down the hall closing all the doors.
Kat awoke at 5pm after a restful sleep. Oh how she needed that. She checked her comm, there were a couple of messages but none urgent. So she ordered some dinner to be sent over and hit the shower while she waited. Refreshed, dressed and hot meal in front of her she decided to check her messages. There was one from Boris about Rota being visited by her uncle Octave, who was by all accounts trying to get Rota to step away from the crown so he could rule while her Father recovered. He also mentioned his reaction to Lacy’s comment about him next in line to the throne if anything happened to her. Octave also carried an ornate knife on his lower left leg, which had blood on it. There were photos of the knife too. It was swabbed and will be sent to the lab. There was a couple of replies and thoughts on the note she had put up about the trajectory of the Kings shooter. Then she came across a message from her superior giving her a heads up about Octave’s request fo
