2.
He felt his body hair prickling as he stared at the child she was holding out. It was the first of its kind since his reign as a King. He looked at Belena again. "My child?" He asked and she nodded."No man has touched me except you, Your Highness" she cried. King Godric was reaching his hand out to the infant to carry. "She is your child." Belena sobbed.
"It's a female child?" He asked. Belena was disappointed to see that the hand waiting to carry her withdrew back to his pocket.
"Please hold her" she begged him, her teeth jittering.
Godric walked past her to his shelf and went to take his ornate pipe where he smoked tobacco in, and puffed the fume toward her. "Why are you here, Belena?" He asked. "Where is my male child?"
"You said you didn't mind what type of child." While trying her best not to make her voice shake, it only worsened. "You said you loved me either way."
"I did." He smiled. "But you left."
"Because…because the Queen found out I was pregnant and I… could…not explain how that came about."
"And so I ask you, why are you here, now?"
"I have no place to stay, no food to eat, no clothes to wear. You promised to fulfill all my desires if I bear a child for you. You promised to protect me Godric" Belena could glimpse flashbacks of her intimate moments with the king in his room, where he had confessed his undying love for her, where he had told her he didn't care if she was a maid, but he would always be there for her.
Belena continued. "I do not want a position as a Queen. I only want my child to be taken care of."
Godric chuckled. "Well that's easy," he said and Belena sighed in relief. "But not at this time." He sat down on his well-furnished bed, puffing his smoke. "You've come at the wrong time. I am too occupied with trivial matters to bother about what you will eat or where you will stay…"
"Just one word from you, Godric and it is done. You do not have to perform anything"
He sighed. "You do not understand. There is a war that is…"
"There is war?"
"Yes. And the news of your child would only bring more chaos to the palace. We do not need that at the moment. If it were a male child, perhaps it would have been overlooked."
"What war?" She panicked. "You are making me more scared. Is my child safe? What war?"
He walked toward her and held her shoulders tightly. "I'll do you a favor, Belena. I'll keep to my promise. Come back here tomorrow when the war begins and I shall protect you and your child."
"Where? Where can I stay?"
"You know the palace like the back of your hand. You will figure things out."
"Godric…"
"It's Your Highness to you" he snapped. "The chances of calling me by name are gone. The only relation we have Belena-" he moved his lips close to her ear. "It is to protect you from the gut-wrenching war that is about to happen." He laughed, almost manically. "Once that is done…you stay far away from the palace like you did before."
Belena staggered when he let go of her shoulders. His eyes…they weren't like how she remembered them. And what war could he possibly be speaking about?
"You'll protect me?" She asked again. "If I am back here tomorrow, would you protect me as promised?"
Godric walked back to his desk where he was writing. "A promise is a debt, Belena, and I do not like to owe."
She swallowed, finally feeling confident after a long time. This was good. She could tell her mother who owned the child after the war Godric spoke about. She could resume working in the palace and not be a shame to the town.
"Thank…you." She said, cuddling her baby back to her body and tying the child tightly with the shawl. "I'll rest now" she muttered and carefully left the King's room.
Belena walked back, just the way she came, but instead of going home, she headed to the storage room behind all of the palace rooms, far from the Queen's room.
She entered and cleared a spot for her child, taking the basket, and fabrics she found in the room, and set a padded surface for her baby to lie on.
"What do I name you?" She muttered as she stared at the beautiful girl she had made. After a long stare, she decided to wait until Godric named her. Belena found a cushion where she could rest her head on and in no time, she was fast asleep.
She woke up at the mere sound of her child's sob and fed her consistently. Even at midnight where it was as silent as a graveyard, she ensured she did all she could so the child's cry didn't wake anyone up.
When Belena started to get good sleep after being drained from breastfeeding without food, she heard noises. The noise was distant at first but then it started getting closer.
"GET EVERYONE OF THEM!" The loud growl of a man terrified her. She gently carried her baby and climbed a shelf so she could peep from the window to see what was happening.
"The wolves?" She mumbled as her eyes caught sight of the wolf King ordering his men into the palace. "The war" she muttered again, remembering what Godric had told her earlier. "The war" Fear filled her voice again.
"DO NOT LEAVE ANYONE UNHARMED!" The voice of the wolf King came again and an arrow followed, piercing into the window where Belena was peeking from, slightly brushing past her eye.
Belena quickly rushed down from where she was climbing.
She needed to run. To run to Godric. He was the only one who could help her and her child now.
5. The wolves had taken their stands outside the palace shooting arrows everywhere. Belena needed to run to Godric for safety as he had promised to protect her. She took off with her child out of the storage room.Everyone had begun to run helter-skelter after being alerted about the danger. Belena ran across the palace halls into King Godric's room and shut the door."The war!" She panted, holding her chest. "It had begun." Her eyes darted around the room to see the prying gaze on her. "I..I am sorry, for barging in Your Highness" she buried her head. "Belena. Queen's maid?" The man standing beside the King said. Belena looked up at him, he was the Queen's royal guard. His eyes pierced into hers in shock. "How did you get into the palace?" He took a defensive stance, protecting the King."The war has started." She said. "The wolves are attacking. Please protect my child" she turned to Godric, fell on her knees wanting to move closer to him but was stopped by the guard."Stay away f
4.All the wolves who were of age to fight gathered in front of Ragnar's palace. "The humans have betrayed us. They have killed some of us. They want a war and we would give them that. Spare no one, we are barraging the palace first.""Yes, Alpha!" The wolves chorused."Let us show them that our kindness was a privilege. They have silver, but we have our inner beast. Unleash your wolf on whoever crosses your path""Yes, Alpha!" They chorused.Ragnar went back into the house to find his wife. He saw her picking an arrow from its case. "What are you doing?""Fighting with you." She said, without looking at him, and continued to store more arrows in the quiver around her waist."Nonsense!" Ragnar spat, going to her and removing all of the arrows with her. "Did you forget? Today is the birth date. You would not fight in this condition""I cannot just watch. I have to protect the palace while you're gone. I have to protect the other women who have stayed back…""It's not your place to do
3. THE WOLVES"Thank you, my Alpha" Philipa took a bow in front of her spouse, her very own Ragnar, the King of the Wolves. "I cannot explain the delight that is bubbling in me" She walked to his bed.Alpha Ragnar's smile spread to his cheeks as Philipa approached him. He felt the same bubbling when she was near him. She came close to him and he stood up and acknowledged her. "All I do, my Queen is my expression of love for you.""No. This…this is too much" Phillipa responded. "There has been a feast outside the palace for the past three days…""And it would continue until you birth this bundle of joy" Alpha Ragnar rubbed Philipa's belly which was as big as a ripe melon. "Tomorrow is your birth date and when that child comes, the whole town will not get enough of my celebration" he laughed and Philipa joined him. "I will be sending the invitation to all humans too, tonight. They have to celebrate with us"Philipa's smile fell when he said that and Ragnar noticed. "The humans?" She ask

1. THE HUMANS "Push!" Her mother screamed at her. "If you don't push this baby out now, I am leaving you alone to this" It was storming outside and the thunder terrified Belena as she lay on a wool mattress, legs spread, knees buckled and the wooden bed frame creaking to every move she made.Belena felt like she was being ripped apart. She felt like a stray cat was clawing her intestines to find food. "Mother, please. Easy on me." She cried. The windows in the room opened and closed due to the wind effect and the roof rattled like it was about to pull off. "Almost. Keep on pushing" the mother shouted, trying to talk over the noise of the rain."Mother…" Belena cried, tears pouring out of her eyes in a triple stream. Yet, she continued pushing, she wanted to bear this child. "I see the head!" Her mother said. "Gently now, Bel, don't push much." She gently guided the head out carefully and the rest of the baby's body followed. As the mother held the newborn, she took a clean clo
