LOGINAriana wished she could believe she was imagining it—the faint sound of stone against stone. But for some reason, her skin prickled, and her heart raced painfully in her chest.
“Is someone there?” she found herself whispering.
Nobody answered.
She hovered inches from the wall, peering at the tiny cracks in the masonry. She couldn’t see anything. Just as she was about to touch the surface, the air in the room dropped cold.
Before she could blink, a cloaked shadow burst from the wall. A strong hand grabbed her neck and slammed her against the wall by the window.
She gasped; pain shot through her back, but that one didn’t seem important as she couldn’t breathe.
Not again, she thought. She struggled and tried to claw at her captor, but her fingers slipped right through the smoky shadow.
The grip tightened. She couldn’t scream. Darkness began dancing in her vision. Then the shadow leaned closer, and a raspy voice spoke with a hiss.
“You didn't do what we told you. The princess is still alive and that’s a great failure for you.”
Princess? What are they talking about? Ariana panicked, but she couldn’t say it.
“So you must pay for this failure with blood.” The shadow started pulling her towards the open area in the wall by her neck.
Desperate to break free, Ariana kicked out a leg. Her foot struck the wooden stool beside the table, sending it crashing to the floor with a bang.
The shadow growled.
At once, footsteps came rushing. The lock clicked and the door burst open. Captain Kaleb entered the room, annoyance clear on his face, his hand resting on his sword.
“What is it n—“ He stopped, eyes widened. The shadow veered at him and it was pure swirling darkness staring back at him in the cloak. Kaleb snapped into action instantly.
Drawing his sword, he rushed towards it. The cloaked shadow freed Ariana, melted into the wall, and the space shut tight in an instant. Kaleb hit the wall in frustration.
“What the blazes was that?”
Ariana was on the floor, trembling. She coughed fiercely and struggled to breathe. Her hand went to her throat while tears flowed from her eyes. Dark bruises could be seen already rising on her skin.
Kaleb loomed over her. “Answer me, what was that shadowy thing?”
Ariana coughed again, holding her throat as she glared at him. “I don’t know, okay? It appeared probably a minute after you left.”
“Then why was it trying to kill you?”
“I don’t know!” she shouted, and rejected it immediately as pain flared in her throat. “All I know is that it came out of the wall and tried to kill me.”
Kaleb went to where the shadow had vanished and touched the cool surface with his fingers. “But that shouldn’t be. It’s impossible to use magic in the palace.”
Ariana leant against the table leg, fighting to steady her laboured breath. The shadow words kept echoing in her head. The Princess is still alive, and you must pay for this failure with your blood.
A scary realisation hit her. Elena—the girl whose body she’s in—might have been part of a treacherous plot she had no idea about. Someone hired Elena to end the princess. But then the maid's body became Ariana's when she woke up, so the job was never finished.
Which meant the girl living Ariana's life as the princess was in unforeseen danger.
At first, Ariana didn’t care about the spoiled girl who had ordered her whipped. She just wanted to get her life back. But now, she must care.
'Cause if that girl dies, I die as the princess. And if I die here as Elena, I'll never get my real life back.
Her entire future hangs on this hidden conspiracy.
Kaleb moved toward the door. Ariana called out with a croak. “Wait, please don't tell me you're leaving me alone here again?”
Kaleb glanced at her. "You need protection, and I need to report this suspicious…event.” He stepped into the passageway and called out, "Guards, get in here!"
Two guards hurried in.
"Watch her," Kaleb commanded. "Nobody enters. Nobody speaks to her. If anything unusual happens, raise the alarm immediately."
"Yes, Captain," the guards responded.
Ariana pulled her knees to her chest. Although she felt a bit safer with the guards here, her mind was still in deep unrest. After all, she was trapped in a place where she was all alone, and it seemed that her life might even be at risk.
Briskly, Kaleb walked towards the throne room. Reaching the grand doors, the guards opened them for him, and he entered, shutting them behind him.
Inside, King Myde and the Princess sat on their respective thrones in the room. Their expressions were grave.
“Captain Kaleb, any news of the whereabouts of the seal or the criminal who stole it?” King Myde asked.
The Captain knelt. “No, Your Majesty.”
“Then why are you here?” The King’s tone was a touch hostile.
“Something happened to the servant girl: Elena.”
The Princess's smile was brittle. “You mean the stupid, deluded maid who was claiming to be me?”
King Myde frowned. “Did she have anything to do with the missing seal?”
“She might be connected, but that's not all. Someone—or something—just tried to kill her when I left her in the interrogation room.”
"Explain," King Myde ordered.
Kaleb did that.
"Impossible," the Princess flatly intoned. “Father had unknown magic blocked from working within the palace. Are you sure you saw it correctly, Captain?”
“Yes, Your Highness. I swear on my life.”
“So, someone dares to use magic in my palace without my consent?” King Myde’s expression was thunderous.
“Father, do you actually believe that? Even if it's true, what if the girl staged it to get rid of the suspicion on her?”
"I’m not so sure, Your Highness," Captain Kaleb firmly said. "I think the person who took the seal might be trying to silence her permanently. If she’s truly involved in the theft, we need to keep her alive even more. She could have noticed or learned something, even if she insists she doesn’t remember anything about herself. Also, she knows some things she shouldn't know. If she dies, we might lose our only lead.”
The King considered this, his brow furrowed. "Those words she's saying, claiming to be the princess... could she be under a magic spell?"
"It is a possibility," Kaleb admitted. "But someone wants her dead, which means she is important. We need to keep her safe."
King Myde was silent for a bit, then raised his hand. "Get and bring her here. I want to ask her some questions myself.”
A guard stood outside.Ariana sat in the tent, on the rough ground, wrists up and tied to a hard pole behind her. Her butt was numb from sitting for what felt like hours. But that worried her less than the thought of the Magus arriving tonight. She pressed her palms together to stop them from trembling. The spell would bring everything into the open. What is she going to do? What if her life as Princess Ariana is revealed? Normally, she’d be ecstatic about that cause everyone will finally see that she’s telling the truth. However, for some inexplicable reason, a cold dread stayed coiled in her stomach. Her heart thudded painfully in her chest, as if her lungs couldn’t draw enough air.The tent flap rustled. A guard muttered something, and Clara slipped inside with a wooden tray holding a bowl of broth."They'd only let me bring this." Her eyes looked red and puffy. "Elena, everyone is saying you were the one who tried to kill the Princess. But I know it's not true, and I told them s
The slap came without warning. Ariana’s head snapped to the side, more in shock than in pain. The Princess stood before her, her eyes cold and threatening. "How did you know there was an assassin and that they were aiming an arrow at me?"Gingerly, Ariana pressed a hand to her cheek, then she turned to face the woman glaring at her. Fury seized her heart.“How dare you lay your hand on me?”The Princess’ brows raised, incredulity mirrored in her face as well as that of the guards behind her. “What did you say?”“I have had it with you and the way you’ve been treating me. I saved you from an arrow, and instead of being grateful, you have the nerve to hit me? So should I have left you to be killed?”“What insolence!” The Princess raised her palm. Ariana flinched, eyes shutting as she braced herself for the hit.“That’s quite enough, Ariana.” King Myde’s voice cut through the tension as he entered the tent, with Kaleb right behind him. Both women whipped at him. But the words were direct
Ariana clutched the wagon’s wood tightly, her face scrunched up like a sour lemon. For a brief moment, she entertained running her mouth. Letting out all the words she had been holding in her chest against him. Worse, the beguiling curl on Kaleb was practically begging her to do precisely that. This demented bastard! He’s probably waiting for me to slip up!Clara was anxious. As she bit her nails, her eyes darted between Ariana and Kaleb.“What? You can’t talk anymore?”Ariana took deep breaths. As calm as possible, she answered through gritted teeth. “No, Captain. It’s all a figment of your imagination. I’m clearly not hiding anything.”"Are you sure?" Kaleb pressed. “Because your face looks like you’re about to do something very difficult.”Would you give it up already?“I already told you,” she growled. “It’s nothing. Nothing is wrong, okay?”Kaleb smirked. "Alright, if you say so," he said, flipping the reins and going back to the front of the march. Bastard.“Is there something
"A hunting trip, My Lord?" "Yes," King Myde answered. "It's almost time for the annual Northern Woods Hunting Trip. I want you to prepare diligently for it. You and your men must be fully prepared to keep all the attending nobles and participants safe." "Pardon my boldness, Sire, but will such action be wise, given the current circumstances?" Kaleb trailed off, tone edged with uncertainty "So, I made sure that the information about the missing seal didn't get to anyone else except those who already knew. The investigation is ongoing, and things must continue as usual so no one suspects that all isn't well." King Myde sighed, looking suddenly aged and weary. "The Council is just waiting to hear it so they can declare me unfit to rule." The last words were so faint that Kaleb nearly thought he'd imagined them. King Myde straightened. "You may go." Kaleb bowed and left. —————— The hunting camp needed forty servants, and the list was in his hands by midday. Kaleb ran his
The next day, Kaleb’s housekeeper woke Ariana before the sun rose. Three guards escorted her to the palace, keeping a close eye on her. It seemed that being a suspect didn’t stop her from doing her old tasks. She was given to Clara. After a breakfast of lukewarm, salty barley porridge and stale rye bread, she quickly taught her the basics at the washbank.Five minutes later, Ariana wanted to cry. Washing was hard. Is this what the servants go through while cleaning her clothes?“Is something wrong, Elena?” Clara asked, hands beating the cloth she was washing against the flat laundry stones."Are you sure this is truly the duty I used to do as Elena?”Clara paused momentarily, confusion flickering in her brown eyes. “Um, yes. Why are you asking that?”“Because this is difficult!” Ariana snarled, dropping the soaked clothes in her hands and standing. “I mean, this is the most degradin
Ariana’s eyes lit up.“Every two weeks, you’d slip out of the palace at night to see someone. However, whenever you came back, you’d always look terrified. Your hands would be shaking so badly that you would sit on your bed counting your fingers for hours. Anytime I asked you who it was, you would go blank and tell me never to ask again.”Outside, Kaleb’s eyes narrowed.“If you knew when I left, why didn’t you follow me, and how come the night guards never caught me?”Clara snorted. “Oh, I did follow you. Countless times. But for some reason, you always disappeared before you reached the courtyard—every single time. I don’t know how you never got caught. I guess you must be highly skilled at evading the night guards.”Ariana’s mind whirred. A mere maid having midnight rendezvous with an unknown person yet no one ever caught her. The woman she had possessed her body
