FREYA'S POV

His mouth is everywhere at once.

My neck. My jaw, the sensitive spot near my ear.His hands move slowly up my sides, lifting my dress along the way. The dress folding at my waist, moving higher up my legs and honestly, I couldn’t care less.

"Adrian." His name comes out breathless and needy. I sound desperate. I am desperate.

"Say it again." His teeth graze my collarbone. Not hard enough to hurt. Just enough to make me arch into him. "I love hearing you say my name like that."

  • The Professor's Mate Clause    FREYA'S POV

Chapter 12 FREYA'S POV"Absolutely not," Elder Miriam says, for the second time in ten minutes."We're not asking to interfere with the negotiations," I say, keeping my voice level even though I want to shake her. "We're asking to relocate to the outpost nearest the Ashveil border. As Council liaisons. That's it.""That's exactly the kind of thing that undermines Aurora's authority, and you know it." Miriam folds her hands on the desk between us. "The moment her parents show up within striking distance of the negotiation, every noble in that court stops seeing her as a legitimate ambassador and starts seeing her as a mouthpiece. You'd be handing Draven Ashveil a weapon."Adrian, seated beside me, hasn't said much, which usually means he's building an argument he thinks will actually land instead of wasting the effort on the first one."With respect, Elder Miriam," he says now, "we're not proposing this out of parental anxiety. We have intelligence suggesting the border incidents are

  • The Professor's Mate Clause    KADE'S POV

Chapter 11 KADE'S POVThe second wolf breaks from the treeline before I've even placed the first.I shove Aurora behind me on instinct, no time to think it through, and catch the flash of gray fur cutting fast through the underbrush to our left. Not one of mine. I know every wolf in my patrols by scent alone, and this one reeks of unfamiliar territory and something sharper underneath... fear, maybe, or desperation."Stay behind me," I tell her again, though I can already feel her refusing before she says a word."There's two of them," she says, low. "One circling from the east."She's right. I catch it a half-second after she does, a second shape moving through the brush on our flank, and something in my chest tightens with an emotion I don't have time to examine properly impressed, mostly, that she clocked it as fast as I did."Rogue wolves," I say. "Not Council, not mine. Could be the same group that's been hitting the border.""Then we need to catch one alive. If they're connected

  • The Professor's Mate Clause    AURORA'S POV

Chapter 10 AURORA'S POV"Border patrol," I repeat, staring at Kade like he's just suggested something insane. "You want me to join a border patrol.""It's tradition," he says, entirely too pleased with himself. "Any Council representative negotiating treaty terms observes our territory firsthand. Can't very well argue about border security if you've never actually seen our borders.""That sounds like something you invented five minutes ago.""It's in the treaty precedent from the original Council formation. Look it up." His mouth twitches, not quite a smile. "Unless you're afraid, Ambassador.""I am not afraid of a patrol.""Then get dressed. We leave in an hour."I do look it up, out of pure spite, and to my genuine irritation, he's actually right — there's a clause buried in decades-old Council precedent about joint territorial observation during treaty negotiations. I spend the ride out to the border trying to figure out if he actually knew that off the top of his head or just go

  • The Professor's Mate Clause    FREYA'S POV

Chapter 9FREYA'S POV"She's called every night like she promised," I tell Adrian, setting my phone down on the kitchen counter. "But something's off. She's too careful on these calls. Too rehearsed.""Rehearsed how?""Like she's reading from a script instead of just talking to me." I lean against the counter, arms crossed. "You know how she gets when she's hiding something. Same as you used to."Adrian looks up from the reports spread across the table, something wry crossing his face. "I never hid anything from you.""You hid an entire supernatural bloodline from me for weeks.""That's different.""Is it?" I raise an eyebrow, and he has the grace to look mildly chastened, which is more than he usually offers me on this particular argument. "I'm not saying she's in danger. I'm saying my daughter has a tell, and she's using it every single night on the phone with me."He sets his papers aside, giving me his full attention the way he still does, twenty years in, whenever something's ac

  • The Professor's Mate Clause    Chapter 8

AURORA'S POV"You must be the ambassador everyone's talking about."I look up from my documents to find a man I haven't met yet standing at the edge of the garden, dark-haired, sharply dressed, with an easy smile that doesn't quite match the calculating look underneath it. He carries himself like someone used to being watched and enjoying it."That depends what they're saying," I reply."Mostly that you held your ground against half the court at dinner without breaking a sweat. That's rare, for a Council delegate." He crosses the garden and takes the seat Kade vacated less than an hour ago, uninvited but not unwelcome, exactly. "Draven Ashveil. Kade's cousin."Something in my chest goes carefully alert. I remember the name from my briefing files — a noble with a claim to the throne that never materialized, close enough to Kade's inner circle to matter, distant enough to be worth watching."Aurora Reed-Metcalfe.""I know who you are." His smile widens slightly. "Everyone in this fortr

  • The Professor's Mate Clause    Chapter 7: KADE'S POV

KADE'S POVI tell myself I was just passing through that corridor. It's not entirely a lie. I do have business in that wing most evenings, checking in with the night guard rotation before I retire. But I also know, if I'm honest with myself, that some part of me had been keeping track of exactly where Aurora's dinner conversation ended and exactly how long it would take her to walk back to the guest wing, and that's not the kind of awareness a man develops by accident."You didn't have to intervene," Rhys says the next morning, dropping into the chair across from me in the war room. "Bram runs his mouth. He always has. He wouldn't have actually touched her.""He was threatening a Council delegate under our roof.""He was grieving loudly at a wolf who happened to be standing nearby. There's a difference, and you know it." Rhys studies me over his tea. "You didn't intervene last month when Lady Corwin cornered the trade envoy from the coastal territories over tariffs. You let that play

  • The Professor's Mate Clause    CHAPTER 11

FREYA'S POV My heart is racing. His words should annoy me. Should make me angry. Instead they make me feel warm. Wanted. Like maybe I am not just another responsibility."I do not know what I feel." The admission comes out quiet. "Everything is so confusing. Every time I look at you I do not know

FREYA'S POV The shower helps. Hot water. Steam. The feeling of being clean. I stand under the spray longer than necessary. Put off going downstairs. Put off facing Adrian and whatever this morning is going to be. Eventually the water runs cold. I get out and wrap myself in a towel. Stare at my
