For six years, Zara Grey has lived under a curse she doesn’t understand. Six times, fate has given her a mate—only for each one to reject her and mysteriously vanish without a trace. Marked as unwanted, whispered about in every pack, she has steeled herself against hope. But when Kael Draven, the ruthless Lycan King, claims her as his mate, everything changes.
View MoreThe scent of pine and rain clung to the evening air as Zara stood at the edge of the Moonstone Pack’s gathering grounds with her hands clenched into fists. Her heart pounded, though not with fear—no, she had long since stopped fearing rejection.
She already knew how this night would end.
Before her, Alpha Kieran stood tall, his golden eyes flickering with unease. His fingers twitched at his sides, and Zara could see the battle waging within him. His wolf wanted her, called to her, but the man—the Alpha—was resisting.
“I can’t,” he finally said, his voice barely above a whisper. “I reject you, Zara Grey, as my mate.”
The words settled like a weight in the pit of her stomach. A dull ache spread through her chest, the familiar sting of a rejected bond. But she didn’t flinch. She didn’t beg. She didn’t even cry.
Instead, she exhaled slowly and met his gaze with cold, unreadable eyes. “I accept your rejection.”
Gasps rippled through the gathered wolves, but Zara turned on her heel and walked away before she could see their pitying stares. She had been through this five times before. Six now. She had lost count of how many times she’d been told she wasn’t good enough. That she was cursed. That something was wrong with her.
Six mates. Six rejections.
The moon hung high above the trees as she made her way back to the Beta Quarters, where she lived with her best friend, despite being second-in-command of her pack’s warriors. Her fingers trembled as she pushed open the door to her small cabin.
She hadn’t taken more than two steps inside when a sharp knock echoed against the wooden frame.
"Who is it?!" There wasn't a single trace of emotion in her voice.
"It's me, Denice. You've locked the door.."
Zara turned back around and made her slowly to the door, dragging her feet across the floor as she made heavy strides.
Denice immediately sensed the tension in the air the moment the door was opened. Without asking any further questions, she wrapped her arms around Zara and pulled her into a warm embrace.
"It's okay, you don't need to tell me how this one went." Denice mouthed.
"It's the curse again isn't it, I know you wouldn't want to tell me the truth, but the curse is the reason he rejected me, isn't it?!" Zara slapped her palm across her face, holding back the tears that threatened to cascade down her cheeks, and slowly pulled away from Denice.
"You have to take it easy on yourself, Zara. This isn't your fault, remember we are still trying to find a way around this...." Her best friend, Denice wrapped her arms around Zara and tried to console her, while she soaked her dress with her hot tears.
"For how long is it going to take, how long are we going to keep on finding a way around this?!" Zara screamed at the top of her lungs. She was finding it hard to take in air at this point,
The air felt contaminated and it held her in a choke hold. "Take it easy on yourself, Zara, I realized isn't your fault," Denice said again and kept holding her as she wept.
"Do you need me to get you anything to eat or drink?" She asked her.
"No, I do not want to eat anything. I'm going to be fine." Zara wiped her face and suddenly went to the door.
"I'm about to head out, I'll be back in the morning." She said in a low tone while placing her hand on the handle of the door.
"Tomorrow morning? Where are you going to?!" Denice asked in shock.
"Just going for a stroll...I'm going to calm my wolf.." she informed her.
"Hold on, let me grab my coat, I'm going to come with you," Denice said, spinning around immediately to search for her coat.
"There is no need to, Denice. I'm going to be fine, besides, I need a moment alone to put my thoughts together." She paused and then as if she were trying to recollect something, she lifted her gaze to the ceiling.
"If I don't return home tomorrow morning, you know where to start looking." And with that, she went out of the house without anything on her and closed the door with a loud bang.
"Zara, wait!" Denice tried to call out but she was already gone. Her face fell with agony.
Never had she encountered any wolf, even while growing up that was going through as much pain as Zara was. She had a pure heart and should never be put through this kind of hurt.
She was rejected six times in a row all because of the rumored curse surrounding her. Denice had been with her for more than a decade and had never witnessed this curse herself manifesting in Zara.
Nothing extraordinary ever happened while she was ever around Zara and it was all a mere myth that the pack had cooked up, but still, there was a reason for contemplation.
Neither of the women could tell why Zara kept getting rejected by her mates. Denice thought her previous mates weren't wolf enough to handle her, because she was the best Warrior in their pack but Zara still believed that they could sense her curse and immediately flee without return.
The cold air stung Zara's face, drying off the remaining tears that dropped eagerly from her eyes.
Zara’s wolf stirred inside her, alerting her about the environment she was in, she had strayed too far away from safety.
Her instincts screamed at her to be cautious, but she squared her shoulders and continued walking with her hands shoved in her pocket.
When suddenly, she caught a towering figure standing in the shadows, shrouded in darkness.
She spun around and Instantly felt him. His presence was suffocating, his power pressing down on her like a storm about to break. The moonlight caught his face, revealing obsidian-black eyes that seemed to look straight into her soul.
She knew who he was before he even spoke.
It was Kael Draven. The Lycan King.
The most feared ruler of their kind.
“Zara Grey,” he said, his voice deep and smooth as a blade sliding from its sheath. “You are mine.”
The people are saying you are a goddess,” Elder Aliya began. Flattery was always a good place to start.Evelyn blushed, and a wide smile spread across her face. “The people have an eye for good things.”“I know you are not,” Elder Aliya followed up with that. The smile and glint in Evelyn’s eyes died as quickly as they had lit up, and her face pursed in a frown.“I have a sixth sense for this type of thing and I can tell from a glance that there is nothing regal about you.”Disdain began to dance in her eyes as she stared at Elder Aliya, a smirk forming at the edges of her lips.“Don’t you have anything better to do at your age?” Evelyn asked. She was not just going to sit there and take insults from this wrinkly old woman.Elder Aliya chuckled, “Relax child, I come as a friend.”Evelyn eyed her head to toe, “No thanks, I can’t imagine being friends with something like you.”Elder Aliya’s eyes narrowed, “Listen to me you brat! You're coming to this pack is an unforeseen blessing that
The tension in the air remained thick as both ladies stood staring at each other.Zara had a burning anger in her eyes and she had her claws out, She didn’t mind that Evelyn was unarmed and noncombative, she was ready to use them on her, All she needed was a reason.Evelyn on the other hand was breathing heavily, her eyes littered with her growing frustration. The longer she stood there, the further away Kael Draven went, she needed to see him, she needed to get her hooks into him as soon as possible.Zara stood in her way and she could not think of a way to get past her. “Put the fucking clothes on and take a seat!” she barked at Evelyn in the same voice that she used to issue orders when she was put in charge of the pack.Evelyn exhaled hard and then crossed her arms in her bosom, “You cannot make me do anything I don’t want to do, you are not the boss of me,” she repeated.Zara slowly closed the distance between them, each step was deliberate and calculated, like a wolf slowly cozy
“I can’t put on this trash!” Evelyn barked. “Get me something better!”Zara squinted and looked at her in confusion, “Do you think I am your maid or something?”“Aren’t you?” Evelyn replied with a confused look of her own.Zara gasped in disbelief, “You don’t want to wear what I gave you? Fine, feel free to go naked!”As soon as Zara said that, she regretted it. This crazy woman might do that and Alpha Draven was still outside.Draven could not move from his seat, he was worried that his hardness might burst through his jeans and stick out.He kept picturing it, her firm perfect breasts, perfect curve, and the goodness that he caught a good view of when she parted her legs. The more he thought about it, the firmer he became, he could not get her out of his head, could not shake away the thought. It would be a disaster if Zara came out and saw him like this.It had never been like this with Zara, why? With her, even as much as he loved her, he had no difficulty controlling himself.May
Joel was having a hard time with the blond lady with the beautiful blue eyes, he had managed to find out that her name was Janet but that was about the only useful piece of information that he got before she clammed shut.“Listen to me, you are safe here, you have nothing to worry about,” he said, trying to reassure her.Janet was not having it, she was shaking like a leaf, “Please don’t hurt me,” she muttered.Joel sighed in frustration, “I am not going to hurt you, we are not going to hurt you. We saved you, remember? We saved you. We are on your side, just tell me where you are from.”That was no use, Janet broke down and started crying, She squeezed herself into a ball and kept bawling.Joel could not believe his eyes, it was as if he was dealing with a child, what was the meaning of all this?“I said I am not going to hurt you, can you just stop and listen to me?” he yelled.Big mistake, Janet just cried harder and then she started shouting, first it was small little baby yelps a
“I am Evelyn, Rightful mate to the alpha King!”Those words hit Zara head-on like a shockwave, For a few seconds, she was speechless. It would have been one thing if Evelyn had said this before Zara had introduced herself as the mate of Alpha Draven. But to have the nerve to say this, after Zara had already locked down that position, was just preposterous. The worst part about it, they were out in the open and Zara was not the only one who heard it.As soon as she got over the initial shock, Zara reacted, purely from instinct, she grabbed Evelyn’s arm and yanked her to the side of one of the buildings there.“Ouch, stop it, you are hurting me!” Evelyn protested as Zara’s fingernails dug into her arms like steel clamps. She was not expecting Zara to be that strong, in her mind, she could take her in a fight, now she was not so sure.“What the hell did you just say now?” Zara asked furiously now that they were alone.“I didn’t say anything,” Evelyn protested.Zara had still not let go o
Joel was left with the uncomfortable task of finding out who the two beautiful but mysterious women were.He wanted nothing to do with this task as it would require him to report directly to the alpha. The last thing Joel wanted to report to the alpha was failure. And on top of that, he had no idea where to begin.Well, the blonde with the piercing blue eyes was awake, he guessed he would start with her.“Where are you taking me?” she asked him, staring at him with those enchanting eyes.Joel found it difficult to breathe as he swallowed hard, By the goddess, this stranger was a beauty.“We just need to ask you some questions,” he grunted.“Questions?” she looked visibly frightened, “Why, did I do something wrong?”“Oh no, nothing like that. We just need to get a sense of where you are from and how you got here.”“The other lady, the one with the orange hair, who is she?” she asked.“Oh, she? You don’t have to worry about her, let’s just focus on you,” Joel said. He was struggling to
