The Elder sighed and settled into a chair just beside Zara. “The curse that plagues the Lycan King was never his alone to bear. It was passed through your bloodline, Zara. Your ancestor betrayed the first Lycan King, dooming every ruler that came after him.”
Zara’s pulse pounded. “And now I have to fix it?"
The Elder nodded gravely. “To break the curse, either you or King Draven has to die."
Zara’s throat tightened. “Is there no other way?”
The Elder hesitated, then shook her head.
A lump formed in Zara’s throat as she looked back at Draven's still form.
He had spent his life fighting against this darkness. He had refused to mark her, hoping to spare her from the fate tied to his.
But she was the only one who could save him.
Her life for his.
A future for her pack.
A future for him.
Zara closed her eyes. She had already been rejected six times. Maybe this had been her fate all along.
She reached for the dagger at her belt, her hands steady.
Then Kael’s grip tightened around hers.
Her eyes snapped open as he whispered her name.
And for the first time, Zara saw fear in the eyes of the Lycan King.
He knew.
And he didn’t want her to do it, "please Zara. At least not yet. I haven't gotten the chance to even know you yet and you're going to leave." He said weakly.
Zara's eyes fell on the point where their fingers intertwined.
"I know you might not know this.." His voice broke through her thoughts, "...but you're the first ever mate in my life. There has been no woman before you and I am definitely sure that I do not want any woman after."
Zara's breath hitched in her throat at his words. How she had never known that alpha Draven had not been with any mate before her.
"Your majesty. Please let her get on with this, time is already running out." The elder spoke up, slightly irritated that Zara had not stabbed herself yet.
"Let the man air out his thoughts." The healer beckoned and Alpha Draven went on when the whole place fell silent again.
"I've never experienced genuine love before and the moment I saw you, I knew things would be different. I was just about to mark you when I was reminded of the curse by my wolf."
"It would have been very easy for me to take your life if I had accepted you or just rejected you outrightly but—but I wanted to give our mating bond a chance!" Alpha Draven revealed.
What was the feeling that was swelling Inside Zara? Never had mere words had the potency to conjure up such powerful emotions in her and it made her heart sink into her stomach.
She opened her mouth to say something but hesitated when the words were not forthcoming.
"Your majesty, I beg of you. Let us get on with this. Allow her to do what she must so we can free ourselves from this curse that has held our pack in bondage for decades." The elder spat out in spite.
"Can we not find a way around this, please? Enough lives have been murdered just to get rid of the curse—but not this one life, I cannot let this one life be taken away from me when I haven't even fully grasped it yet." Draven pleaded and tightened his grip on her.
"This 'life' is quite different, your majesty. She is the one to leverage our pack, so let her carry on, now that she has agreed to do it." The elder replied.
"Do you really want to do this, Zara?" Alpha Draven, while his eyes bore deep into her soul.
Zara's wolf stirred, her eyes falling onto the dagger. There was no conviction in her heart that she wanted to back away from this. Even her wolf did not attempt to dispute.
"I—really don't know." Her voice was raspy. Her life has been a roller coaster of events and her latest discovery that she was born just to face so many rejections and then die made her heartache.
"Then let me be the one to die instead..."
"Your majesty!!!" The elder exclaimed in disbelief.
"...hand over the dagger to me, Zara." He continued, ignoring the threatening gaze she shot at Zara if she were to release the dagger to him.
"I cannot let you do this, Your Majesty. I can't let you die just to get rid of a 'curse'. You barely even know me." Zara protested.
"That's more reason why I want to be the one to do this, you don't deserve to die for me, Zara, and I need you to understand."
"Your majesty, please, I cannot let the Lycan King die in my place. What is going to happen then if you die, what is going to be the fate of your pack?" Zara asked with a trembling voice.
"You'll be the one to rule in my place when I'm gone." He replied almost instantly.
"That is an abomination and you know it, Your Majesty. To have a cursed wolf rule over us." The elder spat into the ground with distaste.
"You forget that we are cursed too and once I die, we all will be cleansed," Draven informed her and loosened his hold on Zara's as his body grew weaker—Zara could sense the rapid deterioration of his Body and knew something had to be done.
She couldn't let the King die and as much as she didn't want to admit it, she didn't want to die either—the mere thought of it scared her greatly.
"Hand the dagger over to me, Zara, I will not let you do this. You do not deserve to die this way." Alpha Draven let out.
"And neither do you!" Zara said for the first time, clutching the dagger tightly to her chest.
“This is outrageous,” the Elder spat, watching the discourse unfold with disgust on her face. “Are you really going to sit there and call yourself loyal to this pack when you cannot do something as simple as this?” she could not understand why Zara hesitated, trading her life for that of the Lycan King was supposed to be a simple decision and an honorable one at that. Zara’s eyes darted from the fuming elder to the frail form of Draven on the bed. His eyes were partly open, and she could see his pupils staring into her soul, begging her not to do it. “I’m sorry,” Zara stuttered and got to her feet backing away from Draven. Her head was starting to swirl, his words had done something to her that she did not even believe was possible. She had been hurt over and over again by words – words of rejection. Words in general stopped to have any meaning to her. But not Draven’s words. When the Lycan King had spoken to her with such vulnerability and sincerity, it had stirred somethi
“C’mon Zara, make up your mind, we are running out of time.”The elder’s voice was terse. She could see that she had done most of the job; all she needed to do now was give Zara a little extra nudge, and the deed would be done. She used ‘we’ to give Zara the impression that they were in the conundrum together. In reality, she did not care a damn about her, Zara was a means to an end and she needed her to play her role to that end.Zara sighed, she could not do it, she could not live while alpha Draven suffered and died, she would do it, she would make the ultimate sacrifice for her pack.“I’m ready,” her voice was full of determination. The Elder nodded, a solemn look on her face as she walked Zara back into the cabin.“What is it again?” the healer asked looking up.“Could you give us a moment?” Zara asked.“Alpha Draven is very weak and he is sleeping, he does not need your argument and noise–”“Just leave the room,” the elder said irritably. The healer looked suspiciously from the
Denice recoiled as if a snake had struck her as she saw Zara and alpha Draven lip-locked.Her mouth hung open, what?Zara jerked back suddenly, taken aback by Denice’s scream.Alpha Draven sighed and fell back on his bed and closed his eyes, the chemistry was broken by the unwanted intrusion. He sighed deeply, even if he died, he knew he would die happy.“Denice?”“I’m sorry Zara…” she shook her head – there was no time to process what she just saw now, there was something more pressing. “This cannot wait!” Denice said.Zara looked at alpha Draven as he laid on his bed, her eyes were hyper focused on his lips as her head buzzed and her lips tingled – did that just happen?“Zara!” Denice yelled. She shook her head and snapped out of her daydreaming.“I am sorry, alpha,” Denice pleaded from far, she did not dare take a step further, even on his sick bed, he was frightful to her.Zara stood up, her legs felt wobbly and she staggered towards Denice, “Wha- What is going on?”Denice grabbed
Zara braced, the man was moving fast and swiftly, cutting through the night air as if he were a weapon himself. She had her whole attention focused on him but then there was a tingling sensation behind her, something inexplicable that she could not explain.Years of battle and combat had taught Zara to live at the mercy of her instincts, as much as she wanted to focus on the dark figure wielding a sliver blade and charging towards her, she could not ignore the warning her body was giving her.She took her eyes off the target right in front of her and looked back, there it was – another figure clothed in black, also charging silently towards her from behind. There were two of them? No, not two!Three! While she was turning, her eyes caught sight of something – no, someone on one of the tree branches. There were three attackers, two were with silver daggers, what of the third one?Zara heard the whistling sound of an arrow cut through the still night air and just managed to dart out of
Elder Aliya was aware of Zara’s suspicious gaze but she was also aware that Zara had no basis to accuse her.She was an Elder, highly revered and respected in the pack, Zara on the other hand was a nobody beta warrior who was risen to the status of pack leader because of an unfortunate turn of events.Even though Zara undoubtedly had all the military power, Elder Aliya was still confident in her spiritual power as an elder. What mattered was that the assassin was dead and with him dead, no finger could point back to her.Zara had a similar train of thought going on in her mind as she watched the elder. Why would she do something as suspicious as killing the assassin? That meant that she must have had something to do with the assassination attempt.Zara did not have any proof and knowing how unstable things were in the pack right now, she was not in a haste to point fingers.Denice had said that she heard some of the warriors plotting against her, she did not say anything about Elder A
Denine was momentarily thrown off by the sudden tap on her shoulder. But now as she settled down to look at the man who was speaking, she was thrown off once more. Her eyes were wide with surprise as her jaw hung open and she gawked at him, she could not believe that the legendary warrior, Joel was speaking to her.For a brief second, Joel himself was confused, did he not articulate himself well? Why was Denice staring at him like he was deformed or something?“I’m sorry, what did you say?” Denice replied with effort after struggling to pull herself together. She was already angry that she had made a fool of herself in front of Joel, she did not plan to make it any worse.Joel took a deep breath and then leaned in close to Denice. Her breath caught in her throat as the handsome face and clear grey eyes loomed close to her.“I heard your call to arms. I have some information that is of grave importance to leader Zara,” he spoke slowly and clearly.Denice nodded, “Okay…” her brain was b
The sound of heavy armor kept on drawing nearer and nearer. The two guards posted in front of Alpha Draven’s cabin tensed up and got into their combative stance. They were armed with spears with a dark silver tip.Joel looked around, “There are only five of us… we don’t know how many are coming.”“Our priority is alpha Draven!” Zara barked. “You two, get in there, if anybody that is not me steps through those doors, kill them!”“Aye!” the guards chorused and then ran back into the cabin and sealed the door.“Now there are only three of us,” Joel commented, reassessing the situation.“Two – ” Zara corrected and then turned to Denice, “Go, get reinforcement and bring them to protect their alpha, now!”Denice was shaking in panic, “Zara, I can’t leave you…”“Now!” Zara barked at her, cutting her off. Nothing else mattered right now except keeping Alpha Draven alive. She would not let any harm come to him.Denice shuddered at the countenance of her friend, she was not used to seeing Zara
It had been one disaster after another, now, two attempts had been made on Zara’s life. She was not under any illusion that that was the last attempt. They were getting bolder and more brazen, soon she might get challenged publicly and that would be bad.Why did they not understand that she did not even want this role? She was just a chair warmer for alpha Draven. Or did they believe that Alpha Draven was a lost cause and that her curse had sentenced him to death?Zara pondered all these as she stood in front of the cabin where Alpha Draven was.Even Elder Aliya told her that killing herself was the only way to save alpha Draven but then Elder Aliya tried to kill her… or so she suspected.Could she trust her that dying was the only way to save the Alpha King? Was there not some other way out there?Zara had just believed Elder Aliya blindly because she thought that she had the pack’s best interest at heart but now she was not sure about that. She took a deep breath before announcing h
“What is it?” Joel asked with a frown. He hated the fact that Denice had interrupted his quiet moment with him and Zara and was feeling irritated about it.Denice did not notice his displeasure, she was so busy being all caught up in her panic, “Those warriors are at the pack house, they are making a fuse, asking the elders to overrule you.”“What!” Joel exclaimed. That was not part of the plan, what the fuck did Dion think he was doing?Zara sighed as she got up, it was one trouble after the other, “Is Elder Aliya there?” she asked.“What?” Denice was confused by the question.“Elder Aliya, is she there yet?” Zara repeated.“No, no, I don’t think that I saw her there,” Denice shook her head.Zara and Joel shared a look, obviously the same idea ran through their head, they needed to get there before Elder Aliya did and made things worse.Zara moved and Joel was about to fall in step behind her when she swerved around to face him.He almost bumped into her and stopped just inches from
