The Elder sighed and settled into a chair just beside Zara. “The curse that plagues the Lycan King was never his alone to bear. It was passed through your bloodline, Zara. Your ancestor betrayed the first Lycan King, dooming every ruler that came after him.”
Zara’s pulse pounded. “And now I have to fix it?"
The Elder nodded gravely. “To break the curse, either you or King Draven has to die."
Zara’s throat tightened. “Is there no other way?”
The Elder hesitated, then shook her head.
A lump formed in Zara’s throat as she looked back at Draven's still form.
He had spent his life fighting against this darkness. He had refused to mark her, hoping to spare her from the fate tied to his.
But she was the only one who could save him.
Her life for his.
A future for her pack.
A future for him.
Zara closed her eyes. She had already been rejected six times. Maybe this had been her fate all along.
She reached for the dagger at her belt, her hands steady.
Then Kael’s grip tightened around hers.
Her eyes snapped open as he whispered her name.
And for the first time, Zara saw fear in the eyes of the Lycan King.
He knew.
And he didn’t want her to do it, "please Zara. At least not yet. I haven't gotten the chance to even know you yet and you're going to leave." He said weakly.
Zara's eyes fell on the point where their fingers intertwined.
"I know you might not know this.." His voice broke through her thoughts, "...but you're the first ever mate in my life. There has been no woman before you and I am definitely sure that I do not want any woman after."
Zara's breath hitched in her throat at his words. How she had never known that alpha Draven had not been with any mate before her.
"Your majesty. Please let her get on with this, time is already running out." The elder spoke up, slightly irritated that Zara had not stabbed herself yet.
"Let the man air out his thoughts." The healer beckoned and Alpha Draven went on when the whole place fell silent again.
"I've never experienced genuine love before and the moment I saw you, I knew things would be different. I was just about to mark you when I was reminded of the curse by my wolf."
"It would have been very easy for me to take your life if I had accepted you or just rejected you outrightly but—but I wanted to give our mating bond a chance!" Alpha Draven revealed.
What was the feeling that was swelling Inside Zara? Never had mere words had the potency to conjure up such powerful emotions in her and it made her heart sink into her stomach.
She opened her mouth to say something but hesitated when the words were not forthcoming.
"Your majesty, I beg of you. Let us get on with this. Allow her to do what she must so we can free ourselves from this curse that has held our pack in bondage for decades." The elder spat out in spite.
"Can we not find a way around this, please? Enough lives have been murdered just to get rid of the curse—but not this one life, I cannot let this one life be taken away from me when I haven't even fully grasped it yet." Draven pleaded and tightened his grip on her.
"This 'life' is quite different, your majesty. She is the one to leverage our pack, so let her carry on, now that she has agreed to do it." The elder replied.
"Do you really want to do this, Zara?" Alpha Draven, while his eyes bore deep into her soul.
Zara's wolf stirred, her eyes falling onto the dagger. There was no conviction in her heart that she wanted to back away from this. Even her wolf did not attempt to dispute.
"I—really don't know." Her voice was raspy. Her life has been a roller coaster of events and her latest discovery that she was born just to face so many rejections and then die made her heartache.
"Then let me be the one to die instead..."
"Your majesty!!!" The elder exclaimed in disbelief.
"...hand over the dagger to me, Zara." He continued, ignoring the threatening gaze she shot at Zara if she were to release the dagger to him.
"I cannot let you do this, Your Majesty. I can't let you die just to get rid of a 'curse'. You barely even know me." Zara protested.
"That's more reason why I want to be the one to do this, you don't deserve to die for me, Zara, and I need you to understand."
"Your majesty, please, I cannot let the Lycan King die in my place. What is going to happen then if you die, what is going to be the fate of your pack?" Zara asked with a trembling voice.
"You'll be the one to rule in my place when I'm gone." He replied almost instantly.
"That is an abomination and you know it, Your Majesty. To have a cursed wolf rule over us." The elder spat into the ground with distaste.
"You forget that we are cursed too and once I die, we all will be cleansed," Draven informed her and loosened his hold on Zara's as his body grew weaker—Zara could sense the rapid deterioration of his Body and knew something had to be done.
She couldn't let the King die and as much as she didn't want to admit it, she didn't want to die either—the mere thought of it scared her greatly.
"Hand the dagger over to me, Zara, I will not let you do this. You do not deserve to die this way." Alpha Draven let out.
"And neither do you!" Zara said for the first time, clutching the dagger tightly to her chest.
Elder Lysara – the White seer came out from a special entrance in the villa and walked up to the raised platform where Zara was standing. As soon as she stood up, the whole crowd fell silent and everyone looked on with awe and anticipation. It was not every day that the common folks saw the White Seer, the reverence in their silence was unmistakable.Elder Aliya’s heart sank when she was Elder Lysara – there was no way that the legitimacy of this ritual could be in doubt now, the White Seer was involved. At first, she thought that Zara might have pulled a fast one on her by lying to the alpha but there was no way she would have been able to convince Elder Lysara to go along with her.How come she had never heard of this ritual in all her research? But to fair, she had never looked for a way to purify Zara.Zara’s heart beat doubled as she knelt there on the raised platform watching the White Seer approach. The last time that she saw her, she had dropped a prophecy that had scared the
“I… need… to… be punished?” Zara repeated slowly, she could scarcely understand the words that had come out of the alpha’s mouth.Did he not mean to say that Evelyn was to be punished for killing in the pack? That was what he meant to say, right? That was what he meant, right? It must be some sort of a mistake.“Come with me!” Alpha Draven roared and stormed out of the small cabin, his body shuddering with anger.Zara followed him behind, her lips still trembling with fear and disbelief.“What did I do wrong?” she kept muttering as she followed Draven behind.Evelyn was the only person who seemed to be enjoying what was happening. A small grin of satisfaction spread on her face as she walked behind Zara. She was smirking – her charm was working, the alpha was doing as she wanted him to do.But she was not thoroughly convinced yet.If the charm was working as well as she thought, why did he not ravish her when she was alone with him in his study? How was he able to resist her then? The
For a split second, the whole cabin fell silent.Zara stood there, frozen mid-step, inches away from unraveling a mystery, stopped by the fiery look in her lover’s eyes.Alpha Draven, frame filling the doorway, steam curling out of his nostrils as he fumed, fingers clenched into a tight fist as he fought the urge to charge right at her.Zara just disobeyed a direct command from him – if anyone else did this – he would rip their neck from their head and hang it.But Zara was not anyone else… she was his mate – the only person that made him feel vulnerable and condensed – ripping her head from her neck was out of the question. What was he going to do?“Alpha save me, she has gone mad!” Evelyn screamed as soon as the initial shock of Draven’s presence passed.“Don’t listen to her, she is the killer!” Zara yelled back, her mind snapping back to her body. She blocked the way as Evelyn tried to deftly slip past her and run to Alpha Draven. She caught hold of her shoulders and shoved her bac
Draven’s eyes flashed madly as he turned to look at Elder Aliya, “What do the people want?” he roared.“I determine what the people want! Not you… not anyone else… get out of my sight!”Elder Aliya jumped to her feet and ran out of the room, her body was trembling as she shut the door behind her. That did not go as she thought it would, the alpha’s temper was still as sharp as ever, but at least, the seed had been planted. As long as she held her breath, Zara would never become the Luna, the prophecy warned that she would be the death of the alpha, she was not going to let that happen.****“Why is she following us?” Joel whispered to Zara.Zara looked over her shoulder and saw Janet trailing behind her, she had no idea what to make of the blonde-haired woman. One thing was certain, she was very different from Evelyn but that did not mean that she could be trusted.Zara shrugged as her attention panned over to Denice who was on her right-hand side, “It means a lot that you are here,”
A soft knock sounded on the door waking Zara from her slumber, she yawned as she made her way sleepily to the door.“Yes?” She pulled it open as she yawned wildly.“You are Zara, right?”Zara frowned, the face that was staring back at her was not one that she knew, the lady had magnificent blonde hair and piercing blue eyes.“Who are you?” Zara asked, suddenly curious. It was not every day that a total stranger walked up to her front door.“I hear that you are the person who makes things happen around here,” Janet continued.“Slow down, you still have not told me who the hell you are.”“Oh, I am sorry for that,” she bowed curtly, “I am Janet,” she said with wide expectant eyes as if that was supposed to explain everything.Zara looked at her blankly, “Janet? Who are you?”Janet’s jaw dropped, and Zara still did not know who she was. Everyone else seemed to have heard about her. “Uhm, I was rescued by your pack–”“Oh, you are one of the two,” Zara said tightly, Evelyn did not exactly l
Zara scoffed in disbelief, “You must be joking! Go back to wherever it is that you came from.”“I am dead serious, Zara. I can’t do this without you!” Joel didn’t bother hiding his eagerness. If anything was going to convince Zara to help him, it was that.Zara was not convinced, she had just been shot down by the alpha, now here was the beta put in charge of the task coming to ask her for help?“I do not like to repeat myself,” she muttered and tried to sidestep him.Joel moved and planted himself firmly in her path, “Please,” he said, his eyes begging more than his lips.Gone were the days when he wanted Zara dead, right now, he needed her. He was not equipped to handle the type of weird things that were happening in the pack.“Get out of my way!”“You cannot turn your back on us now, Zara. C’mon.”She gasped, “I didn’t turn my back on anyone, Joel! You heard the crowd out there, they don’t want me, they think I am responsible for this.”“When have you ever let that stop you before?
