LOGINLYRA POV
The next couple of days, Lucien doesn’t talk to me. Not once do I hear his voice echo in my mind, not even to urge me to find him and please him as he’d done since he figured out that I am his mate. In fact, I don’t even see him around the pack house as I’m doing my chores.
In the beginning, I find it strange. I didn’t expect him to disappear all of a sudden, especially not after he promised to do something special for me. But in his absence, it’s also easier to forget about his roughness and the red flags I shouldn’t avoid. As the hours pass and the time for the ceremony draws nearer, my heart beats faster and faster with a mix of hope and anticipation.
When I start questioning his silence, Moon insists he must be busy. It’s his ceremony after all, where he’ll finally receive the Alpha title from his father in front of the entire pack and all of Shadow Lake’s allies. He has to have a lot to prepare for. Especially if he plans on announcing that I’m his mate. The thought makes my heart flutter, and I put my doubts aside.
Besides, it’s not so bad that we don’t meet anymore, because I haven’t been feeling well for the past two days. At random times, mostly at night, I would feel an intense pain in my chest all of a sudden. It would go away after half an hour or so. I’d even gone to the pack doctor, worried that something could be wrong with my health, but he reassured me that there was nothing out of the ordinary and I shouldn’t stress about it.
Perhaps it was just nervousness—I had a feeling that tonight, everything would change.
“Lyra!” Maribeth calls at the same time she pounds on my door. “Are you ready? The event is about to start!”
Her reminder prompts me to take one last look in the mirror. My emerald eyes scan my reflection, from the faint freckles across my nose and cheeks hidden under makeup, to my long, pale blonde hair tied in a tight pony tail that descended in flowing waves. I don’t usually have time to take care of my skin and hair, but I made a point to finish my chores earlier so I could properly get ready. If Lucien was going to publicly claim me at his ceremony, I needed to look the part—especially since I couldn’t avoid the mandatory waitress uniform.
“Yes,” I reply, smiling at my reflection one last time before rushing out the door.
I follow Maribeth and the other Omegas into the Grand Hall, where the ceremony will be held. The venue has been entirely decorated for the party, and though it’s empty now, it would be filled with hundreds of guests in less than an hour.
First, I help in the kitchen with whatever the staff needs. As time passes, I can hear shifters arriving, filling the hall one by one. But it’s only when my heart pulses harder that I know Lucien is here. The matebond always intensifies when he’s near.
Eager to see him, I quickly find an excuse to leave the kitchen, volunteering to start serving the first glasses of wine to the guests. I weave through the crowd, hoping no one stops me as I follow the bond towards Lucien.
And in the center of the hall, there he is.
Lucien looks the most handsome I’d ever seen him. His tall, broad-shouldered build is accentuated by his expensive black suit, and his usually tousled dark hair is neatly combed back. From his sharp jawline to his confident posture, he looks every bit the powerful Alpha he’s supposed to become tonight.
As excitement rushes in, I pick up my pace, only to freeze steps away from him when his stormy gray eyes meet mine. They rarely softened around me, but today, they seem cooler than I remember.
Still, simply being close to him again makes my lips start to curl, but my smile fades before it’s even born when Lucien calls, “You, Omega.”
Omega.
Not mate. Not even Lyra. Just the rank that sounds more like an insult.
I swallow my hurt and slowly approach him, only for him to say, “My glass is empty. Take it away for me, won’t you?”
For a moment, I just stand there, taken by surprise by his indifference. It had always been like this in public, but I thought maybe tonight he would start letting his walls down.
“It’s too soon,” Moon defends him. “He needs to keep playing the part until the announcement is made. We need to play along.”
For the last time, I decide to listen to her and bow my head before Lucien. “Yes, Alpha,” I say as I take his glass.
I try to ignore the alarm bells going off in my brain as I walk back towards the kitchen. Have faith, Lyra, I urge myself. Only a few more minutes of this—then, I’ll no longer be Lucien’s secret.
Just as I leave the kitchen with another tray filled with wine glasses, I notice a shift in the atmosphere. Guests start taking their seats. Lucien walks up to the raised dais, where he stands in front of his father, Alpha Ronan, and his mother, Luna Selene. This is it—the beginning of the ceremony.
When Alpha Ronan’s voice fills the space, my heart stutters and I stop to listen. “Ladies and gentlemen. Alphas, Lunas, Betas, and Gammas. Thank you all so much for being here tonight for my son’s Alpha Ceremony.” A round of applause goes off before the Alpha continues, “Before we begin, Lucien has a very important announcement to make.”
I can barely stand still as I overflow with anticipation.
Lucien steps forward. “My dear friends, it is with great joy that I announce I have found the perfect she-wolf to become my Luna and aid me in my duties.”
Moonveil is so excited she starts spinning around inside my head, and as much as I want to do the same, I hold back my excitement, straightening my posture as I wait for him to call my name. Yet just as I take my first step towards him, confident I will soon be invited to join him on stage…
He stretches his hand out to another female.
My world crumbles as he announces, “Please meet Liana Voss—my chosen mate and future Luna!”
The crowd bursts into cheers, the sounds of their celebration so loud no one hears the glass shattering as I let the tray fall to the floor.
LYRA POVAs I stand before the towering double doors of the Lycan King’s Throne Room, I need a moment to steady my breathing. My heart pounds so loudly I’m sure the guards on either side of the entrance can hear it. And though it’s quiet in my head, the silence doesn’t comfort me.Moon, I wish you were here with me, I whisper to myself, and as expected, get no response.I still haven’t gotten used to not feeling her presence as strongly. The emptiness where she should have been feels wrong, as though an essential part of me has been ripped from me.My fingers tighten around the fabric of my dress nervously. It was given to me right before I left the hospital, since my already worn out clothes had to be thrown out after a day out in the wilderness. The piece is nicer than anything I’ve worn in years, and maybe that’s why I feel so uncomfortable in it.Because in the end, it doesn't change who I am.An omega. A nobody. A runaway standing at the doors of a king.I swallow hard, forcing m
LUCIEN POV“Ah!”The morning after my Alpha Ceremony, I’m jolted awake by a sharp stabbing pain in my heart. I sit up in bed, instinctively pressing a hand to my chest in an ineffective attempt to numb the discomfort. It only gets worse as the seconds pass. A second, stronger wave hits me, and I groan louder.“Lucien?” Liana’s sweet, groggy voice sounds distant, muffled by the pain, even though she’s lying right next to me. “What’s going on?” she asks, rubbing her eyes. That’s a good fucking question.I’m an Alpha, the most powerful in my pack. I never get sick. I can’t remember the last time I felt mild discomfort—let alone a pain this great. Strangely enough, if I didn’t know that it’s impossible for someone with a bloodline like mine to have a heart attack, I’d assume I was having one. What the hell was going on with me?Then, subtly, I hear my wolf whimper, “Mate…”At that moment, it clicks.“Argh!” I grunt for the third time as the pain intensifies, and I clutch my chest harder.
LYRA POVMy senses come back to me slowly. Everything hurts, from my fatigued muscles to my bruised limbs, tiny cuts scattered across my arms and legs after carelessly running through the forest. I also have a terrible headache. And to top it all off, it seems my wolf is still hibernating, her presence still faint and distant, dormant deep within me. But that seems unimportant as questions start to flood my mind.Am I dead? No, I’d like to think the afterlife wouldn’t be this painful. Yet how could I still be alive? That huge, monstrous beast… I was sure it was ready to eat me. Unless maybe it was never even real, just a product of an exhausted, adrenaline-filled mind.In an attempt to understand what was going on, I forced my heavy eyelids open. The first sight that greeted me was an endless expanse of white. For a moment, I wondered if I could really be in the afterlife. Then my vision came into focus, and I realized my pristine surroundings were composed of bright lights and ivory
LYRA POVA rush of pain surges through me, but I don’t stumble. Even when it feels like my chest is about to tear open, I don’t slow down. I keep pushing through, sprinting away from Shadow Lake as though I’m running a marathon to save my life. In a way, I guess I am.At least the adrenaline helps mask the intense pain. The anxiety of not knowing where I’m going combined with the fear of what danger may lurk nearby keep me sharp and motivated as I continue to run faster and faster. But I realize I haven’t seen the worst of it when I suddenly feel my wolf’s consciousness start to waver.“Moon?!” I call out, already desperate.“Sorry, Lyra…” she responds, but her voice is too faint. “The rejection… It… Weakened me.” Fear spikes as I anticipate her next words. “I will be out… for a while.”“What do you mean ‘out?’” I wonder, my pulse quickening. “I need you, Moon! You can’t leave me now!”“You’ll be… Okay,” she insists, though my despondency won’t let me believe it. “It’ll be… Good. Whil
LYRA POVThe night in the dungeon feels endless. If the pain and humiliation of discovering my mate’s betrayal in the most heartbreaking way possible weren’t enough, I also have to deal with the physical pain of feeling him cheat by making love to another she-wolf all night. Although my mind knows better than to cry for such a shameless, cruel male, my body remains a victim of the magic bond that still exists between us. It causes my stomach to churn and my heart to tighten, making it hard to breathe. That is when I realize, this is the same pain I had been feeling for the past couple of days. It was obvious Lucien had been fucking Liana ever after mating with me. If only I had connected the dots earlier… Maybe I wouldn’t be in this position now.Besides the pain, I feel frustrated with myself. Though it’s beyond my control, it’s pathetic that Lucien’s cheating affects me so much. I’m angry at him, but I’m more angry at myself for being unable to completely cut ties with him. Damn the
LYRA POVI jolt up in a rush as I see Lucien emerging from the darkness just like a demon straight from hell. Long gone are the butterflies I used to feel when he was near, or the way warmth would spread through me at the sight of him. This time, when our eyes lock, all I feel is disgust and anger. Not even the matebond can blind me now that I’ve seen his true self.“You think I didn’t see you run off in the middle of the most important night of my life?” Lucien’s voice reverberates through the stone walls again. “You were a bad, bad Omega. That behavior is unacceptable.”I’m stunned for a moment. How dare he come find me only to scold me after blindsiding me in front of the entire pack? I didn’t expect an apology from him, but this was absurd. As an Omega, I learned to have a thick skin, but I’m not a rug to be walked over like this.Anger explodes inside of me, and I do something I never thought I would ever do in my whole life—raise my voice at an Alpha.“You lied to me!” I shout,
