LYRA POV

My world starts spinning as the ground seems to collapse under my feet.

I can’t stop staring at the stage as the beautiful she-wolf climbs onto the dais to stand beside my mate. Liana Voss, the only daughter of the Alpha of Ruby Skies Pack, is the living, breathing image of perfection. She has immaculate porcelain skin, a tall, statuesque build, lustrous platinum blonde hair, and gleaming icy gray eyes that shine like two big diamonds.

She is everything I am not.

Lucien goes on talking about how they have been dating in secret for months. How they’re the perfect match, and their union will solidify a very important alliance between their packs who will merge to become the biggest pack in the country. How that will mark a new era for Shadow Lake, making them unbeatable. But over the sound of my shattering heart, I can barely hear him.

Suddenly, the painful truth I’d been trying to avoid is right before my eyes, clear and undeniable—Lucien never intended to accept our bond. From the beginning, he had no plans of presenting me to the pack as his Luna. All he wanted was to use me and humiliate me. But I won’t stand around while he disrespects me and give him the satisfaction to see how much his special surprise has wrecked me.

So I run.

I turn tail and bolt away, ignoring Maribeth’s screams as she scolds me for breaking the expensive glasses. Tears cascade down my face like waterfalls, and I almost trip when they make my vision blurry. Yet I don’t stop running. I don’t stop until I’ve reached the Omega’s wing inside the packhouse. Finally alone, that’s where I let myself fall apart.

The deepest sadness hits me like a tidal wave, the heartache unlike anything I’d ever experienced before. But the worst is the realization that, deep down, I’d known all along that Lucien was only playing with me. I should have accepted reality and rejected him before he could even sense that I was his mate. That would have spared me the suffering. Even after we started being intimate, when I first saw the signs, I should have ended it instead of holding onto foolish hope that maybe, one day, he wouldn’t be ashamed to publicly claim me.

“I’m sorry, Lyra,” Moonveil whimpers inside my head. She’s just as heartbroken as I am, but I can also sense her guilt. “I was the one who told you to trust him. I should have seen our mate for who he truly is.”

“It’s not your fault, Moon,” I reassure her. “You might have tried to convince me, but I only believed because I wanted to. It was my mistake.”

The worst mistake of my life.

And now, I have to fix it.

“There you are, you little brat!” Maribeth’s voice down the hall, immediately stealing my attention. She’s the most furious I’ve ever seen her as she stomps toward the corner where I’m curled around myself, crying. “How dare you abandon us at the Alpha’s Ceremony? We were understaffed because of you!”

I blink. Lucien’s party… Was it already over? Had I been crying for so long? I must have lost track of time.

“What? Don’t you have anything to say about your poor behavior?” Maribeth presses, seething with rage as she stands before me. “No apologies? No excuses?”

I don’t look at her. Nor do I open my mouth. I know it’s only going to make things worse. Besides, what would I even say? That Lucien is my mate? If by some miracle she believed me, it would only serve to further humiliate myself.

“Nothing, huh?” Maribeth scoffs. “I’ll teach you not to cause such trouble again. Get out of there and kneel!”

My knees are weak, my body still suffering from my mate’s betrayal, but I force myself to stand anyway. I walk out of the corner and kneel in the center of the room. This isn’t my first rodeo—I’ve endured several of Maribeth’s disciplinary punishments—but I wait for her next command anyway.

“Take your shirt off,” she barks. I do.

Not even a second later, the whip cracks across my back, setting my skin ablaze. I manage to hold back my first cry. And the second. But by the third strike, I finally break. A dozen more come until it feels like my entire back is raw.

“Now you must have learned your lesson,” Maribeth snarls without an ounce of empathy. “But just in case you need more time to rethink your actions, I’ll order you to go to the dungeons. You are to sleep there by yourself. And you better not be late for your chores tomorrow, or my whip will sing another thirty times! Do you understand?”

“Yes,” I breathe out, my soul and body so torn I barely have the strength to speak.

“Good. Leave, now, before I decide you need more lashes before bed!” she threatens, and I don’t think twice.

By the time I reach the dungeons, my tears have dried out. I wander the place built to keep rogues and prisoners, trying not to pay attention to the foul scent of old blood and excrement. Thankfully, the stone-cold room is empty tonight. I manage to find a semi-clean cell and sit there, leaning against the wall.

The stone surface is rough and cold. If I could shift into my wolf form, the soft fur would protect me, but that wasn’t an option. So I just stay there, shaking, praying the hours will go by quickly. This isn’t too terrible anyway—I doubt I would have been able to sleep even in my bed after Lucien’s betrayal. At least here, I’m further away from him.

Or at least that’s what I think, until I hear footsteps, and that unmistakable scent hits me. The fragrance I once adored alone makes me stiffen, but when his voice echoes in the cave-like space, cold dread settles inside. Goosebumps rise all over my skin.

“There you are, you dirty Omega.”

LYRA POVAs I stand before the towering double doors of the Lycan King’s Throne Room, I need a moment to steady my breathing. My heart pounds so loudly I’m sure the guards on either side of the entrance can hear it. And though it’s quiet in my head, the silence doesn’t comfort me.Moon, I wish you were here with me, I whisper to myself, and as expected, get no response.I still haven’t gotten used to not feeling her presence as strongly. The emptiness where she should have been feels wrong, as though an essential part of me has been ripped from me.My fingers tighten around the fabric of my dress nervously. It was given to me right before I left the hospital, since my already worn out clothes had to be thrown out after a day out in the wilderness. The piece is nicer than anything I’ve worn in years, and maybe that’s why I feel so uncomfortable in it.Because in the end, it doesn't change who I am.An omega. A nobody. A runaway standing at the doors of a king.I swallow hard, forcing m

LUCIEN POV“Ah!”The morning after my Alpha Ceremony, I’m jolted awake by a sharp stabbing pain in my heart. I sit up in bed, instinctively pressing a hand to my chest in an ineffective attempt to numb the discomfort. It only gets worse as the seconds pass. A second, stronger wave hits me, and I groan louder.“Lucien?” Liana’s sweet, groggy voice sounds distant, muffled by the pain, even though she’s lying right next to me. “What’s going on?” she asks, rubbing her eyes. That’s a good fucking question.I’m an Alpha, the most powerful in my pack. I never get sick. I can’t remember the last time I felt mild discomfort—let alone a pain this great. Strangely enough, if I didn’t know that it’s impossible for someone with a bloodline like mine to have a heart attack, I’d assume I was having one. What the hell was going on with me?Then, subtly, I hear my wolf whimper, “Mate…”At that moment, it clicks.“Argh!” I grunt for the third time as the pain intensifies, and I clutch my chest harder.

LYRA POVMy senses come back to me slowly. Everything hurts, from my fatigued muscles to my bruised limbs, tiny cuts scattered across my arms and legs after carelessly running through the forest. I also have a terrible headache. And to top it all off, it seems my wolf is still hibernating, her presence still faint and distant, dormant deep within me. But that seems unimportant as questions start to flood my mind.Am I dead? No, I’d like to think the afterlife wouldn’t be this painful. Yet how could I still be alive? That huge, monstrous beast… I was sure it was ready to eat me. Unless maybe it was never even real, just a product of an exhausted, adrenaline-filled mind.In an attempt to understand what was going on, I forced my heavy eyelids open. The first sight that greeted me was an endless expanse of white. For a moment, I wondered if I could really be in the afterlife. Then my vision came into focus, and I realized my pristine surroundings were composed of bright lights and ivory

LYRA POVA rush of pain surges through me, but I don’t stumble. Even when it feels like my chest is about to tear open, I don’t slow down. I keep pushing through, sprinting away from Shadow Lake as though I’m running a marathon to save my life. In a way, I guess I am.At least the adrenaline helps mask the intense pain. The anxiety of not knowing where I’m going combined with the fear of what danger may lurk nearby keep me sharp and motivated as I continue to run faster and faster. But I realize I haven’t seen the worst of it when I suddenly feel my wolf’s consciousness start to waver.“Moon?!” I call out, already desperate.“Sorry, Lyra…” she responds, but her voice is too faint. “The rejection… It… Weakened me.” Fear spikes as I anticipate her next words. “I will be out… for a while.”“What do you mean ‘out?’” I wonder, my pulse quickening. “I need you, Moon! You can’t leave me now!”“You’ll be… Okay,” she insists, though my despondency won’t let me believe it. “It’ll be… Good. Whil

  • The Rejected Omega is the Lycan King's Obsession   Chapter 6

LYRA POVThe night in the dungeon feels endless. If the pain and humiliation of discovering my mate’s betrayal in the most heartbreaking way possible weren’t enough, I also have to deal with the physical pain of feeling him cheat by making love to another she-wolf all night. Although my mind knows better than to cry for such a shameless, cruel male, my body remains a victim of the magic bond that still exists between us. It causes my stomach to churn and my heart to tighten, making it hard to breathe. That is when I realize, this is the same pain I had been feeling for the past couple of days. It was obvious Lucien had been fucking Liana ever after mating with me. If only I had connected the dots earlier… Maybe I wouldn’t be in this position now.Besides the pain, I feel frustrated with myself. Though it’s beyond my control, it’s pathetic that Lucien’s cheating affects me so much. I’m angry at him, but I’m more angry at myself for being unable to completely cut ties with him. Damn the

  • The Rejected Omega is the Lycan King's Obsession   Chapter 5

LYRA POVI jolt up in a rush as I see Lucien emerging from the darkness just like a demon straight from hell. Long gone are the butterflies I used to feel when he was near, or the way warmth would spread through me at the sight of him. This time, when our eyes lock, all I feel is disgust and anger. Not even the matebond can blind me now that I’ve seen his true self.“You think I didn’t see you run off in the middle of the most important night of my life?” Lucien’s voice reverberates through the stone walls again. “You were a bad, bad Omega. That behavior is unacceptable.”I’m stunned for a moment. How dare he come find me only to scold me after blindsiding me in front of the entire pack? I didn’t expect an apology from him, but this was absurd. As an Omega, I learned to have a thick skin, but I’m not a rug to be walked over like this.Anger explodes inside of me, and I do something I never thought I would ever do in my whole life—raise my voice at an Alpha.“You lied to me!” I shout,
