Mira had not slept. Her body had lain on the thin mattress in the servants’ quarters, her eyes closed, her breathing slow enough to fool anyone watching but her mind had stayed awake thinking about that scent that had seemed familiar.

    The newly prepared breakfast arrived several minutes later.The maids entered the dining hall carrying trays of freshly prepared food, placing them carefully across the large table. The smell of warm bread, eggs, fruits, porridge, and several other dishes filled the room.Under normal circumstances, the sight of so much food would have been comforting.
