Chapter Five

Rosalie’s POV

I stood outside the hospital for several minutes after leaving the doctor’s office, unable to move.

The pregnancy report was still in my hand, folded carefully inside the envelope the nurse had given me.

I looked down at it again, even though I already knew what it said.

Pregnant, theword should have filled me with happiness.

For seven years, I had dreamed of seeing that word written beside my name. I had prayed for it, cried for it, gone through treatments for it, and endured humiliation because of it.

Now that it had finally happened, I could not even smile.

Because I knew the truth.

The child was not Harrison’s, I had not been with Harrison for almost a year, the only man I had been with was Sebastian.

My fingers tightened around the envelope as I walked toward the car.

I had no idea what I was going to do.

I could not tell Harrison yet, not until I found out what I am going to do with it, even though I had used years searching for this and Something was wrong.I could feel it.

And until I knew the truth, I could not risk telling Harrison that I was carrying Sebastian’s child.

I drove home with the envelope hidden inside my coat pocket.

When I entered the house, I was surprised to see Harrison in the living room.

He was sitting on the sofa with his phone in his hand, but the moment he heard the door open, he looked up.

His eyes immediately settled on me. “Where are you coming from, Rosalie?”

His voice was cold, my  heart jumped,  said nothing.

I simply stood there, trying to control my breathing.

His eyes narrowed. “I asked you a question.”

I lowered my gaze. “I went out.”

“For what?”

I opened my mouth, but before I could answer, the envelope slipped from my pocket. It fell onto the floor between us.

I froze.

Harrison looked down.

Then he bent over and picked it up.

My entire body went cold. “Harrison…”

He turned the envelope over in his hand, I stepped toward him, but he had already opened it, his eyes moved across the paper, then  they stopped.

For several seconds, he said nothing.

I waited for the anger, I expected him to accuse me of lyingc  expected him to ask who the father was.

I expected the same cold expression I had seen on his face when he handed me divorce papers.

Instead, his eyes slowly widened. “You’re pregnant?”

I couldn’t answer.

He looked at the report again as though he needed to make sure he had read it correctly.

Then he looked at me. “Rosalie, you’re pregnant?”

My lips parted, but no words came out.

I was terrified, I had spent the entire journey home imagining his reaction, and none of those thoughts had prepared me for this, I thought he would shout, I thought he would slap me, I thought he would demand to know who I had been with.

Instead, he suddenly walked toward me and pulled me into his arms.

I stiffened. “You’re pregnant with my child,” he whispered.

I stared over his shoulder, I could not breathe properly, how could he thought I was pregnant with his child when it been long we had anything.

He hugged me tighter. “Be careful.”

His voice was different now.

There was happiness in it.

A happiness I had not heard from him in years. “After seven years…” He pulled back and looked at me. “Now I finally have an heir.”

My heart sank, he  believed the baby was his.

I swallowed hard. “Harrison…”

He touched my face. “Why didn’t you tell me immediately?”

I looked at him, unable to find an answer.

How could I tell him?

How could I look into his eyes and say that the child he was celebrating did not belong to him?

His smile faded slightly when he noticed how quiet I was.

Then his expression changed. “Wait.”

He looked at me carefully, his  brows drew together.

“When did we…” He stopped.

I felt my heart begin to pound.

Harrison looked away as if he were trying to remember something. “When did we last…”

He did not finish the sentence.

I remained completely still.

He rubbed his forehead. “I remember…” His voice became uncertain. “That night.”

My stomach tightened. “What night?”

He looked at me again.

For a moment, confusion filled his eyes.

Then something seemed to come back to him. “That night I was half asleep.”

I stared at him.

He continued slowly, still trying to piece the memory together. “I remember coming into your room. I remember you were there. I remember lying beside you.” He frowned. “But I was barely awake.”

My heart was beating so hard that I was afraid he could hear it.

Harrison looked down at the pregnancy report. “So… did we actually have sex that night?”

I couldn’t speak.

He looked at me, waiting for an answer.

Then he seemed to remember something else.

His expression changed. “Yes.” He nodded to himself. “That must be it.”

“Harrison…”

“That night,” he repeated. “I was half asleep, but I remember being with you.”

He gave a small smile.

“I didn’t even realize it could have happened then.”

I stared at him.

He had remembered a night that I had almost forgotten.

A night when he had come into my room, held me, kissed me, and stayed beside me for a while.

But nothing had happened between us, not  like that, he  had left and  after that night, he had never touched me again.

Harrison looked at me with complete certainty now. “So this child is mine.”

My fingers curled against my palm, I wanted to tell him the truth, I wanted to tell him that he was wrong but then I remembered Sebastian standing in front of me.

I remembered the way Harrison had looked at him when he returned.

Fear, real fear.

There was something between those two men that I did not understand.

And until I knew what it was, I could not tell Harrison anything.

He pulled me back into his arms. “Rosalie, you have no idea how happy you have made me.”

I closed my eyes.

His arms were around me, but I had never felt more trapped.

Because the man holding me believed he was finally going to have his heir.

And he had no idea that the father of that child was the very man he had spent seven years trying to destroy.
