Chapter 42

Amber’s POV

Did we make it on time?

My limbs felt tired and heavy, the strain of the rushed journey seeping into my bones. At the back of my head, Vera whined. We needed to rest. Needed time to think—to process everything.

Maggie, Madame Griselda, and Valeria’s info on my mother.

It was all a lot. Going back to bloodmoonlight had drained me more than I realized.

“They’re waiting for us,” Delilah’s worried whisper made me raise my head.

I blinked confused, then saw what she had seen.

On the border, Beta Damon and Mina.

My heart filled immediately. Mina was fine. She was even strong enough to wait for us. Fresh strength seemed to rush through my veins as we trudged into the water.

Behind me, Taylor was helping to carry the girl. He and Delilah were a little slower, but I didn’t wait for them.

The water was cold against my ankles as I waded through and rushed for my best friend.

“I missed you,” Mina cried softly as my hands enveloped her in a tight hug.

She smelled like home.

Chapter 54Amber’s pov“Don’t listen to the crowd. Keep your head down. Try to be fast, speed will help, and—-““I— I’ll be fine,” I cut Delilah’s worried rant as I held her hands. We were at the edge of the pack square but sheltered from the audience outside by a tent.Several maids had come into the tent helping to dress me up and get me ready for the first trial.I still had no idea what it would be but no one was allowed in the tent with me except Delilah.“I promise,” I tried to reassure her again, squeezing her hands.Delilah had a strange expression on her face. Her eyes avoided mine as she shook her head and took a step back. At that exact moment, the tent flap pushed open and Luna Gwen stepped inside.I blinked in surprise.“She knew,” Vera whispered. “How did Delilah know Gwen was about to come inside?”I had no answer to that so I shook it off. She probably heard the Luna’s footsteps.“Are you ready?” Gwen purred smugly as she strolled into the makeshift room.I gave her a

Chapter 53Amber’s povMina was yelling. Screaming profanities at Maggie but I didn’t listen. I couldn’t bring myself to stop or diffuse the situation so I just turned away. The commotion seemed to continue as I mindlessly walked out of my room. She came to me. Mentioned the surgery to my face. I was numb.“Well, me, I’m angry!,” my wolf, Vera snapped but I ignored her, the ache in my head greater as I turned the corner of the hallway.I didn’t know where I was going yet as my feet subconsciously stopped outside his door, I knew it was Tristan’s room.My limbs were heavy, my breath shaky as I lifted my hand to knock.Almost like we were pulled together by an invisible force, the door swung open at that exact time and my mouth went dry.He was naked. Well, not completely, his lower body was clothed, he had pants on. But the up, he was shirtless.“Amber,” my name was a soft whisper on his lips, a second before he reached out and pulled me into his room.Tristan’s space smelled like him.

Chapter 52Amber’s pov“What were you thinking?!” Mina’s angry voice yelled.I grunted in pain, moving a second too late as Jaman’s fist slammed into my side.“Are you crazy?!”I saw Jaman swinging for me and I ducked immediately. Panting as sweat beads rolled down my head. “You must be crazy. That’s it, you’re clearly not yourself. You’ve gone mad,” Mina threw her hands up dramatically. The pain at my side had slowed to a throb, but Jaman didn’t relent. Side step. Duck. Defend. Again. My body was as exhausted as my mind.“You can’t go through it with it! You can’t!”“She has to,” Luna Gwen’s smug voice filled the air.Jaman finally stopped, allowing me some reprieve as Gwen’s footsteps grew louder.I doubled over, resting my wrapped fists on my knees as I breathed heavily.Since the news of my trail spread yesterday, Mina has been by my side, freaking out and trying to get me to change my mind. Not just Mina.Tristan, Taylor, even Delilah. Everyone wanted me to back out, but I didn’

Chapter 51Amber’s pov“How did I ever agree to this?” I grumbled with a sigh. Ahead of me, Tristan’s little finger twitched. The only sign he had heard me.I sighed again. Of course, he wouldn’t react. No surprise there. We were trudging through the narrow Silver Moon pack slums. Since my arrival at the pack, I had barely left the palace, much less ventured into the main pack itself.Silver Moon pack was huge. Unlike the pack I came from, Silver Moon pack was a town in of itself. The main roads from the palace were wide, with huge houses that belonged to rich, noble or elder families. From there the wide roads branched into something else. Some sort of network as the main pack came in view. Hospital, market place, a pack square, different shops intertwined with rows and rows of residential houses where the main pack members lived. And at the outskirts, where the rogues and refugees had settled, were the factories and the slums. We walked through their now, the black mud on the floor

Chapter 50 Amber’s pov Vindication. It feels as sweet as cool water on a sunny day. Oh I was still furious, but my brain had cleared. A deep sense of satisfaction settled in me as I released my balled fists then crossed my arms. Just who did Maggie think she was? Was it so easy to claim someone else’s mate as your own? The ballroom hall was silent, the air taut with suspense as Maggie regained her footing. She pushed a strand of her hair behind her ear, her lovely cheeks turning red as her face crumpled in confusion and tears. “I… I… I don’t understand,” she shook her head like she couldn’t comprehend what Tristan had said. “What doesn’t she understand?!” Vera hissed in irritation. “But you’re my mate. You… I…” Maggie shook her head then moved to Tristan again. Vera growled and my blood began to heat up. “Calm down,” Taylor whispered, his hold on my wealth tightening once more. She placed her hand on his chest. “I feel it,” Then held his wrist and held it to her

Chapter 49 Amber’s pov “Amber, look at—“ “Can you breathe?” “Who’s that beautiful lady?” “Wait, she’s from Lady Amber’s pack?” “By the goddess, such drama,” My head was spinning, and different murmurs of the guests were rising around me. “Are you okay?” Taylor’s hold on my waist tightened slightly as he shook me. “Amber, are you good?!” With a sharp intake of breath, I dropped back to reality. The noise was louder, the different perfumes overpowering, the stares making my skin crawl. I turned to Taylor with a tight fake smile, nodding my head as I stepped out of his hold. “I… yes, Taylor. I’m fine. Please excuse me,” He seemed to be saying something that I vaguely registered sounding worried. But I couldn’t listen. My mind was spiraling, my gaze fixed on Maggie. She looked… “Holy smokes, she looks incredible,” Mina whistled as she came up to my side and we pushed through the crowd together. “Didn’t you say, she was close to system failure? Her cheeks are so rosy a
