Sam let out a loud scoff. “How am I doing? Are you kidding me right now, Nate? Months! You haven’t reached out for months! No word. No nothing. We didn’t even know if you were okay outside of what little Finn told me.”

I realized he was crying. Quiet sobs came through the line. Looking down, I crossed my feet and stared at my ankles. Leaving them had been hard, but I knew it was probably just as hard on them, too. I had too much to worry about, to also worry about Sam or Charles. Hearing him cry broke my heart, though. It made me realize I should have called earlier.
