LOGINWe walked for hours without stopping. The woods thickened around us, the canopy of leaves growing dense enough to block out most of the sun. Finn slept in my arms, wrapped in the old, worn blanket, his breath coming in soft, slow puffs against my chest.
My entire body ached, but I didn't dare slow down. Renn led the pack, with Elara bringing up the rear; we were spread out but close together. No one spoke. Our footsteps on the wet leaves and the snapping of branches were the only sounds for hours.
Lena fell in step with me after a while. Her limp was worse today, but she didn't complain. She looked down at Finn with a soft smile. "He's asleep now. That's a good thing."
"He's exhausted. We all are."
Lena hesitated. Her voice dropped to a whisper. "That shift last night… it wasn't right, Liora. I've helped deliver lots of babies, and none of them have ever done anything like that."
I looked down at Finn's peaceful face. "I know. Gage said something about the first born of the Hales, born a thousand years ago… he shifted as soon as he was born. Became a great seer."
Lena's eyes widened. "Gage told you that?"
"He did, just after Finn shifted back. He called it a curse."
Lena shook her head. "It's not a curse. It's a gift. A rare and precious gift, but a dangerous one." She glanced around to make sure we were alone. "My old pack knew of it. The seer line. It's a bloodline that's very rare. Only passed from the mother. Your birth parents must have had it too, and the Hales knew, which is why they were so careful about you. They were scared of what you might become."
A chill ran down my spine. "They whipped me. They made sure I didn't get too far."
Lena's voice softened again. "They were right to be afraid. The last baby to be born with this gift was a boy named Elias, born a thousand years ago. He had the sight so strongly he could see entire battles before they happened. He saved his pack from a war that should have killed them all, but the cost was tremendous. Each vision drained his life away and he was hunted by every other pack because they were terrified of what he knew."
She reached out and gently stroked Finn's cheek. "Your son carries that bloodline. When we became bound, the connection snapped, making his gift even stronger, that is why he shifted when he did and why the Shadow Pack could smell him. They can smell that kind of power and they want him, and all of us, for themselves, so that they may use his visions in their war."
I swallowed hard. "So they're hunting us. Because of me."
"Because of the both of you," Lena whispered. "Your blood awakened the latent abilities in Finn but you are the only one who will know how to control his gift. You are the one who has to protect him."
I glanced at the pack walking ahead of us, Kira and Renn in deep conversation, Gage limping along beside Marcus, his knife clutched tightly in his hand, the children walking ahead with their father. All of them were here with me because I hadn't been able to stand being alone anymore.
"I won't let them take him," I vowed, my voice quiet but firm. "No matter what."
Lena smiled sadly. "I know you won't. But the power has already woken and the visions will become more frequent. You have to be prepared."
We walked in silence for a while, the woods pressing in on us, the forest feeling heavier and more alert. Finn stirred in my arms and let out another soft whimper. I rocked him gently and began to hum the lullaby I always sang him.
The howls from last night still echoed in my mind. The Shadow Pack was no ordinary foe. They were hunters of power and their pack hunted those with rare bloodlines such as mine, or Finn's, so that they might use their victims as weapons. They had done it before, Lena told me. They would do it again.
I looked at the path before us. We were heading east, further into the wilds, but I knew that running would only get us so far. The power in my blood, the power in Finn, had already drawn them.
And they were coming.
I awoke to the solid, warm weight of Finn on my chest, his little fists clenched tight into my shirt. My back still ached with the familiar ache deep in my back and hips, the kind that reminded me every morning that I had given birth not that long ago. The thin blanket was tangled around my legs, and the first gray light of dawn was creeping through the cracks in the walls. The thin mattress creaked under me as I tried to lift Finn. Finn stirred, making those small, hungry whimpers that always tugged at something deep inside my chest."Shh, little one," I whispered, pulling him tight against me. "I've got you."I sat up slowly, wincing as my body protested, and gathered him close. He latched on right away, his tiny fist curling against my shirt as he nursed with quiet little sounds. His warm cheek pressed to my skin. The room smelled of damp wood and last night’s fire. I rocked him gently, listening to the others moving around in the main hall, the soft clatter of pots, Kira’s low vo
The next morning, the house felt different. The rain had stopped sometime in the night and the air was cool and heavy with the smell of wet leaves. The sun shone weakly through the cracks in the windows but there was no joy to be found. We all knew what the clear skies meant, it was time to leave.I sat in the corner of the hall with Finn nursing on my lap. I was holding him close and rocking him slowly while he fed. My body still ached from the long walk we had all endured, I still wondered how the children were doing. I thought but the pain felt far from my gut. Thorne’s words from last night was still fresh in my mind; “You should leave after tonight. I cannot afford to bring that sort of trouble here.”He said it so simply, so matter-of-factly that it was almost impossible to argue with. I understood though. But leaving meant going back into the open wilds with a newborn who had already drawn the Shadow Pack once.Kira was rolling up the dried hides, her movements swift and you co
We walked east throughout the night still the rain was relentless. Mud and roots made up the floor we walked on with roots pulling at our feet at every step.My legs had started to ache from how far I had traveled holding Finn in my arms. My back screamed in pain but still I continued. Finn slept peacefully against my chest warm and safe bundled tightly in his old blanket, the weight of him a constant reminder that I couldn't stop. A soft sigh from Finn caused me to rock him gently and whisper," it's okay, we are fine."Kira walked beside me, her hair completely saturated, her braids dripping water. "We have to get shelter. We can't go back to the lean-to, now that we have left our position exposed they will easily track us down."Renn was ahead a few steps, his spear tightly gripped in his hands. "There is an old overhang about a mile up ahead, I used it when I was on the run from my pack. It should provide enough shelter from the rain for a few hours.Gage shuffled slowly behind me

The shadow in the fire light was unmoving at first. It was standing perfectly still, staring at us. My heart felt like it was beating my ribcage open, I could practically feel it beating in my throat. Finn stirred in my arms with a sleepy mumble and I pulled him tighter against me, one hand resting over his small back as if it could protect him from what waited in the dark.Kira's dagger was already out, its blade flashing in the dying fires. Renn stood with his spear raised up, his muscles tensed and narrowed eyes fixed on the shadows.Gage was still grumbling as he awoke, clearly unaware of our situation. Lena, the soft spoken, lisping healer, jolted awake and fumbled for her small bag of herbs. Marcus, the heavily built, burned smithy, grabbed a heavy log from the fire. Soren, the wiry, red headed scout, scrambled for his bow and quiver, and Elara, the tall fighter with one finger missing from her right hand, was already on her feet."Who's there?" Renn growled, his voice low and g
The howls finally died off into the rain, but that was all. The air felt heavy; like the forest held its breath for something more. I held Finn close, the baby small and warm against me, his breathing soft, even. I was already so tired my arms screamed from holding him throughout the night, but I couldn’t let go. His every movement sent my heart thumping in my chest-he was real. And the world was already shifting around him.Kira was the first to move, groaning as she stretched. She poked the embers in the fire with a stick, bringing a small flame to life. "We can't stay here any longer; the howls were too close."Renn was already inspecting his snares from last night, giving her a curt nod. "I'll go take a look, make sure they didn't leave anybody behind."Gage was already at the fire, drawing his knife in slow, steady strokes across the whetstone. "That cry echoed," he grunted, looking down at Finn, his lips thin. "They heard that. You'll see."I had nothing to say. I continued humm
