LOGINThe wind howled through the iron girders of the bridge, driving rain sideways across the narrow catwalk. Water cascaded off the steel beams, but neither Kaelen nor Elena moved.
Fifty feet of slippery, wet metal separated them, but the space felt suffocatingly small under the weight of Kaelen’s aura. His gaze shifted slowly from the young boy back to Elena, his amber eyes burning with a mixture of disbelief, betrayal, and raw, possessive fury.
"Five years, Elena," Kaelen repeated, his voice cutting through the gale like a honed blade. He took a single step forward, his combat boots echoing against the iron grating. "You told me the child didn't survive the winter after you fled. You signed the rogue registry stating you were alone."
"I did what I had to do to keep him away from you," Elena said, her voice dropping into a low, lethal growl. She shifted her weight, locking her boots onto the catwalk grid to anchor herself as she held her silver blade ready. "You turned your back on me when the Council called for my blood. I wasn't going to let you raise my son to be another heartless weapon for your pack."
Kaelen froze, his jaw tightening so hard the muscles jumped along his cheekbone. "I never turned my back on you. I hunted for you across three territories until the tracks went completely dead!"
"Liar!" Elena snapped.
Behind her, Leo peeked out from behind her leg. His small hand gripped the edge of her jacket, his dark eyes wide as he looked at the imposing man commanding the storm. Despite the terror of the situation, Leo’s internal wolf stirred, reacting to the heavy, oppressive frequency of Kaelen’s voice.
Father. The instinctual realization hung in the air, unspoken yet blindingly obvious to everyone on the platform.
Kaelen took another step, his hands open at his sides, though his posture remained predatory. "Look at him, Elena. He carries my blood. He has the mark of the Vance lineage in his scent profile. You cannot hide an Alpha heir in the human gutter. The council will hunt him, the rogue syndicates will kidnap him for leverage, and the silver border patrols will put a bullet in him the moment his aura flares out of control."
"He is safe with me!"
"He is trapped on a rusted catwalk with five Vanguard squads converging on both ends of this bridge," Kaelen countered, his tone shifting into absolute authority. "Yield, Elena. Come back to the border estate. I will protect you both."
"Never," Elena spat, taking half a step backward toward the edge of the maintenance platform.
Vanya, who had been quietly shifting her weight behind Elena, slowly slid her silver-plated sidearm from her tactical holster, keeping it hidden behind her thigh. "Kaelen," Vanya called out over the wind. "Torin’s men are already at the top of the ladder shaft. If he sees the boy before you secure the Council decree, he’ll act under Protocol 9. He’ll execute the child to prevent a succession war."
Kaelen’s eyes snapped to Vanya, a lethal coldness descending over his features. "Torin answers to me."
"Torin answers to the Pack Law," Vanya fired back. "And you know as well as I do what the Law says about unsanctioned heirs born to rogue mothers."
Before Kaelen could reply, a harsh, metallic clang echoed from the maintenance hatch behind them.
The silver blade Elena had wedged into the latch mechanism shattered with a loud snap. The heavy iron door burst open, and three Vanguard enforcers clad in tactical armor surged onto the catwalk, weapons raised.
"Hold your fire!" Kaelen roared, turning his aura fully onto the newcomers with the force of a physical blast. The air hummed, and the heavy rain seemed to freeze mid-air as his dominant command flattened the enforcers against the concrete pillar. "Stand down!"
From behind the enforcers, Commander Torin stepped into the storm. He didn't look affected by Kaelen's command; his face was a mask of cold, bureaucratic precision. He held a silver-tipped tactical rifle low at his hip, his eyes locking directly onto Leo.
"Alpha," Torin said, his voice amplified by his helmet comm. "The Council sweep flagged the child’s signature ten minutes ago. Protocol 9 has been initiated by the Elders. An unsanctioned Alpha line threat must be secured or eliminated to preserve pack hierarchy."
"He is my son, Torin," Kaelen growled, stepping between Torin’s rifle barrel and the platform where Elena stood. "Lower your weapon, or I will tear your throat out on this bridge."
Torin didn't lower the gun. "Your duty is to the pack, Kaelen. The boy is a rogue liability. If you will not enforce the Law, the Vanguard will."
Elena’s heart slammed into her throat. She didn't hesitate. She grabbed Leo by the waist, scooping him up into her arms, and backed right up to the rusted safety railing overlooking the black, churning river two hundred feet below.
"Elena, no!" Kaelen barked, turning back to face her, his eyes wide with sudden panic.
"We stay together, Kaelen," Elena said, her voice terrifyingly calm as she balanced on the narrow ledge. "You lost the right to choose for us five years ago."
"Mommy?" Leo whispered, burying his face in her neck.
"Hold on tight, baby," Elena murmured.
Torin raised his rifle. Kaelen lunged forward to intercept the commander.
And Elena stepped off the edge into the dark void below.
The guest suite in the west wing of the Northern Crest Estate was larger than any apartment Elena and Leo had occupied over the past five years. High vaulted ceilings supported heavy timber beams, and a massive stone fireplace dominated the outer wall, throwing off waves of deep, comforting heat. Rain battered relentlessly against the reinforced bay windows overlooking the pine forest below, but inside, the air was warm and quiet.Elena sat on the edge of the oversized bed, her hair still damp, watching Leo sleep.Clad in a pair of soft fleece pajamas that had been left in the suite’s wardrobe, the five-year-old was tucked beneath three layers of down blankets. The steady, rhythmic rise and fall of his chest signaled deep exhaustion. The ordeal on the bridge and the icy plunge into the river had completely drained his small body, but even in sleep, his hand remained wrapped tightly around the corner of Elena’s sleeve.Elena reached down, gently brushing a lock of dark hair away from h
The wind screamed in Elena’s ears as they plunged toward the black waters of the river. She twisted her body mid-air, tightly wrapping her legs and arms around Leo to cushion him from the impact. Below them, the river surged violently, but before they hit the freezing surface, a dark shadow dove off the catwalk above.Kaelen didn't hesitate. Rejecting Protocol 9, his pack, and all tactical logic, he cast himself off the bridge behind them.Elena hit the water hard, the freezing impact knocking the breath from her lungs. The black current dragged them under instantly, tumbling them in the freezing abyss. She fought against the crushing pressure, kicking frantically toward the surface with Leo locked in her arms.A powerful hand gripped her jacket collar, hauling them both upward. They broke the surface, gasping for air amidst the white foam. Kaelen was right there, his amber eyes blazing through the dark water. Without a word, he swam with terrifying, supernatural strength against the

Metal shrieked against metal as the heavy van smashed through the barricade. Sparks rained over the windshield, illuminating the tunnel in blinding flashes of red and orange as the vehicle forced its way through the gap between two armored trucks. In the back, Elena slammed against the side wall, shielding Leo with her entire body as the van violently rocked side to side."Hold on!" Elena shouted over the deafening roar of grinding steel and shattered glass.Outside, gunshot rounds cracked through the cavernous underground space. Silver-jacketed bullets tore through the rear doors, punching jagged holes in the sheet metal. Vanya ducked low over the steering wheel, keeping her foot pinned to the floorboards as the van broke free from the blockade and shot into the open air of the river bridge."Elena! The rear axle is hit!" Vanya yelled over the engine’s dying whine. "We're not making it past the bridge!"Elena scrambled forward, pulling Leo with her into the gap between the front seat
The sliding door of the van clicked shut with a heavy mechanical thud, sealing them inside the pitch-black cargo hold. Rain rattled against the metal roof like a barrage of small stones as the engine roared to life, tires spinning against wet pavement before gripping the asphalt and speeding away into the night.Elena kept Leo tucked under her arm, her back pressed against the reinforced wall of the vehicle. In her right hand, she still held the silver-bladed knife, its edge resting lightly against her knee ready for any sign of betrayal.Up front, Vanya glanced into the rearview mirror, her pale grey eyes catching Elena’s guarded stance. "You can put the blade away, Elena. If I wanted to hand you over, I wouldn't be driving you past the Alpha's border patrols.""Forgive me if I don't take your word for it," Elena said, her voice dripping with quiet tension. "The last time I saw you, you were standing right beside Kaelen when the Council drafted the exile decrees."Vanya let out a sho
"On three," Elena whispered, her voice barely audible over the roar of the rain cascading down the pillar.Leo nodded once, his small jaw set with a fierce determination that was far too mature for a five-year-old. He gripped his mother’s hand tight, his small fingers digging into her leather jacket."One... two...""Elena! Don't do it!" Kaelen’s voice thundered across the asphalt, sharp and unyielding, carrying the weight of an Alpha’s direct command. The air vibrated with raw dominance, sending a shiver of pure instinct down her spine, urging her to stop, to yield, to submit. She fought the urge with every drop of willpower she possessed."Three!"Elena slammed her boot into the rusted latch of the storm drain grating. The ancient iron gave way with a screech of shearing metal. Without hesitating for a single second, she pulled Leo close to her chest and threw them both sideways into the black pit below. They fell twelve feet through darkness before crashing into cold, knee-deep run
