Enzo stopped in his tracks the second his eyes landed on me.
He looked like he had a hell of a night. His dark coat was pristine, his jaw freshly shaved, and his hair combed neatly back.
Worst of all, he smelled faintly of expensive vanilla perfume, which was Bonnie’s signature scent.
His dark eyes swept over me, lingering on the oversized hoodie over my bandaged chest, my pale face, and the way I held my arm glued to my ribs.
For a fraction of a second, a flicker of confusion crossed his features. But just as quickly as it came, it vanished, replaced by his usual cold, disappointed scowl.
“What happened to you?” he asked with absolutely no warmth in his voice.
“I took a bad fall on patrol,” I lied, keeping my voice completely flat and emotionless.
If he didn’t care to believe me when I reached out to him, he didn’t need to know the truth now.
My cold attitude caught him off guard. Usually, I would have tried to explain myself or sought a single look of comfort from him, but today I offered nothing.
He opened his mouth to say something, but then he scoffed as his jaw tightened.
“You’re the Chief Warrior and Luna of this pack, Athena,” he scolded harshly. “Getting injured from a simple fall is embarrassing. You need to set a better example for our warriors.”
Embarrassing. The word stung, but I didn’t argue. I just stared at him, my throat dry, feeling completely drained.
He didn’t love me. He loved Bonnie. So anything he said didn’t matter to me.
“What are you doing here anyway?” I asked. “It’s certainly not for me.”
Enzo shifted uncomfortably, adjusting the lapels of his coat.
“I’m here to pick up sleeping herb medicine for Mother. Don’t forget we have dinner at her estate tonight. Make sure you take those pathetic bandages off before you come. You look awful.”
The words stung, but I showed no emotion, which seemed to annoy him even more.
“I understand,” I said softly, swallowing the bitter sadness in my throat.
He brushed past me without another word, his arm clipping my shoulder just hard enough to send a blinding spike of agony straight through my broken ribs. I gritted my teeth against the wall, waiting for the dark spots in my vision to clear.
My wolf would heal me soon, but for now, I had to take Holly’s advice and rest.
That evening, Enzo and I arrived at his mother Martha’s estate.
Taking off my medical wrap as Enzo demanded had been impossible. Even with my wolf’s enhanced healing, my ribs were shattered, so I had worn a thick, high-necked sweater to hide the tape.
The estate’s dining hall was warm, filled with the rich, comforting smell of lasagna, my favorite dish. Martha sat at the head of the table, offering me a sweet, gentle smile as we sat down.
“Eat up, Athena,” Martha said warmly, personally piling food onto my plate. “You work far too hard at the borders, dear.”
A faint, genuine warmth bloomed in my chest. Martha and my late parents had been close friends in their youth. Ever since my mother sacrificed her life for the pack and my father passed away, Martha was the closest thing to family I had left.
For years, I had held onto a quiet dream that Enzo and I could eventually overcome our bitterness and become the legendary warrior couple our parents were. But looking across the table at Enzo, who ate his meal in cold, stony silence, I realized just how foolish that dream really was.
“You look pale, Athena. Are you okay?” Martha asked, concern laced in her tone.
I caught Enzo’s annoyed look from the corner of my eye. Apparently I wasn’t hiding my weakness enough.
“Just tired,” I lied with a forced smile. Martha nodded with a smile of her own.
“Ensure to get some rest tonight, dear.”
I didn’t respond as I continued to eat in silence.
After dinner was cleared, Martha patted my hand affectionately.
“Athena, my head is aching terribly lately. Would you mind preparing that herb medicine for me? No one brews the sleeping mixture quite like you.”
“Of course,” I replied, giving her a small, respectful smile.
I carefully pushed myself up from the table, suppressing a gasp as my ribs throbbed, and went into the small adjoining kitchen. I gathered the dried roots, boiled the water, and poured the hot tea into a ceramic bowl.
As I lifted the tray to carry it back toward the dining room, hushed, tense voices through the cracked kitchen door made me pause.
“Why didn’t you return to the packhouse last night, Enzo?” Martha’s voice was strict, sharp, and accusing. “Were you with Bonnie again?”
“Are you spying on me now, Mother?” Enzo snapped back, his voice full of defensive frustration.
“I don’t need to spy to know you were celebrating her birthday until dawn!” Martha retorted coldly.
“Bonnie lost her wolf saving my life years ago!” Enzo argued passionately. “She was supposed to be my Luna before you forced me to cancel our engagement and marry Athena!”
“And I would do it ten times over!” Martha’s voice lost all its warmth, turning terrifyingly ruthless. “Listen to me, Enzo. You can entertain Bonnie as much as you want in secret. I do not care who you sleep with, as long as you make sure Athena give birth to an heir soon!”
I stood completely frozen in the dark doorway. Sickening horror flooded my veins.
“The Moonlit Pack needs a pureblood heir from fated mates,” Martha continued, each word slicing through my chest far deeper than any rogue claw ever could.
“Athena’s parents died for this pack, making her the perfect, obedient vessel for our bloodline. Once she gives you a strong heir, you can do whatever you want with her. I don't care. But until then, perform your duty as a husband and Alpha!”
My breath hitched in my throat. The warmth I had felt during dinner shattered into complete, unspeakable dread.
Martha didn’t view me as a daughter as I thought. I was nothing more than a breeder to her.
Tears spilled over my lashes, burning against my cheeks.
My hands trembled so violently that the bowl shattered on the ground, and the heated argument inside suddenly fell dead silent.
AthenaI sat at the long dining room table, staring down at the roast meat on my plate without taking a single bite. My stomach churned with a mixture of cold fury and pure exhaustion.Jane stepped into the room, setting a hot cup of tea beside my elbow. She hovered anxiously, fidgeting with her apron before leaning in.“Luna… if I may ask…” Jane hesitated, her eyes wide with curiosity. “Did Alpha Enzo like the cookies you baked for him today?”A sharp, humorless laugh escaped my lips. “I will never bake anything for Enzo again, Jane. He isn’t worth it!”Jane blinked, taken aback by the absolute frost in my voice. “What happened, Luna?”“He gave the Moonlit Stone to Bonnie,” I said in a flat voice. “Right in front of me. He draped the Luna necklace around her neck because she complained her heart was hurting.”Jane gasped, clapping a hand over her mouth in sheer horror. “The Moonlit Stone? The Luna heirloom?! That’s a complete insult to you, Luna!”The look on her face told me she cou
EnzoI snapped. I grabbed Bonnie’s wrists, ripping her hands away from my temples.“Enough, Bonnie,” I said, shoving her back a step.Bonnie gasped, staggering slightly as she clutched her chest, her eyes wide with hurt. “Enzo?”“Athena is my fated mate and the Luna of this pack,” I said, my voice cold, hard, and leaving zero room for argument. “That will never change. Rejecting each other or trying to replace her is disrespectful to the Moon Goddess herself. Do not ever speak like that again.”A flicker of shock flashed across Bonnie’s face before she quickly smoothed her expression into a soft, nervous smile.“I… I’m so sorry, Enzo,” she stammered, raising her hands in a gentle, apologetic gesture. “I was only joking! I didn’t mean to cross a line, I swear. I just hate seeing you so stressed.”She took a slow breath, stepping back toward the corner of my desk with a thoughtful look.“Honestly, though… since I came back a month ago, I’ve heard the pack members talking,” Bonnie murmur
EnzoThe door slammed shut with a deafening rattle, leaving the office in a suffocating silence.I took an immediate step toward the door, my chest tightening as my wolf paced wildly in my mind.‘Go after her!’ my wolf snarled, his voice thick with raw, dangerous fury. ‘She is our mate! You gave away her necklace and humiliated her in front of everyone! Go fix this now! '“Enzo, wait,” Bonnie’s soft, gentle voice broke through the tension.I stopped with my hand hovering over the doorknob, turning back to look at her. She was clutching the Moonlit Stone at her throat, her lower lip trembling as she looked at me with wide, pleading eyes.“Let her go,” Bonnie urged softly, taking a frail step toward me. “Athena is just jealous right now. She’s upset about the necklace, and if you run after her while her blood is boiling, it’s only going to escalate into another huge fight. She needs time to cool down on her own.”“I don’t think that’s a good idea, Alpha,” Tyler spoke up firmly, his brow
AthenaTyler looked at me as if he didn’t know what to say, but Enzo spoke before I could question him more.“It’s the Moonlit Stone,” Enzo said, his voice completely calm as he reached into the box.The air in my throat froze solid. My chest went numb as an icy wave spilled through my limbs.Out of the black cushion, Enzo lifted a heavy, radiant pendant shaped like a crescent moon, its pale blue crystal shimmering beneath the overhead lights. It really was the Moonlit Stone. It was a sacred relic passed down to every true Luna of the Moonlit Pack. For generations, it was said to hold the raw, ancient power of the Moon Goddess, meant only to rest against the chest of the woman who held the highest authority in this pack.Memories flooded back in my head like a flood. On our wedding day three years ago, Martha had brought that box and held this exact necklace in her hands, preparing to fasten it around my neck as part of the sacred ceremony. But Enzo had stepped in and snatched it away
AthenaFor the next few days, Enzo and I slipped into an unexpected, peaceful rhythm. He returned to the packhouse every night, making a point to sit across from me at dinner. Not once did he suddenly rush out because of a call from Bonnie in the middle of the night.Watching him being civil with me… almost homely caused a hope to bloom in my chest. Maybe he really was trying. Maybe our marriage wasn’t completely dead.I was sitting in my bedroom, staring at my reflection in the mirror. Enzo went into his office an hour ago to do some pack business and asked me not to disturb him, but not in a harsh way. He said he’d come back for lunch, and reminded me to wait for him.It was just so surreal. Could my husband really become a considerate husband after so many years? Maybe that murder attempt from Rudolf shook him up.I ran a hand over my scarred, muscled arms. If I was going to be a mother and rebuild this bond, I wanted to change. I wanted to soften my cold, warrior exterior, not jus
AthenaEnzo’s fingers crushed the plastic cap with the pills in it. The glass bottle fractured under the sheer weight of his Alpha grip.“What right do you have to make this decision on your own Athena?” he growled, his voice dropping into a register so dark it made the air in the clinic feel thin. “You are my Luna!”“I don’t want your child, Enzo!” I shouted back, stepping directly into his line of sight. “I don’t want anything from you!”The words seemed to have hit where I wanted them to. But deep down, a quiet, broken part of me remembered when a child with him had been my fondest dream. But that dream was now dead. Before I could move, Enzo grabbed my wrist. His grip was iron, cold and unrelenting, as he began dragging me toward the clinic door.“Alpha Enzo, please let go of her!” Holly yelled, rushing around her desk to grab his arm.Instantly, a wave of crushing, suffocating Alpha aura exploded from him. Holly stumbled back against the wall, gasping as her knees buckled under t
