Chapter 5

Fuck there is two of them. How am I supposed to take them down?

You can’t. You should take that shard and slit you wrist now. You can’t take two of them down. No matter how weak they are. Remember you are weaker than them.

Shut up!

Just remember I offered you an easy way out.

I gripped the shard firmly as I reassessed the creatures behind me. I was right, they’re sickly looking. They’re barely standing.

They were in the same place but their heads were tilted backwards as if they were concentrating on something. Were they listening? Were my footsteps too loud? I shook away the impending anxiety as I peered around for a distraction. I need to lure them away from each other. I spotted a rock and slid my hand along the dirt until I felt the rough surface, not taking my eyes away from the group.

I carefully picked the rock up and tested the weight in my hand, would they be able to hear it? I watched with rapt attention as the smallest of the two sharply shrieked and turned its head towards me.

Oh fuck!

I jerked backwards onto my hands and flung myself away from the looming vampire as it threw one decaying foot in front of the other. I twisted my body and struggled to get my footing as the vampire closed in. I kept backing away as the dust kicked up from my flailing feet. As the vampire peered through the dust. I stumbled to my feet and took advantage of the vampires confusion by getting a head start.

I panted as I ran straight ahead. I could hear the ragged breaths draw in by the creature hunting me down. It would be only seconds before the monster was upon me. I need to come up with something and I needed to do it now.

Fuck! I didn’t know about the dead end!

That’s because you’re an idiot that fucks everything up!

Just as my subconscious spoke I noticed the rod sticking out of the wall ahead. Would I be able to do something with it? What if I could pry the pole out of the wall? That could work. My stride increase as the determination set in. I need to make it. I need to survive. I reached the wall within seconds as I gripped the iron poking out of the destroyed wall. I leaned my weight back as an attempt to get the bar free but it wouldn’t budge.

God dammit, of course! Of course it wouldn’t budge. Just my luck!

How would that work? Why would that work?

I just.. I need.. dammit!

My head whipped to the left as my eyes scanned the surroundings but I couldn’t find anything. My gazed flittered to the approaching creature. As my head jerked to the right to scan the ruins, there! A ledge stuck out from the ruins. If I could reach that I would be able to see where to go I could also escape the vampires.

You’ll slip and fall, not able to escape if you land on the rubble below. That will leave you vulnerable to the attacks.

Shut up!

I bolted towards the ledge to search for a way out but, before I could I heard a piercing cry come from behind me. I looked over my shoulder not pausing in running to see the creatures head had somehow been impaled by the iron pole. I watched in confusion before I shrugged and slowed down but before I could I noticed a ravine.

What the hell did this and why didn’t I see it?

Take two steps forward and I’ll answer your question.

What!? No!

The ravine must have been 30 meters deep and about 8 meters wide with thin rail like steps 3 meters from where I was standing, they led up to a ledge that over looked everything. I need to get up there. I backed away to gain a running start, If I were to jump would I make it to the steps? Only one way to find out!

My legs began pumping as I kept my eyes towards the ledge and leapt, I really hope I make it!

Or you could just fall. That sounds more probable than making it.

“SHIT” I screamed as I gripped onto the rocky ledge of the stair. I quickly hauled myself up to sit upon the tiny rock jutting out. I am so glad that it actually worked!

How do you like those apples!

There is still a way you can die here….

Can you stop!

Sorry to disappoint but I’m not stopping until you’re dead.

I disregarded the comment made by my subconscious as I continued to climb up to the ledge I had originally seen. The tiny rocks that stuck out were nearly loose as my feet sought them out, how am I supposed to get down? I will have to get to the very top to see if there is away for me to get down safely. Once I reached the top I was panting heavily, hunched over on my knees trying to calm my breathing. Once my breathing had become steady I lifted my head to look at the environment surrounding me. To my left there was the town I had been doing my supply runs in, I can’t go back through there. The city was on my right but I ignored it and turned around and looked behind me, it was forest land that I might be able to go through but what would I find that would give my reason to carry on?
