The sight before me sent my blood boiling, my heart hammering like a violent jackhammer against my ribs and my hands curled so tightly into fists that my knuckles turned stark white beneath my tattoos. Charlotte's hazel eyes locked with mine, the corneas red from struggling to breath against that asshole's grip on her throat. Her fingers clamped around his wrist as she tried to stop him choking the life out of her, her knees flailing uselessly to kick him off. That pompous fucking square Arthur. I'd always hated the asshole. Now I finally got to give him exactly what he deserved. I didn't give another warning. I simply moved. My hand reached out, grabbing the back of the bastard's tailored suit and yanked him like a sack of shit, tossing him against the far wall away from her. I'd thrown tires that weighed more than that piece of shit. Charlotte let out a god awful wheeze as her breath came back to her, coughing and gripping her aching throat, her eyes locked onto me like she was trying to work out if I was real or not. The plaster cracked under Arthur's back, his expression stunned as if he couldn't believe someone wasn't scared of him. "I've been waiting for this," I sneered, a murderously dangerous smile curling my lips as my boots thudded against the carpet with dull thuds until I towered over him. "I promised I'd kill you if you ever touched her, asshole." "This is none of your business, you fucking thug." He scowled, defiant and arrogant like he'd always been, opening his mouth to say something else that'd likely just make me kill him quicker, faltering when I grabbed his collar and retching him up the wall until his feet dangled uselessly. "When it comes to her? It's always my business, fucker." I raised a fist, the heat of anger and long awaited violence roared through my veins, ready to beat the life out of the prick. A voice wheezed from behind me through, heavy panting and desperation. "Logan! Stop..." My fist froze, my jaw clenching so tight it hurt, slowly tearing my gaze away from Arthur to look back at Charlotte. She'd sat up, cradling her throat that was red with handprint marks, her eyes wide with fear and her curls spilling around her pale face in a mess of sheer panic. I knew her better than I knew an engine. Even after three years of not seeing her, of not hearing her voice or laughter ringing through the clubhouse like a church bell. I understood the desperate look in her eyes. She wasn't scared for Arthur. Wasn't scared of seeing him get what he had coming. She was terrified of what killing him would do to me. I knew it wouldn't weigh on my soul. It wouldn't make me lose any sleep. Fuck, it'd likely make me sleep better at night knowing he was dead and buried. "Please..." she wheezed, "H-He's too connected..." My jaw worked, the muscle jumping as I digested her words. I knew the asshole had enough money to have buried her location the last 3 years - making it impossible for half the clubhouse to find her, to call her and settle the furious worry her Pops suffered even after she'd cut us off. Anytime we'd got close, the Iron Fangs club would start shit with us - missing cargo, an old fued sparking back up out of nowhere. Police would raid the clubhouse for no reason. Would find a bogus charge they could never pin on us. He'd been using his money to keep us away from her. But one thing was always undeniable. She was still ours. She was mine. "He deserves this, Char," I gritted out, my voice a low, bloodthirsty rumble. My eyes were pinned on her but my grip on Arthur, even as he struggled, didn't loosen. She swallowed hard, like she was swallowing glass. "I know," she whispered, the words dropping like an anchor as she knew it as well as I did. She wasn't stopping me because she didn't think he deserved to die right now. She opened her plush lips, her eyes pleading. "But-" The sound of approaching sirens cut through the air, stopping her words dead as her head whipped towards the door. Police probably called by the receptionist of the motel when she'd seen the argument unfold or when I'd broken down the door. A fresh wave of panic flared in Charlotte's eyes, her chest hitching like she knew as well as I did, that they weren't here to help her. A low growl of pure frustration left my throat. "Dammit." I hissed, gripping Arthur hard enough to tear his shirt. I didn't have time to kill him - not without police being right on our asses. Not without putting her in more danger. I tossed him sideways into the shitty dresser, ignoring his cry out of pain, and turned to face Charlotte. I stepped closer, some of the violence softening in my shoulders as I held out a tattooed hand towards her. "Let's go, Char."- Arthur - The holding cell smelled of floor cleaner, stale sweat, and the distinct, humiliating musk of people who didn’t own stock in anything traded on the NYSE. I sat on the edge of the metal bench, posture straight, shoulders squared under bespoke charcoal wool that now felt less like armor and more like a costume in a bad play. My cufflinks were gone—confiscated during booking alongside my Patek Philippe watch, my phone, my gold-plated money clip, and the dignity of a man who commanded a half-billion-dollar market capitalization before the bell rang at nine-thirty. Incompetent cretins. The phrase wasn't a thought; it was a rhythmic pulse behind my temples. The desk sergeant—a slab of meat with a cheap mustache and fingernails bitten to the quick—had looked at my license as if it belonged to a trespasser trying to pawn a stolen stereo. Arthur Verlaine. Verlaine Corp. Names meant nothing in the Dawn County precinct basement. Power here wasn't measured in diluted share optio
- Logan -The neon sign of the Siren’s Gaze flickered against the damp, miserable evening air, casting a sickly pink glow over the cracked asphalt of the strip club's parking lot.I killed the engine of my bike, letting the Harley's heavy thrum die down into a quiet ticking as it cooled, setting my red and black helmet on the handles. Pulling the folded envelope out of my jacket pocket, I scanned the address one last time. I knew Leo Tannis - he was a piece of shit, owner of a strip club and had hired us to help him move product and act as protection when he made shitty deals. Twelve hours late on a protection payment wasn't just bad business; it was an invitation to remind the local slime why the Vipers controlled this territory. I adjusted my cut, flexing my bandaged left hand to check the stitching still held, and walked across the near-empty carpack. Gravel crunched under my boots, my eyes scanning the area quickly like a predator sweeping its hunting ground. I didn't both
- Charlotte -The heavy scent of roasted coffee beans, whiskey and faint cigar smoke hit my senses as Nellie guided me through the swinging double doors toward the club’s private lounge. It was a stark contrast to the sterile, monochromatic white and grey minimalism of Arthur’s penthouse. Here, the walls were dark timber paneling adorned with vintage Vipers memorabilia, old black-and-white charter photos, and a massive stone fireplace that wasn't even lit yet. A plush, worn leather sofa and mismatched armchairs sat in the center, currently occupied by three women who commanded the space just as fiercely as the men commanded the compound."Look what the cat dragged back in," Nellie announced, a fond, bright grin lighting up her face as she nudged me forward. All three pairs of eyes snapped up to me.There was Sarah, the club’s treasurer, Bones’ fierce right-hand and his younger sister, whose sharp bob and piercing dark eyes missed nothing. Beside her sat Maeve, a younger woman with a c
- Logan - The heavy oak conference doors clicked shut as Nellie gently steered Charlotte out by the elbow, taking her down toward the main bar to spend some time with some of the club's Old Ladies and members before the legal storm officially hit. I watched the door latch closed, my chest still burning with the residual heat of seeing that video replay on the monitor. "She's holding it together better than most would," Gwen Cassidy noted, sliding her sleek silver laptop back into its leather case with a crisp snap. She adjusted her glasses, looking across the mahogany table at Prez and Bones before her sharp, analytical eyes landed on me. "Which means the delayed crash is going to hit her like a freight train if we don't keep her occupied and protected." "She's a Kane," Prez rumbled, his voice low and firm, though his jaw twitched with the same violent restraint I was fighting. "She's tougher than she looks. But you're right—we make sure she doesn't have a second to look bac
Nellie led me back to the room, her arm wrapped gently around my shoulders as we stepped inside the quiet room. "I pulled out some of your old gear," she said softly, gesturing to the stack of clothes folded on the edge of the bed. "Hopefully they still fit." I stepped forward, my hand brushing against the soft fabric of a worn navy green henley and faded jeans, a pair of old boots and a black bra and panty set that looked brand new. I cast a glance back at her, raising a questioning brow. She smirked, leaning against the closed door. "I assumed you didn't have any, so I asked Margie, the bartender I have on weekends, drop some stuff off. Girl's a lingerie model and gets given a heap of free shit all the time, and she's about your size, so they should work." She explained. A small, grateful smile pulled at my lips, my chest tightening a little at the helpfulness of a woman I'd never met. "I'll have to thank her when I meet her," I said quietly, picking up the pile and heading fo
Logan had retreated to the corner island, eating quietly while he watched Nellie and I move around in a rhythm born from years of cooking and caring together. Our shoulders brushed as I made sure the burritos stayed warm and Nellie cleaned up after me despite my protest. "You cooked, I clean," she said stubbornly, shoving a burrito and cup of coffee into my hands when I still tried to help, slapping me gently on the side of the leg with a laugh. "Fuck off, Char-Char. Go sit down next to Logan and make sure he doesn't choke on his food," she ordered. I dodged her next swipe, "Fine! I'm going, I'm going!" I chuckled, sliding into the seat next to Logan who was hiding his smirk behind his second burrito. "She's a hard-ass," he teased quietly to me. "She doesn't let anyone cook in her kitchen." Nellie snorted. "Correction - I don't let you cook in my kitchen, Reap," she shot over her shoulder as she washed dishes by hand. "You burn water." "Hey, that's a lie. I can cook!"
