The heavy stone balustrade of the Vodell castle high balcony was slick with damp, evening moisture.

Lord Phileo Vodell stood alone against the biting wind, his massive chest broad beneath his velvet coat, staring out into the vast, suffocating thicket of Marston Forest looming on the horizon. To the rest of the kingdom, it was an ancient sanctuary of magic. To Phileo, it was a festering, unholy sore on the land—a dark expanse crawling with foul, unnatural beasts that breathed the very air he was forced to share. His skin crawled at the thought of them.

Thick, oppressive darkness had already settled over the valley when the iron gates groaned open below.

A ragged cavalry unit rode into the courtyard, their horses exhausted, carrying the bodies of the men who had ridden out under Kado’s command earlier that morning. Phileo’s eldest son, Kado, was slung limply over his mount, his eyes closed tight, his body shuddering under a cold, feverish sweat.

Footsteps echoed sharply along the stone balcony behind him. Soulus stepped into the torchlight, his face pale and grim.

"Father," Soulus said, his voice unusually tight. "The vanguard has returned. We found them dumped near the river border... like discarded meat. We’ve tried everything—smelling salts, holy water, physical pain—but nothing is working. They're trapped inside their own heads."

Phileo slowly turned around. A dark, sinister smile curled his thick lips, his eyes dancing with an evil, twisted amusement.

"Trapped, are they?" Phileo murmured softly, a deep rumble vibrating in his chest. "How wonderfully reckless of that beast. They think to intimidate us, yet they have handed us the very key to their annihilation."

"Father?" Soulus frowned, tilting his head. "Kado is unresponsive. His pulse is failing."

"Kado is serving his family," Phileo corrected sharply, stepping past his son into the interior corridor. "This is the very catalyst we needed. A direct, unprovoked attack on the nobility. A glorious reason to demand the King's full military support. The war has finally begun."

As they marched down the wide, cold hallways of the east wing, loud, sorrowful cries resonated from the private quarters. The wives and mothers of the fallen soldiers huddled together in panic, their weeping echoing off the high stone arches.

Phina Vodell burst through the doors of Kado’s chamber, her hair disheveled, her face streaked with raw, desperate tears. She caught sight of her husband and threw herself toward him, grabbing the lapels of his heavy cloak.

"Phileo, please!" Phina sobbed out, her voice trembling violently. "What is happening to our boy? He won't wake up! His skin is turning to ice! We should never have sent them into that terrible forest!"

Phileo looked down at his wife with cold, utter disdain. He didn't offer a single word of comfort. He simply reached down, peeled her trembling hands off his cloak with ruthless force, and rolled his eyes away from her tear-stained face.

"Get out of my way, woman," he growled low, stepping past her without a backward glance.

Phina fell back against the wall, clutching her chest as her sobs filled the corridor. Phileo marched deeper into the castle, his iron-shod boots clicking rhythmically against the floorboards. Soulus fell into step right behind him.

"Prepare my horses," Phileo commanded, his voice devoid of a single drop of paternal grief. "We ride to the royal capital at first light. This is going to be a wonderful turning point for House Vodell."

The cold morning mist clung heavy and damp to the stone battlements as the heavy iron gates of the castle groaned open at dawn.

Phileo Vodell sat tall atop his massive black stallion. His chest was clad in gleaming silver plate armor, his face set in a hard, merciless stone mask completely devoid of the grief a father ought to feel for his dying son. Beside him rode Soulus and Daen, their expressions grim, their longswords and heavy axes strapped tightly to their saddles.

Behind them, deep within the quiet walls of the castle, Kado lay motionless on a cold stone bed. Beneath his closed eyelids, his eyes darted frantically back and forth, trapped in the horrific, endless nightmare woven by the Púca lord. His breathing was shallow, his heart stuttering in a slow, agonizing rhythm as Malakai’s dark magic slowly drained the life force from his veins.

Phina had spent the night weeping beside his bed, holding her eldest son's icy fingers, begging Phileo to stay and find a healer. But the patriarch had only sneered at her despair. To Phileo, Kado’s decaying body was not a tragedy—it was the single most persuasive piece of evidence he could ever bring before the Crown.

"Let him fade," Phileo had whispered coldly to Soulus in the courtyard before mounting his horse. "The closer Kado draws to his grave, the more blood the King will demand from that forest."

The journey to the central capital of the Sivkraeis Kingdom took a full day of hard, relentless riding across the stony plains.

When they finally arrived, the cobblestone streets of the capital were bustling with merchant carts, noble carriages, and common folk. But as the dark-armored procession of House Vodell thundered through the main gates, the crowds parted in terrified silence. The sheer, suffocating aura of dark, furious purpose radiating from the three men warned everyone to stay clear.

Phileo did not pause to rest at his family's city estate. He rode his sweat-slick stallion directly up the sweeping stone stairs of the royal citadel, where the grand, sky-scraping spires of King Adamas’s throne loomed dark against the grey, overcast sky.

Inside the Chamber of Nobles, the air was thick with the scent of burning beeswax candles, old parchment, and wine.

The heavy oak doors of the royal council room slammed open with a deafening bang, splintering against the stone walls.

King Adamas, an aging but sharp-eyed monarch whose gray beard was trimmed with military precision, sat at the head of a massive mahogany table. Surrounding him were his cabinet of high advisors, noble dukes, and military commanders.

"Phileo?" King Adamas boomed, rising slightly from his cushioned seat, his brow furrowing in instant displeasure. "You enter my private council unannounced, fully armed, and covered in the dust of the road? Explain yourself at once!"

"I come to demand justice, Your Grace!" Phileo’s voice roared through the vaulted chamber like a thunderclap.

He strode aggressively to the center of the room, his heavy steel gauntlet slamming down onto the polished mahogany table with enough force to rattle the crystal goblets. With his other hand, he pulled a black velvet pouch from his belt and hurled it onto the wood.

The pouch burst open. Out rolled the broken, snapped shaft of the massive obsidian Púca feather, shimmering with a lingering, dark residue. Beside it, Phileo tossed a official medical scroll signed by the house apothecary, detailing Kado's decaying, magic-induced coma.

"The peace treaty is dead!" Phileo snarled, his golden-flecked eyes wild with calculated fury. "The beasts of Marston Forest have crossed our borders! They have kidnapped my only daughter, Leia! And when my eldest son rode to investigate, they laid an unholy curse upon him! He lies on his deathbed at this very second!"

A collective gasp swept through the cabinet. A violent, chaotic murmur of shock and alarm rippled across the long table.

"This is an outrage!" Duke Vane shouted, slamming his fist down as he stood up, his face red with indignation. "If those wild shapeshifters are taking highborn noble daughters hostage and cursing our military commanders, they are preparing for war! We must deploy the royal vanguard immediately!"

"We must burn that cursed forest down to the ash!" Soulus added, stepping into the chamber behind his father, his hand resting heavily on the hilt of his broadsword.

"Hold your tongue, young man!" a calm, authoritative voice cut in.

Lord Aaron, an elderly, silver-haired diplomat who had spent his youth drafting the original peace accords with the supernatural clans, stood up across the table. He glared at Phileo with deep, long-standing suspicion.

"Calm yourselves, all of you!" Aaron urged, turning to the King. "We have lived in absolute peace with the forest boundary for over thirty years! Phileo, your deep-seated hatred for the supernatural is well known throughout this court. How do we know your daughter was truly kidnapped? How do we know the girl did not simply flee your house on her own accord to escape your brutal hand?"

Phileo’s posture went terrifyingly rigid. His eyes flared with a lethal, simmering rage as he stepped toward the elderly diplomat.

"Are you daring to call me a liar in front of my King, Aaron?" Phileo hissed, his voice dropping into a raspy, dangerous whisper. "Look at the scroll! Look at the feather! My son’s men were dragged back to our border like dogs by the dark magic of that woods! Kado is dying! If we sit here and debate like cowards, we show those creatures that humanity is weak and ripe for slaughter!"

The chamber instantly erupted into a chaotic, screaming match. Nobles stood up on their chairs, some banging their rings against the table demanding immediate blood and fire, while older councilors pleaded for diplomatic restraint and investigation.

"Enough!"

King Adamas’s voice echoed like a iron cannon shot, cutting through the deafening noise instantly.

The entire council fell dead silent. The nobles slowly sank back into their seats, holding their breath.

The King pinched the bridge of his nose, leaning back into his high throne. His sharp, experienced eyes drifted between the snapped black feather resting on the table and the hungry, vicious expression burning on Phileo’s face. Adamas was no fool. He knew Phileo had wanted an excuse to wipe out the forest for decades. Yet, the evidence of magical aggression against a high noble family could not be ignored.

"I will not send ten thousand human soldiers to die in a magical forest based on a broken feather and an unverified claim," King Adamas decreed, his voice cold, steady, and absolute.

Phileo’s jaw clenched so hard his cheek bones bulged. "Your Grace—"

"Silence, Phileo," the King commanded, raising a single stern hand. "I recognize the gravity of this situation. Your son’s condition is dire, and your daughter’s disappearance must be answered for. Therefore, hear my decree."

The nobles leaned forward, hanging on every word.

King Adamas locked his piercing gaze directly onto Phileo's golden eyes. "We will first send a formal royal envoy to the border of Marston Forest, flanked by two hundred paladins of the royal guard."

"A messenger?!" Soulus spat out in disbelief, but a sharp glance from his father silenced him.

"The envoy will demand a formal audience with the leader of the Púca," King Adamas continued, his voice echoing with undisputed authority. "They will demand the immediate, safe return of Leia Vodell, and they will demand the exact counter-magic cure for your son's condition. If the creatures refuse to negotiate..." The King's eyes hardened into cold steel. "...or if they dare harm a single hair on my messengers' heads, then, and only then, will the entire military might of the Sivkraeis Kingdom march to tear that forest down root by root. You have my word."

Phileo stood in the center of the grand chamber, his broad chest rising and falling slowly.

Gradually, a cold, sinister triumph settled deep within his bones. The King’s "peaceful solution" was not a setback—it was the ultimate trap.

Phileo knew the nature of the wild beasts far better than anyone in this room. They were fiercely territorial, ancient, arrogant, and ruthless—especially the powerful shadow master who had claimed Leia as his own. A grand human envoy showing up at their border with armed paladins making demands would be seen as an intolerable insult. The beast would slaughter the messengers the moment they stepped across the line.

"As you wish, Your Grace," Phileo said smoothly, bending his head into a deep, sweeping bow to hide the dark, evil smile spreading across his face. "Let us send the messengers. And let the beasts seal their own doom."

The pale morning sun leaked softly through the cabin window, cutting through the fading shadows of the night. On the massive bed, wrapped securely in the furnace-like warmth of Malakai’s arms, Leia woke up to a strange, intoxicating heat spreading beneath her skin. Over the last few days, her transformation had been rapid, almost breathtakingly steady. The human fragility she had carried her entire life was completely dissolving. Her senses were sharp enough to hear the faint, rhythmic heartbeat of the forest outside, her hair carried a gloss like obsidian feathers, and beneath her fingernails, dark, razor-sharp claws could now extend and retract at her lightest command. She was shedding her human skin, growing rapidly into a full-blooded Púca. Malakai lay awake beside her, his golden eyes glowing in the dim morning light with a quiet, profound pride. Instead, he slipped through a hidden tapestry lined with heavy black velvet, stepping into his small, private study—a secluded sanctuary of flickering candlelight, dust-manned maps, and absolute, quiet secrecy.Lord Aaron followed closely behind, pulling the thick, reinforced oak door shut to deaden the lingering echoes of the shouting nobles still arguing in the hallway outside. The King marched straight to a crystal decanter resting on his mahogany desk, his hands trembling slightly with a volatile mixture of suppressed rage and profound, bone-deep exhaustion as he unstoppered the glass. He poured two heavy cups of amber wine. He didn't offer a royal toast

The morning air of Marston Forest was thick with damp earth, wet pine needles, and the lingering residue of ancient magic.Leia surged through the undergrowth, her dark-furred body cutting through the ferns like a shadow. At first, she moved with the hesitation of someone wearing an unfamiliar skin—her mind still bound by the rigid, calculating instincts of a human who had been trained to tread lightly and avoid detection. But as she ran beside Malakai, the vast, living heartbeat of the forest seeped into her blood.Under his unspoken telepathic guidance, the forest ceased to be a dangerous, alien maze and became her playground. Her senses sharpened to a terrifying, magnificent degree. The crackle of the fireplace filled the quiet cabin, casting warm, dancing orange light across the cedar logs. Leia finished the last bite of her porridge, the sweet mixture of honey, berries, and grain sinking into her stomach. A deep, revitalizing nourishment spread through her veins, soothing the raw, internal ache that had lingered since her first violent transformation on the forest floor. From his spot near the hearth, Malakai watched her with an unyielding intensity that made her pulse quicken. His large, broad-shouldered frame cast a long, protective shadow clear across the room, completely shielding her from the dark window panes. When she placed the empty wooden bowl onto the side table, her eyelids grew impossibly heavy. The severe physical toll of her partial shift, combined with the lingering trauma of her brothers' cruelty and her frantic escape through the freezing river, finally caught up to her exhausted body."Sleep, little changeling," Malakai’s velvety voice ech
