Chapter 65

Jade's expression was grim when we made our way to the forecourt of the packhouse. I felt invisible by the crowd waiting in the courtyard. My little hands were quite lost inside Jade's big ones, as he held me protectively. I could feel his heart aching. The loss had embittered him. In a time like this, he exhumed a cold aura that shut me out from asking him any questions.

Duke had gone to open the underground safe house, letting out the women and children. The smiles on their faces were priceless. I detangled my hands from Jades' when a little body hugged me from the back. I turned around to face her.

"How are you, Tatiana?" I was instantly filled with excitement at the sight of the little girl. She was radiant and bloomed with smiles.

"I'm fine, Auntie Isabella. Where is Papa?" She asked excitedly.

I met her with the same level of excitement. "Your papa is helping to take care of some injured people," I said to her but she seemed rather placid.
