CHAPTER 4

“Well it’s about damn time.” She told her reflection. That was odd but at the same time very helpful. I think it’s time I talked to Kar. I miss him and well, Aeden said if he’s anything like Dean he’ll love me no matter what. Now to find something to wear.

As Lex went through her clothes she didn’t hear the voices downstairs. Or the footsteps coming towards her room. Just as she was done washing she heard the light knock on her door. She called, to who she thought was her mother, to let her know she was dressing and would be out in a minute. The voice that responded startled Lex so much that she tripped and fell onto her bed with a very loud thump and a torrent of laughter.

“Hey! Lex are you ok?” Kar asked.

“Yes Kar, I’m fine. NO, don’t come in I’m not dressed yet!” Lex said.

“Sorry. You’re sure you’re fine?” Kar asked.

“Yes. Just give me a minute.” She giggled.

Kar paced as he waited very impatiently for Lex to get dressed. He was rather surprised that she hadn’t told him to go away yet. That’s what she usually did when they were fighting. But he had probably caught her off guard. He didn’t usually come over so early. And he almost always woke her up when he did.

Lost in thought, and his pacing, Kar didn’t notice when Lex opened her door. So, she just watched him. And waited for him to see her. It took a few minutes. It wasn’t until he went back to knock on her door again that he saw her standing there watching him. She had an amused look on her face and as he continued to gape at her he noticed that her eyes and core were the brightest he’d seen them in a month. Though they were still too dull for him to not worry.

“Hi, Kar.” Lex said.

“Uh, um (gulp) hi Lex.” Kar said.

“What are you doing here so early? Not that I mind, I’m just used to you coming over here later.” Lex stammered.

“I, uh, I’m here cause, uh, you look really nice Lex. Were you on your way somewhere?” Kar asked.

“Actually, yes and thank you. But you didn’t answer my question.” Lex said.

“Well, um, I’m sorry to get in your way but I was talking to my mom about our fight and I mentioned that your eyes and core have been dulling and she insisted that we come over here first thing in the morning. She’s downstairs with your mom.” Kar explained sheepishly.

“Really Kar! You told your mom knowing that she’s not only Queen but my mom’s best friend?” Lex demanded.

“Sorry. It just kinda came out. And I wasn’t thinking about her being The Queen or friends with your mom. I was just trying to talk to My Mom about my best friend, who’s a girl, and what I could do to fix things so we weren’t fighting anymore.” Kar said exasperated.

“Stupid! Stupid! Boy! Whatever, let’s go downstairs. I’m not gonna keep them waiting.” Lex said with a huff.

So, they went downstairs. Kar’s core was a dark blue and Lex’s was almost black. A definite sign that both of them were upset and had been fighting. Had their mothers not heard them they would have known just by looking at them. Which neither was happy about. While the kids were arguing Shex and Mera had been talking about Karsix sending away all of his potential life mates. Mera had suspected it had something to do with Alexis but couldn’t be sure if it was love or concern. Shex had made it clear that it was love and Mera had made it clear that Alexis felt the same way. Now all they had to do was get the kids to be friends again and get Alexis better and they were sure things would go from there without their interference. At the moment both of those things looked to be almost impossible.

As Shexis studied Lex she noticed the beautiful girl was quite angry. Which meant her energy would drain more quickly. But she also noticed that Lex was holding herself differently than usual. She was standing at her full height, her eyes were clear, although black as a moonless night, and she had a look of defiance. Alexis rarely wore that look unless someone had done something to deserve it. It also meant that she wasn’t going to hold her temper or comments back. She was going to be difficult but truthful. Well this will certainly be interesting; Shexis thought to herself and knew Mera was thinking the same thing.

“Good morning Alexis.” Shex and Mera said.

“Good morning Queen, Mother.” Lex said.

“Please don’t be so formal Lex. I’m here as Shex your mothers best friend not The Queen.” Shexis said.

“OK Shex, then why are you, mom, and Kar here?” Lex asked between clenched teeth.

“Please honey, calm down just a little. We’re concerned about you that’s all.” Mera interjected before Shex could say anything.

“You’re moms right. We are all just concerned that your lack of sleep is becoming dangerous to your health.” She said in a calming motherly way, hoping to bring Alexis’ anger down a bit.

“And that’s all? You’re not going to interfere with the fight Kar and I are having, are you?” Lex asked as she sat down.

“I told you Lex, that my mom just wants to help with your energy and that’s all.” Kar grumbled.

At the sound of Kars tone Lex’s head snapped up and she had turned narrowed eyes on him. He knew that look very well. She, unlike, any other female was the only one who would ever dare look at The Prince of Haven that way and not care about the consequences. This was just the tip of her anger though and Karsix was well aware of the storm that was brewing in Lex at the moment.

“Hun, I can speak for myself. But Karsix is right Alexis. I’m only here out of concern for your energy level.” Shex said hoping that Alexis wouldn’t blow up at Karsix.

“Fine. I’m losing sleep because I’ve been having very vivid dreams that seem real.” Lex clamped her mouth shut as soon as she realized what she had said.

“I see, and how long have you been having these dreams?” Shex asked, keeping her expression neutral.

“About a month and a half. At first, they were just normal dreams that came and went. I didn’t start losing sleep until they got more lifelike, about two weeks after they started.” Lex said, deciding that she might as well give as much information about the dreams as she could. Of course, she’d leave the conversation she had with Aeden out.

“So, it’s just dreams?” Kar asked.

“Yea, just dreams. What did you think it was?” Lex glared at Kar as she asked.

Mera just watched her daughter, as everyone talked. She had known Lex was special but she hadn’t thought about it much. She figured it would show in time and she was right. When Alexis was first created and formed she had already created a boy and girl. Nothing had been different about them. And nothing had been different about the younger children either. Alexis was the second of 3 girls and third of 5 kids. The middle child in every way. She was also the quietest of all Mera’s kids and the most stubborn. The worst temper but the most understanding person Mera had ever known. A contradiction in almost every way but still sweet. Shexis had pleaded with Ameratix to come live within the palace walls before any of her kids were created. After all, Ameratix and Faradex were technically royalty. Both of their fathers had been princes who renounced their crowns to live normal lives. So, it was only logical that they reclaim their right as royals. Although only the eldest of her children knew. Not even Karsix knew and no one ever talked about it. If a royal renounced his position it was the law that no one speak of what had been. So, Alexis had no idea that she was not only royalty but also a special part of the royal line. It had something to do with the founders of their world. Mera and Shex were only starting to find pieces of the Beginnings of Haven which meant they didn’t have much to tell Lex about herself. But they knew enough to recognize what the dreams meant.

“What do you mean?” Lex asked.

“Nothing. I just thought maybe you were trying to hide something bigger or more than just dreams from me.” Kar said.

“Ya know I haven’t actually hidden anything from you. I told you I was having trouble sleeping. You never asked why.” Lex pointed out.

“OK, ok you two. Let’s get back to the problem at hand.” Shex said.

“Alexis! Stop yelling at Karsix. He has done nothing but worry about you since all this started.” Mera spoke for the first time since trying to calm Lex.

“Whatever!” Lex bit the word.

“All right, everybody calm down. Maybe that’s enough for today.” Shex gave Mera a questioning glance. Mera gave the answering glance Shex had expected.

“Now I know that this was not what you expected this morning and Lex that you didn’t get dressed up for me.” Shex said.

“No, I didn’t.” Lex said and let out a sigh.

“Then your mother and I shall leave you to do what you had originally planned.” Shex said. And she and Mera stood and left the house leaving Karsix and Alexis sitting there together.

Lex didn’t know what to do. She had gotten dressed to see Karsix. Then he was there, and like a stupid boy he opened his mouth and ruined everything. Now what was she supposed to do? She was tired again and still angry with Kar. At that moment she wanted only 2 things; to yell at Karsix and to be cradled in his arms so she could sleep.

Looking at Lex, Kar thought to himself. So, it’s just dreams. She can’t sleep because she’s having lifelike dreams she can’t tell me about. Well I guess it was just something she needed to deal with herself. But now what? She’s more pissed at me now than she ever was. And I can’t tell her the real reason I was talking to my mom about our fight. She’d probably scream at me.

So, they just sat there. Lost in thought and occasionally stealing glances at each other. The silence went on and on until Lex let out a huge sigh. Kar had his full attention on her now. He could see that she was almost completely calm now. So, he figured it was about time he spoke.

“I really am sorry.” He said.

“I was coming to see you this morning; but I can’t remember why now.” She definitely remembered why.

“Oh. I don’t want to fight anymore Lex. I know that doesn’t fix things. I just, after I talked to my mom I realized that you’re not going to tell me everything all the time. And I just have to respect that. So, do you want to go back to my house and watch the stars?” Kar finished and held his breathe hoping Lex would except.

“If it will shut you up and get me out of the house, then yes.” Lex said with a smile.

“OK, you got it. No more talking. Let’s go.” Kar said.

As they walked in silence Lex relaxed a little more. She was happy to not be fighting anymore. She knew how badly it drained her energy. But she was sure that she would sleep tonight. And now Kar knew she was having some crazy dreams so there was nothing to worry about. Maybe getting Shex and her mom involved was a good thing.

Maybe Lex would sleep on the roof like always. She needs it. And if she has one of those weird dreams I’ll wake her up so she can fall back to sleep like normal. Only one dream a night. Telling mom was a good idea. At least I know I’m not the only one.
