The Ties that Bind Us

The night was dark and stormy. The high winds could be heard all around the van that was rushing towards the hospital as fast as it could. The sounds of the sirens were howling through the air. It was the only thing that might be heard over the storm that was over the area.

In the van where the paramedics that worked together were trying to figure out what exactly they could do for the woman on the stretcher. She was writhing in pain on the stretcher to the point they were thinking about adding extra straps to keep her down and immobile. Jade Winchester had never felt pain like this in her life. The baby she was carrying was not due for a few weeks however either the storm brough on the early labor or something else did.

Her father’s wife, the evil step-mother, she had grown to hate was with her. Though she had tried to have them leave her behind knowing that she would make everything worse for Jade. Was sitting there looking at the girl with a pure hatred in her eyes. “Oh my god, Jade. Please calm down. The way you are carrying on is atrocious.” Diane said as she looked at her step daughter. The look she was giving her said it all. IT didn’t matter that the girl was in pain. She wanted her to be quiet and suck up the pain like it was nothing.

“Ma’am it is actually encouraged to help with labor for woman to make noise.” One of the paramedics said as they looked at the woman who they thought would be there to comfort her daughter or in this case step-daughter. She had not said or done one thing though that seemed to prove that she cared for the girl on the bed.

“Oh pish posh.” The woman waved off the comment. “She needs to remember who she is. It is bad enough that she ended up this way with no idea who the baby’s father is but she doesn’t need to make a show of it. She can do everything just fine without drawing attention to herself.”

The paramedics turned their eyes back to their patient and continued to try to rise her falling vitals. Nothing about this was right the paramedics knew. They would have to warn the doctors about what they thought. They both looked at the woman who was calming texting someone as they were pulling up in the entryway for the emergency department. When the doors opened the woman stood up and then blocked the people standing there to help Jad who was still screaming but she was getting weaker by the moment.

Diane took her time getting down much to the annoyance of everyone standing there that could see how entailed this woman was. When she finally made it to the ground from the stairs that were there the team grabbed the stretcher and began to run into the building to start doing whatever they had too for the young girl. The EMT’s were giving the rundown on everything that was done on the way from their mansion to the hospital.

The nurses were adding lines for IV fluid and the doctor was watching the monitoring equipment for the unborn baby. “She needs to go up to the operating room. She needs to have this baby by c-section right now.” The doctor stated and they began to move her again. Diane was there in the room again almost blocking the door.

“Are you sure? She really doesn’t need any extra treatment.” Diane said as she looked at the doctors. “Can she tried to have the baby a little more normally?”

“Ma’am your daughter is going to die if she doesn’t deliver right now.” The doctor said.

“Step-daughter.” Diane responded.

“Well I honestly don’t care what she is to you. My job is to save her life.” the doctor said as he lead the stretcher to the elevator. “I suggest you call her father and ger him here.”

Dian sighed as she looked at the girl who was screaming still. There was nothing but hatred in her eyes as they rested on the girl. “Well at least give her something to make her be quiet! She is drawing to much attention to herself.” She said as she looked at the doctor and he saw the hatred in the older woman’s face. The EMT’s had something to him about the way they had interacted in the van on the ride there to the hospital.

When they got in the elevator he looked at the head nurse., Run her blood test for anything abnormal.”

“Yes sir.” She said as she went ahead and began to collect the vials that she would have run to see what was going on. Even she thought something might have happened to the young girl.

The nurse looked down at the girl and then held her hand. “It is okay sweetheart. Soon everything will be fine. I promise.”

“Just save my baby.” Jade ground out through a wave of pain. “He is the important thing here.”

Jade was watching as the lights on the ceiling seemed to be merging into one as they rushed her to the operating room. She was in so much pain but she knew where she was. The smell of the hospital that was cleanness and slightly chemically. The white walls and the tiled ceiling were all things she knew well from her time volunteering here when she was younger. She knew that she was in the place that could save her baby.

Though the pain was going through her in waves of feeling like she was being ripped apart from the inside out. She was hanging on to being able to stay awake with just a thread. Though when she entered the operating room though she could feel the wave of pain start and then there was nothing but blackness that surrounded her.
