Ember
I startle awake a few hours later. I feel the slip of silk sheets beneath me and scent the faint smell of pine and leather. Prince Kaine. Bile rises in my throat as what transpired the night before rushes back to me. I force myself to take a deep breath, willing my panic to subside as I sit up and begin to take stock of my surroundings.
The room around me is huge, yet simple. The moss-green walls are barren of decoration save for a single portrait of children playing, and the furniture is a simple, sturdy oak.
To the right is a door, slightly propped open, revealing a closet, and to the left is a door that must lead to the bathroom. In the front corner of the room is the set of stairs that led me to this mess. The most extravagant thing in the room is the sturdy four-poster bed that I find myself in and the luxurious bedding on top.
In my haze, I must have unknowingly wandered into the palace last night. I peer out the window and see the sun beginning to rise. Shit, I have to get out of here.
Prince Kaine snores atop the enormous bed, swathed in silk. He looks… peaceful, like he does not share my reservations about our Mate bond. That is odd, given what I know of him and his history with women, and I can’t help but spare him another glance as I try to quiet my breath.
I should be more afraid of him. The realization hits me like a ton of bricks, and I quickly shake myself out of it. This is the bond putting me at ease.
I will not fall for that trick. I need to go. Nara grumbles as I slowly inch my way to the side of the bed and slip out, careful not to disturb Prince Kaine.
“We should stay.”
I know he’s your Mate too, but he is also Prince Kaine. He’ll reject our Mate bond, and I’ll lose you forever. This is our third Mate—I can’t risk it.
I feel Nara’s discontent, but for now she doesn’t push it further. If we are rejected again, the Moon Goddess will revoke her blessing and take my Wolf in the process. Furthermore, I am a warrior.
Even if Prince Kaine decides to honor our Mate bond, I would feel trapped living out domestic life as some princess Luna. No. I will hide our Mate bond. I will not abandon my goals. I will not lose Nara.
After our encounter, Prince Kaine and I were exhausted from the effort it takes to solidify the Mate bond, but as I passed out, I did my best to hide my face. All I can do is hope that it was enough. It won’t be easy, but I have to keep our bond a secret—from him and everyone else.
I will myself not to breathe as I creep across the room and up the stairs. I barely have time to process the part of the palace I’m in before I am out the door and flying down the path to my car. I sit for a moment, panting, before putting the car in gear and speeding toward home.
I turn off my lights before pulling into the driveway and carefully shut my car door as I get out. My feet crunch against the gravel as I continue to the door, and I will my feet to tread more silently.
I slip into the house, shutting the door quietly behind me, and begin creeping my way toward my room.
“Why were you out so late?”
Shit. Bianca stands in the middle of the hallway, her trademark smirk firmly in place.
My heart hammers in surprise at being caught, and my voice flies to my throat as I scramble for a lie.
“I was on patrol,” I squeak out the half-truth quickly, ashamed at having been caught.
“Your patrol would have ended hours ago,” Bianca snaps, rolling her eyes.
“I had to cover for someone. Bianca, please… I am exhausted.”
“Whatever,” Bianca frowns, her eyes narrowing in suspicion. “Have you seen my necklace? I can’t find it.”
I sigh, eager to get past Bianca and safely into my room.
“No, I haven’t seen it. You should be more careful with it.”
I push past Bianca and quickly make my way to my room, sliding down the door with relief as my hand travels up to feel the matching necklace around my own neck—an heirloom from our mother. Another wave of panic washes over me. What if I left it in Prince Kaine’s room?
No. I just need to take my own advice and be more careful. It’s probably in my room somewhere, or maybe it fell off during training.
Kaine
I found her—my Mate. I sit up and look around, confused by the emptiness of my bed. Irritation flares as my Wolf, Rafe, paces, feeling the loss. Where could she be? I take a deep breath, calming my temper as I spot a necklace left behind on the pillow.
The necklace is simple, a pearl pendant on a small golden chain. Did my Mate leave it here on purpose? Why did she leave?
Rafe howls as he surges to the surface, and I fight to stay in control. His anger is my anger, his loss my loss. Was this some sort of trick—or maybe a parting gift?
I struggle as I try to picture the woman from last night. I find it hard to remain in control when my emotions are at the surface, and last night my Wolf had taken over, overwhelmed by the presence of our Mate. Still, I should have gotten a better look at her face.
My heart aches as another thought occurs to me. Maybe she was frightened. I’ve heard the rumors going around the pack.
They say that I kill any woman unlucky enough to find her way into my bed. The reality is that those women were spies, but despite this, I have a reputation.
Another, crueler voice in the back of my head wonders if she simply did not want me. I shove the thought aside. I am an Alpha.
“We must find our Mate,” Rafe barks in my head, and I stand—spurred to action.
When I arrive upstairs, several men are already there awaiting my arrival. I nod briefly at my Beta, Jake, before turning to another one of my men with a command.
“Aaron, I need a list of every woman who entered the palace last night.”
“Yes, Alpha,” Aaron replies and begins to walk away.
Jake gives me a questioning look. “Another spy? If one got away, we need more than a list. We need to send out patrols to find her.”
The concern in my Beta’s eyes is evident, but I cannot bring myself to tell him that my Mate fled. I refuse to look like an embarrassment. My temper flares.
“Do you question my judgment?”
My Beta looks down, showing his neck as a sign of submission. “No, Alpha. I’m sorry.”
“Good. I will hear no more of it. Now, go help Aaron with the list. It’s important.”
The Captain of the Guard freezes before he can grab my arm, shocked at Prince Kaine’s declaration. “You’re… protecting the mole?” He asked, stunned.A murmur goes through the crowd, everyone else appearing as shocked about Prince Kaine’s demands as the captain is. Prince Kaine has a reputation for showing no mercy to traitors, and now he is giving me a private audience. There is a beat, but no one leaves, reluctant to believe me innocent or to miss any drama.Prince Kaine’s gaze sweeps across the room giving nothing away. “Did you not hear me?” I said, “get out.” His demand is met by a rush of movement as most of the guards file out of the room, but the captain and a few onlookers remain, eager to see what happens next. The captain eyes me, pure hatred shining from his dark pupils. The captain turns at Prince Kaine, a determined look in his eyes and he pushes, “The evidence is right in front of us. Just being exiled is already the lightest punishment for a traitor. Your Highness, this
I watch Prince Kaine as he addresses another attendant. “Bring out the items I have prepared.”The attendant looks at me for a moment, shocked but quickly catches himself and smiles at me. “Yes, of course.”He’s gone for a moment before striding back to the front of the shop an array of items in hand. As he brings the items out, he also starts to gush, “These really look stunning on someone as beautiful as you. I think a few of these pieces in particular will complement your refined aura.”I blink at him, confused and he continues, “You two make such a lovely couple. I am so thrilled to see the Crown Prince happy! We have prepared only the finest gifts in the entire kingdom for you to enjoy.”It takes me a moment, but I finally understand, the attendant thinks that I am Prince Kaine’s fiancée. I glance at Prince Kaine to see if he is going to say anything, but he just stands there, his expression unreadable.I look back to the attendant, feeling awkward, to clarify, “Oh um... I’m just
Kaine took a deep, steadying breath before walking back into the event. He was trying his best to act as if everything was fine, but he couldn’t shake the uneasy feeling his revelation had left him with. From across the room his half-brother Jasper smirked as he called out “Everything okay, big brother? You seem… distracted.”Kaine scowled at Jasper, but didn’t reply as he made his way back toward Bianca, who smiled reassuringly at him. “Is everything alright?” Bianca had seen Ember’s exit and was upset that Kaine had followed her but was trying not to let her jealousy show.“It’s fine,” Kaine snapped, a little more harshly than he intended before fixing his tone. “Sorry yes, Ember looked like she was going to pass out. I didn’t want to upset you, so I went to check on her myself.”Kaine took a deep breath before leading Bianca over to meet his father, and stepmother. Kaine had needed a few minutes to gather himself, before returning to the event and now, his father, the King, was lo
EmberPrince Kaine angles me out of view and his body tenses at his brother’s approach. I have an idea why. There have been rumors that the two half brothers don’t get along at best and are direct rivals at worst. There are even whispers that the Alpha King would prefer Prince Jasper to be his successor. If it’s true that it is the King’s desire to strip Prince Kaine of his title and right to succession, he has so far been unable to. Prince Kaine’s military achievements are too impressive to strip him of his title or succession without due cause.Prince Kaine has earned his right to inherit the throne one day. This fact is rumored to be a sore spot for both Price Jasper, and his mother, the Queen, who wants nothing more to see her own son crowned King one day.Prince Jasper’s tone shifts to something lighter, mocking as he regards his brother now. “Didn’t think you had it in you, brother. Showing a softer side now? What a revelation. So, all those omegas who claimed into your bed and
The cocky look slips from Bianca’s face as she processes what I’ve said. She shifts uncomfortably, avoiding my gaze as she replies, “That’s impossible. You must’ve seen wrong.”I know there is no way Bianca’s Mark could be real. I am Prince Kaine’s true mate, so how did she fake her mark? Catching her without it provides me the perfect opportunity to learn more.I keep calm as I regard my sister, catching her eye as I push, “Why so nervous? If it’s real, just let me see it again. That’ll clear things up.”Irritation flashes in Bianca’s eyes as she lets her defensiveness get the better of her. “I suggest that you mind your own business, or I’ll tell Father, you bullied me in the palace. You know he’d throw you out in a heartbeat.”Bianca is right, my father has always chosen her side over mine, but with my new position as Prince Kaine’s personal guard, I wouldn’t be out on the street. I narrow my eyes at Bianca, choosing to stand my ground, “I’m not interested in your business, but if
Prince Kaine stands with his back to the door, blocking me from view as Jake, his beta enters the room. “You entered without permission. That’s against protocol,” he snaps. I hear Jake pause as if confused. Jake clears his throat, and I hear the sound of footsteps retreating as he backs out of the room. After a moment I hear the door swing shut, and I become all too aware that I am still standing in Prince Kaine’s arms. My Mate Bond flares again, making me reluctant to step away, and I can’t help but breathe in his scent of leather, pine, and musk as he holds me. My head swims and I can’t bring myself to sever our connection.I fight the urge to lean in, barely stopping to wonder why he hasn’t released me until I feel his fingers brush against the bare skin of my shoulder. My clothes, barely on to begin with, must have shifted as he maneuvered me out of Jake’s line of sight. My shoulder has been bared for him to see.I snap out of it, heart beating fast as I quickly step out of his ar
