I didn’t move. Not even when Zade stood up and turned his back to me.

My eyes stayed shut, but my breathing was normal now. I didn’t even know how I pulled it off, but I kept pretending I was asleep. Because if I opened my eyes, he would know I heard every single word.

“Why did it have to be you?” he’d said.

It kept ringing over and over in my mind like I couldn’t escape it now. And I didn’t know how to feel.

My body was already betraying me. The heat was increasing, and now it felt hotter than before. It made my skin too tense, and my breath too short.

Being near him—near any of them even—was becoming painful.

But now this? Zade watching me all night, brushing my hair, and even whispering things he’d never say out loud? It was messing with my head.

When he finally left, I waited a few more minutes, then I opened my eyes cautiously. I was shaking. Not from fear this time, but from want. I was aching for him
