Nickolas held his ground long after the last motorcycle disappeared beyond the pines. A patient man stayed breathing, and he'd learned that lesson the hard way. Around these parts, rushing was just another way of digging your own grave. Even then, he counted to one hundred. Old habits kept a man alive. Only when the woods settled back into their natural rhythm did he slowly rise from the dry earth. Pine needles clung to his jacket as he brushed himself off. Every muscle in his body ached from lying motionless, but he ignored it. One thought echoed through his mind. Grace is alive. It wasn't much, but it was enough. For a day now he'd been chasing shadows, finding only dead ends and unanswered questions. Now he had something real. Black Rose was a place. He didn't know where it was or who ran it, but he intended to find out. Nickolas slipped through the trees, careful to avoid leaving an obvious trail. Every few yards he stopped to listen. The forest was quiet agai

The abandoned sawmill sat on the edge of town like a monument to forgotten days. Its weathered walls leaned with age, and the towering chimney cast a long shadow over the empty yard. It looked like nature had spent years reclaiming the place, weaving vines through broken windows and forcing weeds between warped floorboards. Nickolas killed the truck's engine nearly three hundred yards away. The old pickup gave one final groan before settling into silence. It had done its job beautifully. He remained behind the wheel for a moment, studying the mill through the dusty windshield, but nothing moved. The place was dead quiet. He climbed out and closed the door gently this time. The truck's tired hinges creaked in protest, but not loudly enough to carry. With his hat pulled low and his rifle slung across his back, he disappeared into the brush. Years of working the ranch had taught him how to move through rough terrain without announcing his presence. Dry grass brushed ag

Nickolas removed the dusty blanket that covered his old pick up truck. It hadn't been used in a while and he worried that it might not do the distance. But he hoped that it could at the very east carry him to the gas station. He walked around the truck and opened the drivers seat, only to have more dust fall on his boots as the door opened. The truck smelled musky and the interior was covered with more dust. Two things happen as he put his full weight on the worn out leather seat. Firstly, more dust jumped up and the springs from underneath him complained from lack of use. As he put the key in the ignition, the truck gave a feeble whine but did not start. After a few tries and a worn out patience, the truck came to life. He pulled out of the ranch and into the dirt road. Nickolas would have preferred riding on horseback than inside the truck in such searing heat but he preferd not to stand out as he approched the enemy. After what felt like ages but which had

Nickolas was beside himself with worry. He went to a room downstairs that was kept for the monitoring of the ranch, but with the ranch not having as much activity, they hardly ever went to the monitors but he needed answers. He played the tape back to the previous day when he last saw Grace. On the screen he could see himself when he went into her suit but there were not cameras inside the suits, that was mainly to protect the privacy of the occupants. Not long after he left her, she had gone out, only to come back running and closed the door behind. Something must have scared her. He wondered if she had seen Owen anywhere, but he remembered the log book that Lilith had shown him, new guests had arrived and it there was nothing out of the ordinary about the two couples and a mother with her daughter. He was ready to give up when at the corner of his eye, he caught movement on the tape. A bulky man appeared on the screen, he looked around the floor before he started for

It was only after six in the morning, but the little town that surrounded the ranch was already up and sinning. Nickolas stood next to the chestnut stallion, Florence, on a hill overlooking the ranch below. It had been a long night outside, and he was tired. After seeing that the guests were fed and enjoying themselves, he had taken the horse to his place of solitude. The place was on the hill above the ranch. When he needed to think, he came up here and sat against the weathered oak tree that had seen too many suns and rains. Last night, he had done the same thing. There was nothing like sleeping under the canopy of the stars to think; after what happened with the stables burning down, he had a lot of thinking to do. The fire in itself hadn’t made him suspicious; it was only later, when he was walking around the barn, that he noticed the hose that was supposed to be used in an emergency had been cut off. When he enquired from one of his men, Jason. The young man said that the h

Grace raced past Nickolas and bolted straight in the ranch's direction. “Shit.” Nicholas sighed. He knew he had just blown his one and only chance to impress her. He debated between chasing after her and letting her cool off. Before he could decide, Jason appeared, panicked and breathless. “Sir…” he shouted as he came closer to Nickolas. And Nickolas was struck by the look on the young man’s face. “What is it?” he asked and decided against loading him with questions. Jason was not quick with his mind. When he had something important to say, if you were interested, it was always best to give him time to gather his wits about and let him tell you at his own pace. Once he had reached his boss, he crunched next to him, to catch his breath. “A fire-“ he wheezed. “Where?” Nickolas couldn’t wait for him to finish the sentence but looked up, and accurate enough, there was smoke rising to the sky. Panic seeped through him, and he broke into a run, letting the smoke le

“But you don’t have your ring on?” “Oh, Ohm.” Emily said, regarding her hand. It was an odd thing to notice, but she was not used to the ring; it was too flashy for her simple taste. “I noticed you had on a stunning rock last night.” Mark tried to make the situation light. He shook his head to c

The Caelum ranch stood on a hill, its white-washed walls glowing like a beacon in the fading light; the ranch house’s structure seemed out of place, as if someone had plucked it from the Mediterranean coast and deposited it amidst the rolling hills and dotting pastures of California. From the bott

Nickolas Meyer was drowning. He was surrounded by a sea of water. The pain in his side was becoming unbearable every time he pulled himself to stay above water. He was sinking further and further down; he could make out the dimming lights of the yatch as it took on a different course, sailing aw

Owen was already seated at the table, sipping on his black coffee. Emily smiled when she approached him. There were lines between his eyes that she had not noticed there earlier. He got up and pulled out a chair for her to sit. Still feeling a little flustered from her two seconds with Mark in t
