Nyx shook her head, denial rising like bile in her throat. "I don't want to become anything. I don't want power or authority or anything except to live without being hunted."

"Unfortunately, what you want doesn't matter." Rhael's voice was gentle, almost kind. "The Goddess has decreed your destruction. The Hunters are coming. And nothing you do will stop them."

Nyx was silent for a long moment, her mind racing through possibilities. She could run—disappear into the wilderness, lose herself in the vast forests and mountains that stretched beyond the pack's territory. The Hunters might follow, but at least they wouldn't find the pack. At least Caelan would be safe.

"I wouldn't bother," Rhael said, as if reading her thoughts. "The Hunters are tracking you through the blood tether. They can feel your connection to the Alpha, to the pack bond, to everything that makes you what you are. Running would just lead them to wherever you end up."

Nyx felt the despair rising, sharp and suffocating. "Then what do I do? How do I stop them?"

"The question isn't how to stop the Hunters," Rhael said, his voice dropping to a whisper. "The question is: who set this in motion? Who's been planning this for decades?"

"What do you mean?"

Rhael was silent for a moment, his eyes distant. "Elder Maren didn't choose you randomly," he said finally. "She didn't pick a random Skinwalker from the shadows and deliver her to the Obsidian Throne. She'd been in contact with someone inside this fortress for over a decade, tracking a subject matching your description. You were delivered here on purpose."

Nyx felt the world tilt beneath her feet. Elder Maren, the mysterious figure who had orchestrated her marriage to Caelan, who had arranged the blood tether and placed her in this pack—she'd been planning this for years. Nyx wasn't a random choice. She was a deliberate selection, a carefully chosen piece in a game she didn't understand.

"Who?" she demanded, her voice sharp. "Who was she in contact with?"

Rhael shook his head. "I don't know. The trail goes cold at the fortress walls. Whoever it is, they're good at hiding their tracks. But I know that Maren was receiving regular communications from someone inside the Obsidian Throne. Someone who knew about you, knew where you'd be, knew exactly when to make the move."

Nyx's mind raced through the possibilities. Kira was too young, too removed from the politics of the pack. Corvus was too focused on his books. The senior warriors were too loyal to Caelan to work against him. But there were others—advisors, servants, wolves who moved through the shadows without drawing attention.

"The question is," Rhael said, his voice echoing in the darkness, "who put you there, and what do they expect to happen next?"

---

The Shadow Broker left as silently as he'd arrived, melting into the darkness of the drainage tunnel without a backward glance. Nyx stood alone in the corridor, the map still clutched in her trembling hands, the weight of his words pressing down on her like a physical force.

Seven Hunters converging on her location. A mysterious figure inside the fortress who had orchestrated her arrival. A Goddess who had decreed her destruction. And she was alone, trapped in a fortress of wolves who didn't know what she was, carrying a secret that could destroy everything she'd come to love.

Nyx made her way back through the fortress, her footsteps silent on the cold stone. The corridors were empty, the wolves of the Obsidian Throne asleep in their dens. She moved through the darkness like a ghost, a creature of shadow and secrets, carrying the weight of truths that could shatter the world.

In Caelan's chambers, she found him awake, sitting on the edge of the bed with his head in his hands. The tether hummed with his concern, his fear, his desperate need to protect her.

"Where did you go?" he asked, his voice rough with worry. "I felt you leave, felt you disappear into the lower levels. I couldn't find you through the bond."

"I needed air," Nyx said, the lie automatic, instinctive. "I couldn't sleep."

Through the tether, she felt him hear the lie, felt the sharp edge of his disappointment. But he didn't call her out, didn't demand the truth she couldn't give him.

"Come here," he said, reaching for her. "We'll face it together."

Nyx crossed to him, her body aching with exhaustion and fear. She sat beside him on the bed, his arms wrapping around her, pulling her close.

"You're shaking," he observed. "You're terrified."

"I am," she admitted, and the truth felt like a relief. "I'm terrified of what's coming. Of what I'll lose. Of what I'll have to become to survive."

Caelan pressed a kiss to her forehead, his lips warm against her cold skin. "We'll figure it out," he said. "We always do."

---

But as Nyx lay in his arms, staring at the ceiling, she knew that "we" was a luxury she couldn't afford. The Hunters were coming for her, and she would do whatever it took to protect the wolves who had accepted her as their Luna. Even if it meant sacrificing herself.

And when the truth about her past, her origins, and her true nature finally came to light, she would face it head-on. Because the truth would set her free. Eventually.

The problem was what it would destroy in the meantime.

---

The night deepened around them, the fortress settling into silence. Through the tether, Nyx felt the pack dreaming—their fears and hopes and fears mingling with her own. She was part of them now, bound to them in ways that couldn't be undone.

And she would do whatever it took to protect them.

The truth would come out eventually. The Hunters would come eventually. The war that had been brewing for centuries would eventually erupt.

But for tonight, she was safe. For tonight, she was loved. For tonight, the darkness could wait.

Tomorrow, the battle would begin.

Nyx couldn't sleep. The drawing of the Skinwalker from Corvus's research haunted her—a crude sketch rendered in brown ink that had faded to sepia over centuries. The figure was hunched, its limbs too long, its face a featureless void with hollow eyes that seemed to follow her even when she turned away. Abomination had been scratched beneath it in a spidery hand, the word carved into the parchment with enough pressure to leave grooves. Someone had watched the genocide of her kind and chosen that word. Someone had documented their destruction with clinical precision and called them abominations. She paced the dark corridors of the fortress, her bare feet silent on the cold stone. The pack was asleep, their dreams filtering through the bond like distant music. Caelan slept in their chambers, his presence warm and steady through the tether, a lifeline in the darkness. But sleep wouldn't come

That evening, the fortress held a vigil for the wounded warriors. The pack gathered in the great hall, their voices rising in the ancient songs of protection and healing. Nyx stood at Caelan's side, feeling the weight of three hundred eyes on her, their suspicion and curiosity mingling with their hope. She was their Luna. She was supposed to protect them, to guide them, to be the symbol of their unity. But she was also the reason the Hunter had come, the reason they were all in danger. The irony was bitter, sharp as a blade.Kira found her during the vigil, her expression carefully neutral. "We need to talk," sh

The war council convened in the great hall of the fortress, the ancient stones absorbing the tension that crackled through the air like static before a storm. Caelan sat at the head of the table, his presence commanding, his eyes shadowed with exhaustion and suspicion. Kira stood at his right, her arms crossed, her expression unreadable. Around them, the pack's senior warriors and advisors had gathered, their faces a mixture of fear and determination.Nyx entered last, her footsteps silent on the worn stone floor. She'd spent the night on the eastern watchtower, watching the moon sink toward the horizon, planning her departure. But Caelan had found her before she could slip away, his grip on her arm firm and unyielding. You were going to leave, he'd said, and through the tether she'd felt his hurt, his betrayal, his fierce determination to keep her safe.I was going to protect you, she'd repli

Later that night, Caelan found her on the balcony of his chambers, staring out at the dark forest beyond the fortress walls."Tell me the truth," he said, his voice soft but insistent. "All of it. I can't protect you if I don't understand what we're facing."Nyx turned to face him, her expression carefully neutral. "The Hunter is a divine agent sent by the Moon Goddess. It's here to find and destroy threats to Her order. It's been sent specifically to find and eliminate me. The protocol you found is the instruction manual for the weapons She uses to enforce Her will."She didn't mention that she'd known about the Hunters all along, that her people had been fleeing them for generations. She didn't tell him that the protocol had been designed specifically to hunt and destroy her kind, and that the G

The patrol returned at dusk, their formation ragged, their faces grim with exhaustion and something else—something that made Nyx's stomach clench with foreboding before she'd even heard the report.Caelan led the group, his expression carved from stone, his body language radiating controlled fury. Behind him came Ronan, the young warrior's face pale beneath its usual tan, his left arm wrapped in a blood-soaked bandage. And behind Ronan, four more warriors—two being supported by their comrades, one being carried on a makeshift stretcher, the fourth walking with a limp that suggested broken bones.Nyx met them at the fortress gates, her heart pounding, her senses already reaching through the tether to feel what Caelan had experienced. Through their connection, she caught fragments—terror, confusion, a wrongness that defied description."What happened?" she demanded, falling int
