HALF-TRUTHS

The war council convened in the great hall of the fortress, the ancient stones absorbing the tension that crackled through the air like static before a storm. Caelan sat at the head of the table, his presence commanding, his eyes shadowed with exhaustion and suspicion. Kira stood at his right, her arms crossed, her expression unreadable. Around them, the pack's senior warriors and advisors had gathered, their faces a mixture of fear and determination.

Nyx entered last, her footsteps silent on the worn stone floor. She'd spent the night on the eastern watchtower, watching the moon sink toward the horizon, planning her departure. But Caelan had found her before she could slip away, his grip on her arm firm and unyielding.

You were going to leave, he'd said, and through the tether she'd felt his hurt, his betrayal, his fierce determination to keep her safe.

I was going to protect you, she'd replied.

That's not your choice to make.

Now she stood before the assembled pack, feeling their eyes on her, their suspicion and curiosity mingling in the bond she shared with Caelan. She'd made a choice in the hours since dawn: enough truth to prepare them, wrapped in enough fiction to protect herself.

"A Hunter," she told Caelan and Kira, her voice steady despite the fear coiling in her chest. "Divine agent. Not a wolf. Ancient." She paused, letting the words sink in. "Someone in the territory is being hunted, and these things don't stop until recalled or destroyed."

"Who?" Caelan asked, his eyes fixed on hers. Through the tether, she felt his demand for the truth, his need to understand what they were facing.

Nyx deflected with perfect precision. She was a Skinwalker—perfect at being nothing, perfect at misdirection. "Orin's notes were fragmentary," she said, the lie sliding smoothly from her lips. "But whoever is being targeted..." She met Caelan's eyes, letting him see the fear she couldn't hide. "They're in terrible danger."

Caelan studied her for a long moment, his silver-gold eyes boring into hers. Through the tether, she felt him weighing her words, searching for the truth beneath the fiction. She let him feel her fear—that was real, that was genuine—and let it obscure the deception.

"Orin's notes," Kira said, her voice flat with skepticism. "The old scholar who died before any of us were born. His notes are somehow relevant to a divine agent attacking our border?"

"Orin was the last pack scholar to study the ancient texts," Nyx said, the lie building on itself. "His notes were preserved in the archives. They describe creatures like the one we're facing. Divine agents sent to enforce the will of the Moon Goddess."

"And you just happened to find these notes?" Kira's voice was sharp, cutting. "In the archives that no one has accessed in decades?"

Nyx met her gaze steadily. "I've been researching the pack's history. The archives are extensive, and Corvus has been helpful in locating relevant materials. I found Orin's notes two days ago, before the attack."

Kira's expression didn't shift, but Nyx felt her suspicion through the pack bond—a thread of distrust that had been growing since the confrontation on the balcony. She needed to manage Kira carefully, to give her just enough truth to keep her from digging deeper.

"The Hunter came from the Goddess," Nyx continued, turning back to Caelan. "It was sent to find someone. Someone who has drawn the Goddess's attention. And it won't stop until it's fulfilled its mission or been destroyed."

"How do we destroy it?" Caelan asked.

"I don't know." This was true, at least. The protocol hadn't detailed methods for killing divine agents—only for identifying and containing them. "Orin's notes were incomplete. But I know that Hunters are vulnerable to disruption. They need focus, purpose. If we can distract them, confuse them, we might be able to slow them down."

Through the tether, Caelan felt her fear and made his choice. He mobilized the fortress. Defensive positions. Doubled patrols. Confined Nyx to the fortress with an Alpha command that allowed no argument.

"You're not leaving," he said, his voice brooking no disagreement. "You're staying here, where I can protect you."

"You can't protect me from a Hunter," Nyx said, her voice sharp. "No one can."

"Then we'll find a way." Caelan turned to the assembled warriors, his voice carrying across the great hall. "The fortress is on lockdown until further notice. All patrols are doubled, all borders are reinforced. No one enters or leaves without my explicit authorization."

The warriors dispersed, their expressions grim, their movements purposeful. Kira lingered, her eyes still fixed on Nyx with that unsettling intensity.

"I'll be watching you," she said quietly, so only Nyx could hear. "Whatever you're hiding, I'll find it."

---

The hours that followed were a blur of activity. The fortress transformed from a place of relative peace to a war camp, its walls manned with archers, its gates reinforced with iron and magic. Wolves moved through the corridors with purpose, their senses sharp, their weapons ready.

Nyx watched it all from the window of Caelan's chambers, feeling the pack's fear through the bond. They didn't understand the threat they faced. They didn't know that the creature stalking their borders was an agent of the goddess they worshipped, sent to destroy the woman who had become their Luna.

And she couldn't tell them. The truth would destroy everything—her relationship with Caelan, her position in the pack, her fragile hope of survival. The lies she'd told were necessary, vital, the only thing standing between her and the annihilation she'd been running from her entire life.

But the lies were also isolating her, pushing her further into the darkness she'd been trying to escape.

"You're brooding," Caelan observed, appearing at her side. His hand found hers, warm and reassuring. "I can feel it through the tether."

"I'm planning," Nyx corrected. "There's a difference."

"Not really." He studied her profile, his gaze softening. "You're worried about the Hunter."

"I'm worried about everything." She turned to face him, her expression unguarded. "The Hunter is a threat I understand. It's the other threats that scare me—the ones I can't see, can't predict, can't control."

Through the tether, she felt his response—understanding, concern, and something else she couldn't quite name. He was still holding back, still guarding part of himself even as he reached for her.

"What aren't you telling me?" he asked quietly. "I can feel it, Nyx. There's something you're holding back."

Nyx met his gaze, her mind racing. She could tell him the truth—all of it. The protocol, the genocide, the Goddess's complicity. She could lay everything bare and let him make his own choice.

But she couldn't. The truth would destroy him, would shatter his faith in everything he'd been raised to believe. She couldn't do that to him. Not now, not when they were already facing so much.

"I'm holding back because I have to," she said carefully. "Some truths are too dangerous to speak aloud. Some secrets need to stay buried."

"That's not an answer."

"It's the only answer I have."

Caelan was quiet for a long moment, his eyes searching her face. Then he nodded, slowly, his hand tightening on hers.

"Okay," he said. "Okay. I'll trust you. But I need you to trust me too. When you're ready to tell me everything, I'll be here."

Nyx felt something crack inside her—a wall she'd built so carefully, so deliberately. The warmth in his voice, the acceptance in his eyes, made her want to believe that she could have this. That she could be loved despite everything she was.

"I'll tell you," she promised, and the words tasted like hope. "When it's safe. When the Hunter is dealt with. When we can breathe again."

"I'll hold you to that," Caelan said.

Nyx shook her head, denial rising like bile in her throat. "I don't want to become anything. I don't want power or authority or anything except to live without being hunted.""Unfortunately, what you want doesn't matter." Rhael's voice was gentle, almost kind. "The Goddess has decreed your destruction. The Hunters are coming. And nothing you do will stop them."Nyx was silent for a long moment, her mind racing through possibilities. She could run—disappear into the wilderness, lose herself in the vast forests and mountains that stretched beyond the pack's territory. The Hunters might follow, but at least they wouldn't find the pack. At least Caelan would be safe."I wouldn't bother," Rhael said, as if reading her thoughts. "The Hunters are tracking you through the blood tether. They can feel your connection to the Alpha, to the pack

Nyx couldn't sleep. The drawing of the Skinwalker from Corvus's research haunted her—a crude sketch rendered in brown ink that had faded to sepia over centuries. The figure was hunched, its limbs too long, its face a featureless void with hollow eyes that seemed to follow her even when she turned away. Abomination had been scratched beneath it in a spidery hand, the word carved into the parchment with enough pressure to leave grooves. Someone had watched the genocide of her kind and chosen that word. Someone had documented their destruction with clinical precision and called them abominations. She paced the dark corridors of the fortress, her bare feet silent on the cold stone. The pack was asleep, their dreams filtering through the bond like distant music. That evening, the fortress held a vigil for the wounded warriors. The pack gathered in the great hall, their voices rising in the ancient songs of protection and healing. Later that night, Caelan found her on the balcony of his chambers, staring out at the dark forest beyond the fortress walls."Tell me the truth," he said, his voice soft but insistent. "All of it. I can't protect you if I don't understand what we're facing."Nyx turned to face him, her expression carefully neutral. "The Hunter is a divine agent sent by the Moon Goddess. It's here to find and destroy threats to Her order. It's been sent specifically to find and eliminate me. Behind him came Ronan, the young warrior's face pale beneath its usual tan, his left arm wrapped in a blood-soaked bandage. And behind Ronan, four more warriors—two being supported by their comrades, one being carried on a makeshift stretcher, the fourth walking with a limp that suggested broken bones.Nyx met them at the fortress gates, her heart pounding, her senses already reaching through the tether to feel what Caelan had experienced. Through their connection, she caught fragments—terror, confusion, a wrongness that defied description."What happened?" she demanded, falling int
