MADDIE POV

The drive is peaceful and uneventful. However, when I get to River View’s packhouse, there is a whirlwind of activity. I see Adaley, my sister-in-law looking frazzled, and I hurry over to her.

“Ley, what is happening?”

“Oh, Mads! Thank goddess you’re here! Ike is in an uproar, demanding the little shit, Chandler, is put to death for what he’s been doing to poor Rooker. Nolan is having a hard time keeping the peace. Which, of course, makes everyone in the pack flustered because they can feel his anxiety and anger. Can you head in there to help keep him calm? I don’t like being around that much anger, it makes me nauseous.” Adaley asks me with her hand on her slightly swollen stomach. She is such a sweet Luna. She doesn’t have a single combative bone in her body. This stress isn’t good for her right now, being halfway into her most recent pregnancy.

“Yes. I’ll head to his office now.” I say as I tip-toe up to kiss her cheek then I quickly turn and hustle down the hallway to my

Poor Rooker. I wonder what he will choose to do? I hope you all like seeing some of the old security team again and learn a little about their lives. Don't worry, Marshall and George will make an appearance as well.

MADDIE POVRooker looks up at Chandler and they meet eyes. Chandler’s look panicked and pained. I think he doesn’t want to lose his fated, but he is too conflicted with what his father has been trying to beat into his head. Rooker looks back to his Alpha, “May I speak to Chandler alone?” He asks. We all nod and leave the room.Chandler’s father looks livid that he’s being asked to leave his son alone in the room, but no one gives a shit what he wants right now.My sense of hearing is better than most wolves, so I eavesdrop once the door has closed, just to make sure Rooker is okay. I would feel guilty about not giving them their privacy, but those who can and choose to abuse their mate don’t get the benefit of the doubt. Or privacy. “Are you going to be willing to accept me and our bond?” Rooker quietly asks Chandler. I can hear the pain and heartbreak in his voice.“Being mated to another male is wrong.” Chandler says in defiance, but it’s lacking any real conviction.“Says who? Your

MADDIE POV I strip quickly and pull Infinity forward. I scream out in pain. Has it really been that long since I’ve shifted to cause this much pain? Damn!! Zeus whimpers at hearing my pain and rubs my side in comfort. When the shift is over, I lay on the ground for a minute to get my bearings and energy. Panting hard, like I just ran dozens of miles. When we stand and sense the others around us, Infinity pushes me back and takes full control. She rounds on Zeus and growls out loudly in warning. Zeus growls back, as do Fang and Bolt, Thomas and Niall’s wolves. Zeus lets out a whimper again and Infinity relaxes her stance as she gets a good whiff of their scents. Infinity whimpers back at Zeus and he approaches with caution. As she sniffs him again, she begins to purr at Zeus. I want to shout out in glee when I feel her happiness. I haven’t felt her happy in so long. *I can’t believe it! She is so happy, Daddy. She’s still not speaking, but she is happy

Do you accept the responsibility of Alpha?” “I, Alexandra Lee Evans,” Alex says while daddy cuts into her left palm. “I, Charlotte Helen Evans,” Daddy cuts into her right palm. “Do hereby accept

JOSH POV It’s been a week. A whole week since Jenna gave me the news of the coaching contract. I’ve been calling everyone I know, trying to get someone to give me another chance. One more year as a quarterback. That’s all I’m asking for. But no one is biting. It has already gotten to the point that teams, coaches, and owners aren’t taking my calls. They’re not taking Jenna’s calls either. I don’t know what else to try. Jenna keeps telling me that I need to face facts that no one wants to take that risk on me again. But I’m digging in my heels. I’m going to get a contract, dammit! I don’t care what I have to do. Well… I’m not giving anyone a blowie. I better asterisk that right now. When I haven’t been thinking about my career and staying in the NFL, my brain has floated back to my mystery biker woman. It has gotten so bad, that I’m having wet dreams about her. Seriously! I wake up while cumming in my boxers. I feel like I’m living in the

MADDIE POV Daddy picks me up around 6am on Saturday morning. We are driving to the council’s headquarters that’s located just outside of Indianapolis, Indiana. It is almost a five-hour drive from us, so leaving early is a must. It is a fairly easy and pleasant drive. It gives us plenty of time to catch up on the happenings of our businesses, the packs, and all the other stuff going on in our lives. We arrive a little before lunchtime, so we stop for food at a family-style Italian restaurant that is owned by shifters. No one blinks an eye at how much we order or when we finish it all because they know what we are. After our delicious meal and we’re full, we get back in the car and drive to the council’s property. As we approach the ornate iron gates, I begin to wish I hadn’t come. It is a foreboding property that does not scream ‘welcome’. Instead it says, ‘stay away’. I can kind of understand why; the council doesn’t want humans to just randomly pop

MADDIE POV“Oh, baby girl, no. I’m not doing this to trick you.” He gets up and joins me in the other chair at the front of his desk and holds my small hands in his large ones. “I legitimately want you on the council. I think you’d bring something new and fresh to the group. Intelligent and logical thinking are your forte. Those are qualities many on the council lack.“However, I know that taking a chosen mate isn’t really what you want. I know that you’d reject coming to the council if it meant you HAD to take a chosen mate by a deadline. Council seat or not, either way, I’m going to do everything within my power to help you find your fated or someone who is worthy of you to take as a chosen.“You mean the world to me Maddie! What kind of father would I be if I didn’t fight tooth and nail to keep you with us forever? It is my job to look out for you, no matter how old you are. Not because I have to, but because I choose to, I want to. I love you with my whole heart.” Daddy pulls me in

MADDIE POVI school my expression as I turn to look at the elderly male approaching me. He stands at exactly six feet, with white hair cropped short and a thick white moustache, emerald green eyes sparkle out from under equally thick and bushy white eyebrows. He’s wearing an expensive suit that does nothing to hide his beer gut and overall smarminess. His smile is smug, like he’s happy he finally won something.“Not going to greet your gramps?” Armaros asks me as he gets up into my personal space. He smells like a combination of black licorice and cilantro, not a pleasant pairing, I assure you. I can also smell the cheap cigar and stale whiskey on his breath. I take several steps back to try and redefine my personal bubble.“You aren’t my grandfather.” I say simply as I move to go around him and to head back to Daddy’s office.“Don’t you turn away from me, runt. You will do as you’re told for once,” he sneers as he pulls me back toward him by my elbow, claws digging in, piercing my ski

JOSH POV I check my appearance in the hotel’s floor length mirror one last time. I just had a haircut in preparation for tonight’s date… hopeful date, anyway. I have it styled short on the sides and back with a little longer on top. Several of the guys on the team say it is a soft, modified version of a high and tight and I can’t disagree. I don’t like my hair long. Never have. It makes my helmet sit weird if it’s too long. That’s a distraction on the field that I don’t need. So, I’ve set a haircut schedule to every three weeks and that seems to be the perfect interval to keep it manageable. I dressed in all black for tonight. Not that I dislike colors on myself. Hell, I even own a pink button down and I know I rock the shit outa that shirt! But all black elevates the semi-casual clothing I picked. The black, long-sleeved button down is open at the top four buttons, showing off just a bit of my tanned chest. It is tight across my biceps and pecs, accentuating my

MADDIE POV We look up and see Daddy standing at the door, holding a few snacks in his hands. He is glaring at Josh, and I immediately feel his Alpha aura fill up the small hospital room. His eyes are flashing between his blue and Zeus’ silver. His claws and teeth have elongated, and I can see fur trying to sprout out of his skin. Oh shit. Yep. Daddy is pissed. “Daddy, Zeus, stand down!” I demand, hoping he will listen. “Madison…” Daddy begins to argue, his eyes never leaving Josh. I feel his aura getting stronger as he drops the food to the floor and steps menacingly toward Joshua, squishing the food as he goes. Out of my peripheral, I see Josh beginning to tremble and I know I need to put a stop to this before they hurt someone. I muster what little energy I have and force my own aura out. Hard and fast. “I SAID STAND DOWN!!” I command, while glaring at Daddy. How dare he threaten my mate!! His eyes c

JOSH POV Rose smiles gently at me in understanding. Something passes over me with her sweet grin that makes me relax in her presence. “I can understand all the conflicting thoughts and emotions, Josh. We were raised human, with human expectations for and of our lives. To suddenly be told that your life, the path that you’ve chosen and fought so hard for, has a foretold destiny with someone you never intended, is a shock to say the least. To not know if the feelings you are having are really your own or are they the mate bond? It is enough to make you want to reject the destiny set before you, on principle alone. Your life is yours, and you won’t be pushed into something you never wanted, in order to simply appease The Goddess. A deity you don’t even believe in. “Almost all werewolf parents are fated mates. Did you know that?” I shake my head no. “Werewolf pups are born and raised knowing they have a mate out there, somewhere, just waiting for them to find each

JOSH POV Tyson and I stop talking. He is lying in Rose’s bed with her, just waiting for her to wake. I look over at him and realize he is still covered in dried blood from the battle. That has to itch like crazy! But he doesn’t move away from Rose’s side to go get cleaned up. I sit in the bedside chair next to Maddie while I hold her hand. It seems so small and delicate in my large one. But I know her size is incredibly deceiving. She is a fierce tidal wave. She doesn’t let her height and petiteness dictate her life and I just admire the shit out of her for that. I am just as attracted to her strong personality as I am to her jaw-dropping beauty. Is it possible I’ve always looked for the strong female personality that I’ve always longed for in all the wrong places? Not that I knew to look in a werewolf pack, but still. Everyone I’ve ever dated seemed strong. At first. But as time wore on, I discovered they were all wearing a mask. A false bravado. A

JOSH POV “Fuck!” I exclaim while I run my hands through my hair in frustration. “All we’ve done is talk! At least, that was what we were doing until I watched her catapult herself off a balcony to go fight a rogue army! You know what? Fuck this! I need to see her. I don’t care if they’re still working on her, I need to see her. Right now!” I demand, getting frustrated again. I begin to storm over to a nurse’s desk when a short dark-headed man emerges from the back area wearing a white doctor’s coat. “Tyson,” he begins approaching Tyson where he and Rose are sitting. He takes in the sight of Rose passed out on Tyson’s lap and I can see the panic on his face. “Is Rose okay?” He hustles over and begins taking Rose’s pulse. His concern is clear in his tone. “Adam. I didn’t know you were here. She’ll be okay, just wore herself out trying to help Maddie. You know how Rose is. Can we see Mads now?” Tyson calmly addresses the doctor as he stands with Rose in

JOSH POV It is nighttime, so visibility isn’t great, but I see the large Ferrari man, Alpha Tyson, exiting the forest with an unconscious Maddie in his arms. Both of them are naked and splattered with blood. What I can see is that he is holding her neck with one hand while he is running. The blood oozing and dripping through his fingers increases my panic. I begin sprinting in his direction, needing to get to Maddie as quick as I can. I notice that the woman who was with him, Luna Rose, is running toward them too. She’s quite a distance in front of me, but I’m fast so I know I’ll catch up to her quickly. When she sees Tyson and Maddie coming out of the trees, she stops for a moment and then, in the blink of an eye, she is gone. It’s like she disappears into thin air. I look back to Maddie and see Luna Rose is right next to her. Before I can process what I just saw, she is reaching out and touching the two of them and then all three of them vanish into thin air,

JOSH POV He sets me down inside and I glare at him as he closes the door and locks it behind us. I can’t remember the last time I was manhandled off the field and certainly, never like that! He shrugs his shoulders at me, not at all intimidated by my glare. “Mr. Logan, nice to see you again.” I hear. I turn and see Bette among the people within the bunker. There are quite a few more here than I thought there would be. Maybe all the packhouse workers? Lots of kids are in here too. One little girl runs up to the man who carried me in here. “Daddy is Mommy okay?” she asks as she jumps into his arms. “Yes baby. She’s with Alpha and your uncles, fighting off the rogues.” He replies, soothing the little one by rubbing circles on her back and kissing her hair. I look at him again and realize he is most likely Devon, Beta Greta’s mate. He’s a handsome male, with short tousled dirty blonde hair, light brown eyes, and sharp jawline. He has a Roman

JOSH POV Madison’s lips are on mine. Kissing me, searing my heart with electricity. There isn’t even tongue involved, and it is by far, the very best kiss I’ve ever had in my life. I hold her to me, as tightly as I can, but she pulls away. I know she is strong. Stronger than me, but I still try to hold on. It’s no use though. She turns away from me and I call her name as she runs toward a balcony door, one I hadn’t noticed before, just at the edge of the wall of windows. But she doesn’t turn back to me when I call out to her. Instead, she strips the dress off and my GOD this woman has an amazing body! My lizard brain stops mid-thought though when she launches herself off of the balcony’s edge. I run to the railing; afraid I’ll see her crumpled in a bloody heap, only to see her land safely on the ground. Not as a person, but as a wolf. She is black, well, mostly black. Her paws and the tip of her tail are a light blonde color that look almost like they are glowin

MADDIE POV I am almost relieved when I hear the howl from my border patrol, indicating a rogue attack. I immediately feel guilty that I’m more comfortable dealing with a rogue attack than telling Josh how to reject me. I feel a pack link sever just as another howl goes up and the siren blares to life. I turn to Josh. I see his concern and the fear in his eyes. “I have to go. Rogues are attacking. Stay here. Devon will come get you and get you into the shelter.” I say quickly. I turn toward the balcony door and run. I get halfway there, when I turn around, and I run back to Josh. I slam my lips to his, wanting to feel a kiss from him, at least one kiss from my fated mate, before he rejects me. I feel his arms engulf me and hold me to him. He kisses me back. I don’t want to leave his embrace, knowing I’ll never get to have it again. I pull away, much sooner than I’d like. “I needed to kiss you, at least once.” I tell him, saying goodbye wit

JOSH POV “Wait! Are you going to force this on me? Am I even allowed to leave? Am I a prisoner? And if I wasn’t your mate, what would have happened to me when I first got here? What would you have chosen to do with me, oh mighty Alpha?!” I begin to panic again, and my words are tumbling over each other in a rush to get them out. “Josh, please calm down. Your heart rate is insanely high, and you’ll hyperventilate if you don’t regulate your breathing. I’ll answer each question that you have. “I don’t need a wolf for a mate. I’ll admit, I wasn’t expecting to have a human for a mate, but it doesn’t bother me that you are one. Am I surprised by it? Yes. But I won’t be rejecting you for a reason as frivolous as you being human. “There are no rules about humans being mated to wolves or any issues with them living with the pack. At least, not in my pack. There are several dozen humans who are mated to members of Blue Meadow right now.
