MADDIE POV

Greta and I perform yet another honor ceremony for our fallen warriors. I always wish there was more I could do to honor these men and women who give their lives to the pack. I do ensure their families are taken care of financially. I watch over and make sure their children have the means to attend college or trade school, if that is what they want. I provide pack funded therapy to help with the whole family’s grief and any emotional struggles they may have.

It still doesn’t feel like it’s enough.

I can feel Josh’s eyes on me the entire time I’m up here placing the nameplates on our wall of honor. The few times I’ve looked over at him, I can see some big emotions washing over him. I can’t even begin to imagine how he’s feeling tonight. Everything must be just so overwhelming.

I like that I can see some of those emotions in his eyes though, despite not being marked yet. His face is incredibly expressive. I like it. It gives me a

JOSH POV I can’t catch my breath. I’m having trouble with my lungs. They don’t seem to be working anymore. But that doesn’t happen, right? Lungs don’t just STOP working for no medical reason. It’s like the air is stuck in my throat; trapped in a shallow cavern within my chest. My heart is beating frantically, racing away like an out-of-control race car with no driver at the wheel. I know what this is. I know why I can’t breathe and it’s not because I’m sick with some unknown medical ailment. It’s love. I love Maddie. It’s a shock to the system, to say the least. I honestly didn’t think I had it in me to love a woman. I thought it was something I would be without for the entirety of my whole life because I hadn’t been able to give my heart to anyone before now. But that is definitely what this is. And I’m scared. Holy fuck, I’m scared! I can’t think about the fear though. I need to set that aside. Anything new in life can be a

MADDIE POV “Daddy bought them out. He was pissed they’d snuck the sale of this building out from under him. I thought it was hilarious that he missed it, because he’s usually on top of things; so much so that he catches mistakes others miss. He was planning on the exact thing you’ve done, renovating it into luxury condos. But Daddy was going to sell the condos versus rent them.” “Well, I’m happy I weaseled my way into it, then.” Josh says with a chuckle, apparently delighted with himself. “I now have a very tidy, passive income from the rentals along with my investment portfolio to live off of. I also have a few other buildings in the city that I’ve renovated and rent out as well. I don’t need my NFL paycheck. I mainly use that for the foundation and charity work.” “Then, if you don’t mind me asking…” I pause with my question, not wanting him to get upset with me. “Why do you want to continue with football, and the possible injuries that comes with t

MADDIE POV I’m not sure I can find the words to respond to Josh’s statements about his observations of me. And I’m not sure why I’m surprised by what he sees of me. But I am. I mean, he’s not wrong. I don’t give a crap about his wealth or his fame. In fact, it would be easier for me if he wasn’t famous at all. As the first Evans child, and the only one who isn’t an actual Evans by blood, I was subjected to press exposure in the human world for a little while. Everyone wanted a glimpse at the little girl lucky enough to be adopted by a billionaire. At least, that was the case until Daddy got more insistent on round-the-clock bodyguards and staying on pack land as much as possible. I only ever left for school, accompanied Daddy to Blue Meadow or one of the other packs, and to visit Patty Melt and Pops at the diner. And with Madhatter Industries, I prefer the anonymity of not being famous or in the limelight. Hell, that’s also w

JOSH POV As they say on SpongeBob SquarePants, (Yes, I’ve watched the show. It’s very popular with the foster kids of my foundation.)… ‘Three hours later…’ we’re finally on the road to Green Bay. I glance over at Maddie in my passenger seat as we pass through the pack’s front gate and I see her looking down at her clasped hands, gnawing on her lower lip. “Hey now, what’s with the face?” I ask as I reach over and caress the back of her neck. Maddie looks up at me with worry and I can see Infinity faintly blinking back at me too. “I’m sorry about them, Josh.” “That wasn’t your fault, Mads. It’s more mine than yours.” “No. They’ve been wanting to meet you and apparently I didn’t convey my ‘no’ well enough when they’ve been asking in order to properly keep them away. If I had, we wouldn’t have been interrupted… again.” “But if I wasn’t famous, they wouldn’t have been chomping at the bit to meet me.” I tell her, wanting to easy th

MADDIE POV I’ve really missed Josh this last week and a half. When Infinity and I decided to give him his space, I didn’t realize just how much I would miss him. So, in that regard, it really didn’t take much for me to convince myself to come see him today. I only wanted to have lunch with Josh and to speak with him about coming with me to Simone’s Luna ceremony. Okay fine… that was just an excuse. I simply wanted, no needed, to be in his presence again. I had no other motives. Seriously. Honestly. I had no idea that he would pull me to him with a sizzling kiss and it lead to giving him head. I mean, I’m not complaining that it has. Absolutely not! And you won’t EVER hear me complain about servicing my mate. I like knowing I can bring him to the brink and over the edge of pleasure with just my hands and mouth. But after our last conversation outside of the hospital, getting naked together, even just partially naked, was the l

JOSH POV I smile faintly at that. “Thank you.” I tell her as I reach over and grasp her hand. The bond sparks are there, and I can feel myself relaxing as they erupt into my body. Maddie smiles back and I can tell she’s relaxing too, the emotional equivalent of a massage, everything inside turning itself back to how it should be. “Anywho…” Maddie shakes off our awkward moment. “I wanted to speak with you about an event happening in the next few days. My youngest brother, Samuel, has found his Luna and they’re having her Luna ceremony this Saturday. I wanted to ask if you would go with me… as my date?” I blink for a second to absorb her words. “You want me to be your date to a Luna ceremony for your sister-in-law at another pack?” “Yes. My entire family is excited to meet you, and this’ll give you an opportunity to see how other packs are run. I have the pack tailor on standby to fit you for a formal tux if you agree; my dress is already
