What do you think Josh will do now?
FORMER ALPHA REID SINCLAIR POV “Sir,” I address my benefactor as I walk into his office without knocking. He turns toward me from the large window behind his desk and glares at me in anger and frustration. Probably for my lack of respect by entering without permission. I really couldn’t give two shits. He doesn’t like working with me, just like I don’t want to be working with him. But we both tolerate the other, simply because we can each reach our respective goals easier together, versus on our own. “The attack on the midget’s camp has concluded.” His forehead scrunches after a beat, probably due to the way I worded my statement. “Were we successful?” He asks. “That depends on your definition of ‘successful’.” I use air quotes, mainly because I know it’s a gesture that bothers him. I love getting under his skin. He quietly growls out his dissatisfaction of my mocking tone and gesture, giving me angry eyes at the same time. I can’t help
JOSH POV “Do you want to know what this is?” Maddie doesn’t wait for his answer, she keeps going while holding up the object between her thumb and index finger for him to see it. “THIS is one of my personal inventions. It looks… harmless. Right? Smooth and chilly to the touch, made of a metal alloy, shockingly, none of it actually silver.” She runs the tip down the cheek of the prisoner, mocking the false safety of this little device. One even I know isn’t harmless. “Despite its innocuous and innocent appearance, it is quite brutal. Inside this little pinky sized metal shape are sharp, needle-like projectiles. You see, I place this sweet girl under your skin, wherever I want… face, neck, abdomen, penis, anus… wherever suits my fancy. Then I use my little remote to activate it, one needle at a time. Each time it releases a needle, a little wolfsbane is released too. I let that work its magic. Burning, sizzling into your veins and organs. Do you know how painful w
JOSH POV My teammates act as a team but, they still look out for themselves. Playing as a team will further their own careers, but if they can throw you under the bus to advance even further, then they will and not think twice about it, especially if it gets them a bigger contract. But here… Blue Meadow pack members are so very different. They literally lay down their lives for one another. And I overheard Maddie and Greta speaking about death benefits and checking on the pups of sacrificed warriors who are off at college to make sure they have everything they need to succeed. No one here is alone and that is what my entire goal has been for my foundation, for no child to be alone in the battle of their lives. Almost everything about a pack aligns with my personal ethics of life, family and friendship. I realize as I ascend the packhouse front steps, I could do this. I could be the Luna to these shifters, and I think I’d enjoy it too. I'm hesitant to
JOSH POV “Yeah.” He nods in agreement. “I think that was it.” “Yes. He’s still around. I’ve met him and his mate. Bruno is his youngest kid. His oldest two are the Gamma and Beta for Maddie. Bruno is the Delta.” Rocco’s eyes widen in shock, but then he gets control of himself with a nod, but the tears lining his lower lashes stay present. “I’m really glad he wasn’t killed for helping us escape the warriors. I hope I get to meet him while I’m here.” “I’m sure you will…” I begin but get cut off as Rocco’s head sharply snaps over to the door; a quiet growl emanating from his chest. Standing there, with a completely stunned look on her face is the IT woman I met in the packhouse saferoom, Poppy. She’s carrying a computer bag over her shoulder, but she’s not looking at me. She’s staring at Rocco. “MATE!” They both say in unison. Rocco stands from his chair, but instead of going to her, he takes a step back, away from h
JOSH POV I watch Maddie as she turns from me and leaves Jenna’s hospital room. I turn my attention back to Jenna and check on her. The medical monitors show she’s breathing normally, and her heart rate is normal too. She has an IV line hooked up with what looks like a saline drip, and she has a blood bag in another line, giving her another transfusion. I’m not sure how many she’s had today. “The doctor came in while you and Alpha were checking on the little shifters. The rogue tore into her brachial artery. She would have bled out if the tourniquet hadn’t been placed on her arm, but subsequently, she’s lost quite a bit of blood. More so than she probably should have, given she’s human. She really needs that Bruno guy here to help her heal. Even if she doesn’t want the bond, his touch will speed up the healing process.” Rocco tells me. “Maybe I should give another unit of blood then, just in case.” “No. There were over a dozen human donor
MADDIE POV Now I growl out in anger. “Actually, I’m exactly like my daddy, but I’m nothing like my sperm donor, Kent Michaels. If I could erase him and his family from Blue Meadow’s history, I would. They give alphas a bad reputation. There’s a reason I changed my last name to my true dad’s, I never want to be associated with the Michaels line, if I can help it.” “I assumed you had mated into the Evans family, because I’ve known of you for years. But when I realized Josh is your mate, I was confused. You were adopted into the Evans family. You’re one of the lucky ones.” That last part he mumbles under his breath. “Rocco, I know you and your family were banished by Kent when you were a child. How did you survive and not become feral?” This is the question I’m most curious about, plus my history isn’t a secret, but it isn't what we need to focus on right now. I see Josh turn and look at me in confusion out of my peripheral and I know even more explana
