I dreamt about him again last night. There was nothing visual, but I could feel his presence. I could always tell when he was near. I just wished I knew who he was. Even as I woke, it felt like he was still laying there beside me. His body was much hotter than my own and made it feel like I was asleep against a radiator. If he had been any hotter, he would have burned me.

I had no idea how I could have such a connection with someone, but not even know anything about him. I wondered if he knew who I was. If he lurked in the shadows while I slept. I knew he was close, and it made no sense. We lived in a beautiful cabin, but it was high up in the hills of the highlands. There were no neighbours for miles around, and there were rarely any visitors to the area.

It was just how my father liked it. He believed we were more protected, hidden out there. After his vast years roaming the earth, my mother and I had no real knowledge of if it was really necessary. I knew we needed to stay hidden, but we could hide our true selves anywhere. For me, there was barely anything to even hide.

Half human, half vampire, I didn’t have the same skills they had. I wasn’t as strong, or as indestructible. I was immortal, but I still bled just like any other human. That was one reason that my father hauled us up in the highlands. I was a liability. He never said it, but we were only there because I was weaker than them.

My parents had no idea what I would even be like in the beginning. They had kept me isolated for just over a hundred years. They wouldn’t allow me to be well, normal, no matter how much I nagged. I couldn’t be a normal human and I couldn’t be a normal vampire. I was in limbo and it was exhausting. The idea of spending eternity in such a place was unthinkable. I would have rather died like a human than lived my kind of half-life.

Then, to top it off, I could sense him. As though he was begging me to break free from my shackles and join him in the big, bad world. It was making the torture even more unbearable.

I had left the house; I did so relatively often, but never far, and I had to stay under the cover of the trees. Being careful to stay away from man, woman or beast. My parents left regularly to hunt, but I didn’t need blood to survive, unlike them. Although human when I was born, my mother had long since been changed by my father. It wasn’t even like she could understand what I was going through. She had been a vampire much longer than she had been a human.

“What are you thinking about, sweetheart? You look so lost in thought.” I looked up as my mum spoke, the concern in her eyes apparent.

I didn’t even think before I blurted it out. “About how ending my existence would be preferable to this miserable life I lead.” She looked taken aback, but I didn’t know why. It wasn’t the first time I had expressed my will for it to be over and done with, and it wouldn’t be the last.

“I wish you wouldn’t say things like that.” My anger was brewing.

“I wish you wouldn’t keep me locked away like the freak I am, but there we go.” I was being too harsh with my tone. It wasn’t as though I didn’t understand the why, but it didn’t make it any easier to live with.

“You are not a freak, you are a miracle. Bridging the gap and being better than either vampire or human.” She spoke as though she believed every word she spoke, but it felt like just something mums say to their children.

“How exactly am I better? We’re only stuck up here because I am so weak compared to you.” My tone had eased, as had my anger, but I still didn’t believe her opinion of the situation.

“You’re wrong. We might be up here to keep you safe, but you are not weaker than your father and I in all ways. In some things, you are so much stronger. You might not have as much strength, but you don’t have our weaknesses either. To not be ruled by blood lust is alone an invaluable asset. I just wish you would see how special you really are.” She looked at me wistfully. I knew the main complaint she had as a vampire was the bloodlust. It was something she lived with, but hated every second of it.

“All mothers say that. It doesn’t make it true.” I stalked off up to my bedroom. Almost as soon as I stepped foot in my room, I felt him. It was as though he knew I was in pain. As though he was drawn to it. I stepped out onto the balcony and felt the whoosh of icy cold air slap me square in the face. At that moment, I would have killed for the kind of internal heat he had.

I wasn’t even as warm as a human, or so my mother told me. Something inside of me told me that he wasn’t human, not with the heat he radiated, and I was sure he was projecting himself into my dreams. Whenever he was around, it was like a warm glow spread over me. I searched the trees looking for any sign of life, but there was nothing there.

I stumbled backwards. The twinge of pain in my temple throbbed, and then I heard it. “Be patient. You will feel the freedom you desire sooner than you think.” Each word was accompanied by the throbbing of blood in my brain. The husky, dark voice was barely a whisper in my mind, but it was there.

“Who are you?” Just like that, the warm glow had left me again, and I ached for it to return, for him to return. I might have had no idea who he was, but I knew he would change everything. Somehow, I knew he would be the key to my freedom.

  • The Whispers in the Woods   Chapter 84

EsmeAs soon as I woke up, I knew it was going to be a bad day. I detangled myself from Jackson’s arms and tried to pull myself up from the bed. As I sat up, I realised how much my back was still hurting despite the night’s rest. If you could call it that. It was nearly impossible to get comfortable anymore. I ended up using Jackson as a pregnancy pillow pretty much every night. My back wasn’t the only problem. As I tried to stand, pain shot down my legs and forced me back onto the bed. The weight of the baby suddenly seemed so much more than it had the day before. Like he or she was crushing my pelvis.I took a deep breath and limped to the bathroom. I could have woken Jackson, but for one, he was barely sleeping because I was barely sleeping and, secondly; I refused to get to the point that I couldn’t get to the toilet alone. With every step, it felt like my leg bone was grinding against my hip and the pain was almost too much. It would have been too much if

Chapter 83 Brodie Four Weeks After Esme’s Disappearance I could hear Tyler shouting his mouth off, and I knew I needed to go and deal with it. After four weeks of searching for her, I had no energy left for dealing with their bullshit. I already knew what the problem was. Marcus was kicking off about the living arrangements yet again. Shortly after the meeting with everyone, John went to speak to Marcus, and I went along. I wanted to know what was said between the pair. Just like Esme, I no longer knew who I could trust. If my own brother could betray me, what hope did I have for anyone else? I had told Gerald I would only be gone for a couple of weeks and I had already been gone double that. Tyler had tried to suggest we should call it quits in a roundabout way. He didn’t quite dare to say it

  • The Whispers in the Woods   Chapter 82

EsmeIt had been eight weeks since we left the camp. Life had settled into a calmness, which was just what I needed. My stomach had grown to ridiculous proportions. Jackson said it was normal for werewolf pregnancies and that I needed to be aware the baby would come much faster than I would expect. It was a good job, really. If it went on much longer, I would have popped. The downside was that it gave so little time to get used to the idea. I felt so unprepared. The whole time we had been at the farmhouse, I had stayed hidden. Jackson came and went regularly, mainly to avoid drawing attention to us. When people asked about me, he told them that I was expecting and that it had been a difficult pregnancy. It was enough to evade suspicion. I was still drinking the awful witch’s brew each morning. I didn’t really know how long it would be necessary or if Brodie was even looking for me. Frankly, I avoided thinking about him as much as I could, burying

Brodie The Day of Esme’s Disappearance Nightfall had been hours before, and there was no sign of trouble anywhere. I headed back to the camp to check on Esme and told everyone to get some rest. The only exception was the guard duty, which I doubled. I wasn’t taking any chances, not with Esme being so weak. She had been through too much and I would have been dead if it wasn’t for her. I had come round as she healed me. It nearly cost her life to save mine. As soon as I could get up, I checked her over, but there were no signs of life. I felt like every drop of blood drained out of me at that moment. Regardless of having little hope, I carried her back to camp. Jackson checked her over and agreed there was nothing we could do. I was sure her dad would have

  • The Whispers in the Woods   Chapter 80

After we escaped from the passageways, we headed east and hoped we wouldn’t be seen. Jackson might not have known for long, but apparently it was long enough to form a plan. I just followed his lead. There wasn’t much else I could do because I had never thought further than escaping out of the darkness of the woods. Neither of us could use speed. It was too risky. Out in the open, anyone could have seen us. It turned out that Jackson had known about my plans longer than I had realised. As soon as he had worked it out, he decided that he would follow me. That I needed him more than anyone else, and he was so right about that.In the days that followed, I realised I would never have been able to do it without him. I had suggested we go back for my car on the off chance it was still at the university, but Jackson insisted on the train. He didn’t even have a destination in mind, per se. We boarded the first outbound train. “Where are we actually going? On second thoughts, don’t t

  • The Whispers in the Woods   Chapter 79

I started dragging him towards the camp, but I was already starting to feel the vampire effect wear off. As soon as I got far enough into the woods, I dumped him in the undergrowth. It didn’t take me long to hunt and quench the thirst that was overtaking me. With each kill, I felt less guilty about the need for it. I wiped my mouth as I headed back to where I had left him. He was still there but had managed to break through his rope ties at his ankles. “You’re not going anywhere, so could you at least stop making things harder for me?”“And why would I do that?”“We’re family. Not to mention that it is completely pointless and a waste of your energy and mine.” I stooped and tied him up again quickly. “I’m still hoping you are going to see the error of your ways.” Grabbing the scruff of his neck, I started dragging him again.“You do realise that when I don’t return to the Elders, they will send people looking for me?” It was something I had considered, but if I
