He looked away, and that small movement told me he was still hiding something.
“Not long enough to understand the whole truth,” he replied.
I stepped away from him, struggling to control my emotions. My mother had disappeared, Victoria had been hiding secrets about a child, and now I was being told that the woman who had tried to destroy my marriage might be my sister.
“How could my mother have another daughter and never tell me?”
“Your father wanted to keep her existence hidden.”
“Why?”
Adrian hesitated before answering. “According to the documents I found, your mother gave birth to twins. One child remained with her, while the other was taken away shortly after birth.”
My knees weakened.
“Twins?”
He nodded. “Victoria’s original birth records were altered. Someone arranged for her to grow up under a different identity.”
I covered my mouth, trying to process the information. I remembered my mother telling me that I had been her only child, that she and my father had never experienced the joy of raising another baby.
Had every memory of my childhood been built on a lie?
“Why would my father allow that to happen?”
“I don’t know, Elena. But I intend to find out.”
I looked at him bitterly. “You have spent three years investigating my family, Adrian. Don’t tell me you know nothing.”
Before he could respond, my phone rang.
It was my mother.
I answered immediately.
“Mom! Where are you? Are you safe?”
“Elena, listen carefully,” she whispered. Her voice sounded weak, and I could hear what seemed like a car engine in the background. “You mustn’t trust Adrian’s family.”
I looked at my husband.
“What is happening? Who has taken you?”
“Your father left something behind. Something that could expose everyone involved in what happened twenty-six years ago.”
“Mom, what did Dad leave?”
She began crying.
“Your sister was never supposed to find you. They were supposed to believe she was dead.”
My stomach tightened.
“Who are you talking about?”
Before she could answer, a man’s voice sounded in the background.
“End the call!”
“Mom!”
The line went dead.
I tried calling again, but the phone was switched off.
Adrian immediately contacted his investigator and instructed him to trace the number. While he spoke, I noticed something on the dining table that had not been there earlier.
A small brown envelope.
My name was written across it in my father’s handwriting.
I picked it up with trembling fingers and opened it. Inside was an old photograph showing my father holding two newborn babies. My mother stood beside him, looking exhausted but happy.
I turned the photograph over.
To my beloved daughters. Whatever happens, never allow anyone to separate you again.
Tears blurred my vision.
Beneath the photograph was a folded document bearing my father’s signature. I opened it and began reading.
It was a copy of an agreement between my father and the Blackwell family, dated several weeks before his death.
My eyes stopped at one paragraph.
The document stated that a substantial amount of money had been paid to arrange the permanent separation of the twins.
I looked up at Adrian.
“Your family paid my father to give away his daughter?”
His face tightened.
“I have never seen that document before.”
“Your family name is written all over it!”
He took the paper from my hand, examining the signatures.
Then his phone rang.
His investigator had found something.
“Sir,” the man said urgently, “we traced the vehicle carrying Mrs. Hayes. There’s been an accident.”
Adrian went pale.
“Is she alive?”
A painful silence followed.
“She’s alive, sir, but she’s been taken to the hospital. And there’s something else you need to know.”
Adrian looked at me.
“The woman who was driving the car has been identified.”
“Who?” I whispered.
He closed his eyes briefly before answering.
“Victoria Sinclair.”
I gripped the edge of the table.
My sister had been with my mother when the accident happened.
But the investigator’s next words made everything worse.
“Sir, Victoria has asked to speak to Elena. She says she knows who really arranged the separation of the twins.”
I reached for the phone.
For the first time, I wanted to hear what Victoria had to say.
Because if she knew who had destroyed our family, she might also know why my husband had been sent into my life in the first place.
And I was beginning to fear that Adrian was not the only person who had married me for a reason.
“That DNA report is impossible.”I pushed the document away, but the words remained in my mind, refusing to disappear. My father had been dead for years before Daniel was supposedly born, yet the report claimed he was the child’s biological father.Victoria watched me carefully.“Your father wasn’t the man you believed him to be, Elena.”“Don’t you dare speak about him as if you knew him better than I did.”“I knew enough to understand why he was killed.”Adrian stepped between us. “Explain the report.”Victoria folded her arms.“Daniel was conceived before your father died. Your mother was already pregnant when he was killed, but she concealed it because she knew the Blackwells would take the baby.”I stared at her.“Then why did my mother tell me the baby was born eleven months ago?”“Because the hospital record was altered. The birth date was changed to hide the child’s real age and identity.”My thoughts raced as I tried to understand what she was saying. If Daniel was conceived b
“Your grandfather promised my baby to another woman?” I asked, unable to hide the anger in my voice. The investigator nodded, holding the lawyer’s message on his phone. Adrian stood beside me, his expression hardening as he read it again.“Who is this woman?” Adrian demanded.“The lawyer refused to give me her name over the phone,” the investigator replied. “He insists that both of you must come to the estate before he reveals anything.”I looked at Adrian.“Your family has turned my child into an agreement, a secret, and now a bargaining tool. I want this settled tonight.”Adrian reached for my hand, but I stepped away.“We’ll go to the estate,” he said. “But I need you to understand that whoever is behind this may be dangerous.”“I understood that when someone tried to shoot my mother.”He fell silent. The Blackwell estate was unusually quiet when we arrived. Two security guards stood at the entrance, and the lights inside the main building were on despite the late hour.An elderly
The gunshot shattered the silence, and my mother collapsed before I could pull her out of the way.“Mom!”I dropped beside her, pressing my hands against her shoulder as Adrian lunged at the armed man. The photograph of my little boy slipped from my fingers, landing near the entrance as the second attacker moved toward it.“Get away from her!” Adrian shouted. He struck the gunman’s arm, sending the weapon sliding across the floor. The two men struggled, knocking over an old metal cabinet, while I desperately tried to stop my mother’s bleeding.“Stay with me, Mom. Please.”She gripped my wrist, her face twisted in pain.“Listen to me, Elena. You must find Daniel.”“I will. Just hold on.”“Don’t trust Margaret. She wasn’t the only person who arranged everything.”My mother coughed, struggling to speak.“Your father left something inside the old family house. It will explain why they took your son.”Before I could ask where it was, Adrian appeared beside us.“His investigator is outside.
“Elena, open this door before I break it!”Adrian’s voice thundered from the other side, but I couldn’t bring myself to move. My eyes remained fixed on the message claiming I had a son somewhere in the city, a child I had never known existed. My hands trembled as I typed a reply.Who are you? Where is my son?The message was delivered immediately, but no response came.“Elena!” Adrian knocked again. “I know something is wrong. Please open the door.”I slipped my phone into my pocket and unlocked it.He entered, his eyes immediately searching my face.“What happened?”“Did you know my mother had another child?”His expression changed.“Why are you asking me that?”“Answer me, Adrian.”He closed the door behind him. “I heard your mother’s name mentioned in the hospital investigation, but I didn’t know she had another child.”“Someone just told me I have a son.”He stared at me.“What?”I showed him the messages, watching his expression grow darker with every line. When he reached the fi
For several seconds, I couldn’t move.Adrian stood beside me, staring at the DNA report as if the words might change if he read them again. Margaret, meanwhile, looked like a woman who had spent years preparing for this moment and still wasn’t ready to face it.“What do you mean the child’s mother belongs to my family?” I demanded.Margaret swallowed. “The report identifies the child as Adrian’s, but the birth records were altered. The woman listed as the mother isn’t Victoria.”“Then who is she?”She looked at me.“Your mother.”My handbag slipped from my shoulder and landed on the floor.“No,” I whispered. “My mother is not the woman who had Adrian’s child.”“Listen to me, Elena,” Adrian said, moving closer.I stepped away from him.“Don’t touch me. I need an explanation.”Margaret opened the envelope again and removed another document. It was a hospital discharge record, dated eleven months earlier. My mother’s name appeared at the top, but the signature at the bottom was unfamilia
My mother’s warning made no sense, but the fear in the nurse’s eyes told me it wasn’t something I could ignore.I read the message again, hoping I had misunderstood it.Never let Adrian find out that the baby you’re carrying is a Blackwell heir.Adrian was my husband’s name. He was the only man I had ever been with, and there was no question about who had fathered my child.Unless my mother knew something I didn’t.“Did she leave an address?” I asked the nurse. The woman shook her head. “She only left that envelope. She seemed frightened, and she kept asking whether anyone had come looking for her.”I looked at the photograph again. My father stood beside Margaret Blackwell, both of them looking serious. The date written on the back was from twenty-six years ago, shortly before my birth. Why had my father connected Victoria’s child to Margaret?I pulled out my phone and called my mother. It rang several times before going to voicemail.I tried again.Nothing.“Elena?”I turned and fou
